Due to their maternal mode of inheritance, mitochondrial markers can be regarded as almost 'ideal' tools in evolutionary studies of conifer populations. In the present study, polymorphism was analysed at one mitochondrial intron (nad 1, exon B/C) in 23 native European Pinus sylvestris populations. In a preliminary screening for variation using a polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism approach, two length variants were identified. By fully sequencing the 2.5 kb region, the observed length polymorphism was found to result from the insertion of a 31 bp sequence, with no other mutations observed within the intron. A set of primers was designed flanking the observed mutation, which identified a novel sequence-tagged-site mitochondrial marker for P. sylvestris. Analysis of 747 trees from the 23 populations using these primers revealed the occurrence of two distinct haplotypes in Europe. Within the Iberian Peninsula, the two haplotypes exhibited extensive population differentiation (Phi(ST) = 0.59; P less than or equal to 0.001) and a marked geographical structuring. In the populations of central and northern Europe, one haplotype largely predominated, with the second being found in only one individual of one population.

La3FMo4O16 crystallizes in the triclinic crystal system with space group P (1) over bar [a = 724.86(2) pm, b = 742.26(2) pm, c = 1469.59(3) pm, a = 101.683(2)degrees, beta 102.118(2)degrees, gamma = 100.279(2)degrees] with two formula units per unit cell. The three crystallographically independent La3+ cations show a coordination number of nine each, with one F- and eight O2- anions forming distorted monocapped square antiprisms. The fluoride anion is coordinated by all three lanthanum cations to form a nearly planar triangle. Besides three crystallographically independent tetrahedral [MoO4](2-) units, a fourth one with a higher coordination number (CN = 4 +1) can be found in the crystal structure, forming a dimeric entity with a formula of [Mo2O8](4-) consisting of two edge-connected square pyramids. Several spectroscopic measurements were performed on the title compound, such as infrared, Raman, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Furthermore, La3FMo4O16 was investigated for its capacity to work as host material for doping with luminescent active cations, such as Ce3+ or Pr3+. Therefore, luminescence spectroscopic as well as EPR measurements were performed with doped samples of the title compound. Both the pure and the doped compounds can be synthesized by fusing La2O3, LaF3 and MoO3 (ratio 4:1:12; ca. 1 % CeF3 and PrF3 as dopant, respectively) in evacuated silica ampoules at 850 degrees C for 7 d.

Ionising radiation plays a key role in therapy due to its ability to directly induce DNA damage, in particular DNA double-strand breaks leading to cell death. Cells have multiple repair pathways which attempt to maintain genomic stability. DNA repair proteins have become key targets for therapy, using small molecule inhibitors, in combination with radiation and or chemotherapeutic agents as a means of enhancing cell killing. Significant advances in our understanding of the response of cells to radiation exposures has come from the observation of non-targeted effects where cells respond via mechanisms other than those which are a direct consequence of energy-dependent DNA damage. Typical of these is bystander signalling where cells respond to the fact that their neighbours have been irradiated. Bystander cells show a DNA damage response which is distinct from directly irradiated cells. In bystander cells, ATM- and Rad3-related (ATR) protein kinase-dependent signalling in response to stalled replication forks is an early event in the DNA damage response. The ATM protein kinase is activated downstream of ATR in bystander cells. This offers the potential for differential approaches for the modulation of bystander and direct effects with repair inhibitors which may impact on the response of tumours and on the protection of normal tissues during radiotherapy. We report the discovery of a new transiting close-in giant planet, WASP-24 b, in a 2.341 day orbit, 0.037 AU from its F8-9 type host star. By matching the star's spectrum with theoretical models, we infer an effective temperature T eff = 6075 ± 100 K and a surface gravity of log g = 4.15 ± 0.10. A comparison of these parameters with theoretical isochrones and evolutionary mass tracks places only weak constraints on the age of the host star, which we estimate to be 3.8+1.3 –1.2 Gyr. The planetary nature of the companion was confirmed by radial velocity measurements and additional photometric observations. These data were fit simultaneously in order to determine the most probable parameter set for the system, from which we infer a planetary mass of 1.071+0.036 –0.038 M Jup and radius 1.3+0.039 –0.037 R Jup.

A synthesis of new bidentate pyridines has been developed, starting from ?-pinene. A copper complex of the pyridine-oxazoline ligands catalyzes asym. allylic oxidn. of cyclic olefins with good conversion rates and acceptable enantioselectivity (?67% ee). The imidazolium salt I has been identified as a precursor of the N,N'-unsym. N-heterocyclic carbene ligand, which upon complexation with palladium, catalyzed the intramol. amide enolate ?-arylation leading to oxindole in excellent yield but with low enantioselectivity.

Decomposition of methyl 2-diazophenylacetate in the presence of silanes and a chiral dirhodium(11) catalyst results in Si-H insertion of the intermediate carbenoid with varying degrees of enantioselectivity. New chiral dirhodium(11) carboxylate catalysts were identified using solution phase parallel synthesis techniques. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background: The incidence of type 1 diabetes in children younger than 15 years is increasing. Prediction of future incidence of this disease will enable adequate fund allocation for delivery of care to be planned. We aimed to establish 15-year incidence trends for childhood type 1 diabetes in European centres, and thereby predict the future burden of childhood diabetes in Europe.
Methods: 20 population-based EURODIAB registers in 17 countries registered 29 311 new cases of type 1 diabetes, diagnosed in children before their 15th birthday during a 15-year period, 1989–2003. Age-specific log linear rates of increase were estimated in five geographical regions, and used in conjunction with published incidence rates and population projections to predict numbers of new cases throughout Europe in 2005, 2010, 2015, and 2020.
Findings: Ascertainment was better than 90% in most registers. All but two registers showed significant yearly increases in incidence, ranging from 0·6% to 9·3%. The overall annual increase was 3·9% (95% CI 3·6–4·2), and the increases in the age groups 0–4 years, 5–9 years, and 10–14 years were 5·4% (4·8–6·1), 4·3% (3·8–4·8), and 2·9% (2·5–3·3), respectively. The number of new cases in Europe in 2005, is estimated as 15 000, divided between the 0–4 year, 5–9 year, and 10–14 year age-groups in the ratio 24%, 35%, and 41%, respectively. In 2020, the predicted number of new cases is 24 000, with a doubling in numbers in children younger than 5 years and a more even distribution across age-groups than at present (29%, 37%, and 34%, respectively). Prevalence under age 15 years is predicted to rise from 94 000 in 2005, to 160 000 in 2020.
Interpretation: If present trends continue, doubling of new cases of type 1 diabetes in European children younger than 5 years is predicted between 2005 and 2020, and prevalent cases younger than 15 years will rise by 70%. Adequate health-care resources to meet these children’s needs should be made available.

This paper presents a new architecture together with practical results for a high performance analogue retrodirective array architecture with the following significant advantages: (1) It is able to constructively combine signals on receive, as well as on transmit, a feature not seen before on this type of array, (2) It is capable of operating with real life communication received signal levels as low as -120dBm. This work opens the way for fully co-operating Retrodirective arrays for use on un-stabilized co-operating mobile platforms where maximum S/N simultaneously on receive and on retransmit is automatically guaranteed.
