The application of an aluminum-based microstructured reactor/heat-exchanger for measuring reaction kinetics in the explosive region is presented. Platinum-catalyzed ammonia oxidation was chosen as a test reaction to demonstrate the feasibility of the method. The reaction kinetics was investigated in a wide range of conditions [NH3 partial pressure: 0.03-0.20 atm, O-2 partial pressure: 0.10-0.88atm; reactant flow 2000-3000 cm(3) min(-1) (STP); temperature 240-360degreesC] over a supported Pt/Al2O3 catalyst (mass of Al2O3 layer in the reactor, 1.95 mg; Pt/Al molar ratio, 0.71; Pt dispersion, 20%). The maximum temperature non-uniformity in the microstructured reactor was ca. 5degreesC, even at conditions corresponding to an adiabatic temperature rise of 1400degreesC. Based on the data obtained, a previous kinetic model for ammonia oxidation was extended. The modified 13-step model describes the data in a considerably wider range of conditions including those with high ammonia loadings and high reaction temperatures. The results indicate the large potential of microstructured devices as reliable tools for kinetic research of highly exothermic reactions.

Robust, active, anatase titania films, 250 nm thick, are deposited onto glass at low temperatures, i.e., 2.0 for the photocatalytic mineralization of stearic acid. These films are typically 6.9 times more active than a sample of commercial self-cleaning glass, comprising a 15 nm layer of fitania deposited by CVD, mainly because they are much thicker and, therefore, absorb more of the incident UV light. The most active of the films tested comprised particles of P25, but lacked any significant physical robustness. Similar results, but much more quickly obtained, were generated using a photocatalyst- sensitive ink, based on the redox dye, resazurin, Rz. All fitania films tested, including those produced by magnetrom sputtering exhibited photo-induced superhydrophilicity. The possible future application of PAR-DG-MS for producing very active photocatalytic films on substrates not renowned for their high temperature stabilities, such as plastics, is noted. Semicarbazide (SEM), the marker residue for the banned nitrofuran veterinary antibiotic nitrofurazone (NFZ), has been detected regularly in foods (47% of recent nitrofuran EU Rapid Alerts involve SEM). However, the validity of SEM as a definitive marker for NFZ has been undermined by SEM arising from other sources including azodicarbonamide, a plastics blowing agent and flour treatment additive. An inexpensive screening test for SEM in food matrices is needed-all SEM testing currently uses expensive LC-MS/MS instrumentation. We now report the first production of antibodies against derivatised SEM. A novel carboxyphenyl SEM derivative was used to raise a polyclonal antibody that has been incorporated into a semi-quantitative microtitre plate ELISA, validated according to the criteria set out in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC, for use with chicken muscle. The antibody is highly specific for derivatised SEM, cross-reactivity being 1.7% with NFZ and negligible with a wide range of other nitrofurans and poultry drugs. Samples are derivatised with o-nitrobenzaldehyde and simultaneously protease digested before extraction by cation exchange SPE. The ELISA has a SEM detection capability (CC beta) of 0.25 mu g kg(-1) when a threshold of 0.21 mu g kg(-1) is applied to the selection of samples for confirmation (lowest observed 0.25 mu g kg(-1) fortified sample, n = 20), thus satisfying the EU nitrofurans' minimum required performance limit of 1 mu g kg(-1). N-FZ-incurred muscles (12) containing SEM at 0.5-5.0 mu g kg(-1) by LC-MS/MS, all screened positive by this ELISA protocol which is also applicable to egg and chicken liver. (C) 2007 Elsevier BN. Despite their widespread use, there is a paucity of information concerning the effect of storage on the rheological properties of pharmaceutical gels that contain organic and inorganic additives. Therefore, this study examined the effect of storage (1 month at either 4 or 37 degrees C) on the rheological and mechanical properties of gels composed of either hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (3-5% w/w, HPMC) or hydroxyethylcellulose (3-5% w/w, HEC) and containing or devoid of dispersed organic (tetracycline hydrochloride 2% w/w) or inorganic (iron oxide 0.1% w/w) agents. The mechanical properties were measured using texture profile analysis whereas the rheological properties were analyzed using continuous shear rheometry and modeled using the Power Law model. All formulations exhibited pseudoplastic flow with minimal thixotropy. Increasing polymer concentration (3-5% w/w) significantly increased the consistency, hardness, compressibility, and adhesiveness of the formulations due to increased polymer chain entanglement. Following storage (I month at 4 and 37 degrees C) the consistency and mechanical properties of additive free HPMC gets (but not HEC gels) increased, due to the time-dependent development of polymer chain entanglements. Incorporation of tetracycline hydrochloride significantly decreased and increased the rheological and mechanical properties of HPMC and HEC gels, respectively. Conversely, the incorporation of iron oxide did not affect these properties. Following storage, the rheological and mechanical properties of HPMC and HEC formulations were markedly compromised. This effect was greater following storage at 37 than at 4 degrees C and, additionally, greater in the presence of tetracycline hydrochloride than iron oxide. It is suggested that the loss of rheological/mechanical structure was due to chain depolymerization, facilitated by the redox properties of tetracycline hydrochloride and iron oxide. These observations have direct implications for the design and formulation of gels containing an active pharmaceutical ingredient. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

