Melt viscosity is a key indicator of product quality in polymer extrusion processes. However, real time monitoring and control of viscosity is difficult to achieve. In this article, a novel “soft sensor” approach based on dynamic gray-box modeling is proposed. The soft sensor involves a nonlinear finite impulse response model with adaptable linear parameters for real-time prediction of the melt viscosity based on the process inputs; the model output is then used as an input of a model with a simple-fixed structure to predict the barrel pressure which can be measured online. Finally, the predicted pressure is compared to the measured value and the corresponding error is used as a feedback signal to correct the viscosity estimate. This novel feedback structure enables the online adaptability of the viscosity model in response to modeling errors and disturbances, hence producing a reliable viscosity estimate. The experimental results on different material/die/extruder confirm the effectiveness of the proposed “soft sensor” method based on dynamic gray-box modeling for real-time monitoring and control of polymer extrusion processes. The mean velocity and turbulence intensity are the two main inputs to investigate the ship propeller induced seabed scouring resulting from a vessel is manoeuvring within a port where the underkeel clearances are low. More accurate data including the turbulence intensity is now available by using the laser doppler anemometry (LDA) measurement system and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach. Turbulence intensity has a loose definition, which is the velocity fluctuation as the root mean square (RMS) referenced to a mean flow velocity. However, the velocity fluctuation and mean velocity can be the overall value includingxy and z directions or the value of a single component. LDA and CFD results were obtained from two different acquisition systems (Dantec LDA system and Fluent CFD package) and therefore the outputs cannot be compared directly. An effective method is proposed for comparing the turbulence intensity between the experimental measurements and the computational predictions within a ship propeller jet. The flow patterns of turbulence intensity within a ship propeller jet are presented by using the LDA measurements and CFD results from turbulence models of standard k-e, RNG k-e, realizable ke, standard k?, SST k?and Reynolds stresses.

We propose a complete application capable of tracking multiple objects in an environment monitored by multiple cameras. The system has been specially developed to be applied to sport games, and it has been evaluated in a real association-football stadium. Each target is tracked using a local importance-sampling particle filter in each camera, but the final estimation is made by combining information from the other cameras using a modified unscented Kalman filter algorithm. Multicamera integration enables us to compensate for bad measurements or occlusions in some cameras thanks to the other views it offers. The final algorithm results in a more accurate system with a lower failure rate. (C) 2009 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. [DOI: 10.1117/1.3114605]

Densities and viscosities were measured as a function of temperature for six ionic liquids (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate and butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. The density and the viscosity were obtained using a vibrating tube densimeter from Anton Paar and a rheometer from Rheometrics Scientific at temperatures up to 393 K and 388 K with an accuracy of 10-3 g cm-3 and 1%, respectively. The effect of the presence of water on the measured values was also examined by studying both dried and water-saturated samples. A qualitative analysis of the evolution of density and viscosity with cation and anion chemical structures was performed. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2006.

The characterisation of soils for civil engineering purposes depends on removing sufficiently high-quality samples from the ground. Accurate evaluation of sample quality is therefore important if reliable design parameters are to be determined. This paper describes the use of unconfined shear wave velocity (V s) and suction (u r) measurements to assess sample quality rapidly in soft clay. Samples of varying quality from three well-characterised soft clay sites are initially assessed using conventional techniques, and their results compared with V s and u r measurements performed on the same samples. It is observed that the quality of samples indicated by these measurements is very similar to those inferred from traditional disturbance measures, with V s being the more reliable indicator. A tentative empirically derived criterion, based on samples tested in this project, is proposed to quantify sample disturbance combining both V s and u r measurements. Further work using this criterion on different materials is important so as to test its usefulness.

The objective of this research was to optimise the rheological parameters, hardened properties, and setting times of cement grouts containing metakaolin (MTK), viscosity-modifying agent (VMA) and superplasticiser (SP). All mixes were made with water-to-binder ratio (W/B) of 0.40. The replacement of cement by MTK was varied from 6% to 20% (by mass), and dosages of SP and VMA were varied from 0.3% to 1.4%, and 0.01% and 0.06% (by mass of binder), respectively. Increased SP led to an increase in fluidity, reduction in flow time, plate cohesion, rheological parameters, and an increase in the setting times. Increased VMA demonstrated a reduction in fluidity, an increase in Marsh cone time, plate cohesion, yield stress, and plastic viscosity. Results indicate that the use of MTK increased yield stress, plastic viscosity, cohesion plate, and flow time due to the higher surface area associated with an increase in the water demand. MTK reduced mini-slump and setting times, and improved compressive strength.