This study reports the effects of: the molecular weight ratio of poly(epsilon -caprolactone) (PCL) in blends containing polymer of high (50 000 g mol(-1)) and low (4000 g mol(-1)) molecular weight; the concentration (0, 1, and 5 wt-%) of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone/iodine) (PVP/I); and storage at 30 degreesC and 75% relative humidity; on the thermomechanical properties of films prepared by solvent evaporation from solutions containing both PCL and PVP/I. The tensile properties were found to be statistically dependent on the molecular weight ratio of PCL but not on the concentration of PVP/I. The reductions in tensile strength and elongation at break associated with increasing amounts of low molecular weight PCL were attributed to a reduction in the concentration of chain entanglements. No changes were observed in viscoelastic properties or the glass transition temperature. Following storage there were no changes in the tensile strength, glass transition temperature, or viscoelastic properties of the films; however, significant reductions in elongation at break were observed. It is suggested that this is due to hydrolytic chain scission of amorphous PCL. Inclusion of 5 wt-% PVP/I increased this process in films containing 100:0 and 80:20 high/low molecular weight PCL (but not 60.40), but the extent of this was small. This study highlighted significant aging properties of PCL in a moist atmosphere. Consequently, it is recommended that suitable packaging materials should be employed to control the exposure of PCL films to water during storage.

Melt viscosity is a key indicator of product quality in polymer extrusion processes. However, real time monitoring and control of viscosity is difficult to achieve. In this article, a novel “soft sensor” approach based on dynamic gray-box modeling is proposed. The soft sensor involves a nonlinear finite impulse response model with adaptable linear parameters for real-time prediction of the melt viscosity based on the process inputs; the model output is then used as an input of a model with a simple-fixed structure to predict the barrel pressure which can be measured online. Finally, the predicted pressure is compared to the measured value and the corresponding error is used as a feedback signal to correct the viscosity estimate. This novel feedback structure enables the online adaptability of the viscosity model in response to modeling errors and disturbances, hence producing a reliable viscosity estimate. The experimental results on different material/die/extruder confirm the effectiveness of the proposed “soft sensor” method based on dynamic gray-box modeling for real-time monitoring and control of polymer extrusion processes. To formulate therapeutic proteins into polymeric devices the protein is typically in the solid state, which can be achieved by the process of freeze-drying. However, freeze-drying not only risks denaturing the protein but it can adversely affect the cure characteristics of protein-loaded silicone elastomers. This study demonstrates that a variation in the parameters of the freeze-dryer can significantly affect the residual moisture content of freeze-dried BSA, which in turn has an effect on the bulk density and flow properties of the BSA. The bulk density and flow properties of the BSA subsequently affect the cure characteristics of BSA-loaded silicone elastomers. An increase in the residual moisture content results in the freeze-dried BSA having a decreased bulk density and poor flow properties which can have a detrimental effect on the cure characteristics of a freeze-dried BSA-loaded silicone elastomer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composites of recycled carbon fiber (CF) with up to 30 wt % loading with polyethylene (PE) were prepared via melt compounding. The morphology of the composites and the degree of dispersion of the CF in the PE matrix was examined using scanning electron microscopy, and revealed the CF to be highly dispersed at all loadings and strong interfacial adhesion to exist between the CF and PE. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy were used to characterize the surface chemistry and potential bonding sites of recycled CF. Both the Young's modulus and ultimate tensile stress increased with increasing CF loading, but the percentage stress at break was unchanged up to 5 wt % loading, then decreased with further successive addition of CF. The effect of CF on the elastic modulus of PE was examined using the Halpin-Tsai and modified Cox models, the former giving a better fit with the values determined experimentally. The electrical conductivity of the PE matrix was enhanced by about 11 orders of magnitude on addition of recycled CF with a percolation threshold of 7 and 15 wt % for 500-mu m and 3-mm thick samples.
