We propose a new mechanism of high-order harmonic generation during an interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with underdense plasma. A tightly focused laser pulse creates a cavity in plasma pushing electrons aside and exciting the wake wave and the bow wave. At the joint of the cavity wall and the bow wave boundary, an annular spike of electron density is formed. This spike surrounds the cavity and moves together with the laser pulse. Collective motion of electrons in the spike driven by the laser field generates high-order harmonics. A strong localization of the electron spike, its robustness to oscillations imposed by the laser field and, consequently, its ability to produce high-order harmonics is explained by catastrophe theory. The proposed mechanism explains the experimental observations of high-order harmonics with the 9 TW J-KAREN laser (JAEA, Japan) and the 120 TW Astra Gemini laser (CLF RAL, UK) [A. S. Pirozhkov, et al., arXiv:1004.4514 (2010); A. S. Pirozhkov et al, AIP Proceedings, this volume]. The theory is corroborated by high-resolution two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

The aim of this work is to determine the out-of-field survival of cells irradiated with either the primary field or scattered radiation in the presence and absence of intercellular communication following delivery of conformal, IMRT and VMAT treatment plans. Single beam, conformal, IMRT and VMAT plans were created to deliver 3 Gy to half the area of a T80 flask containing either DU-145 or AGO-1522 cells allowing intercellular communication between the in-and out-of-field cell populations. The same plans were delivered to a similar custom made phantom used to hold two T25 culture flasks, one flask in-field and one out-of-field to allow comparison of cell survival responses when intercellular communication is physically inhibited. Plans were created for the delivery of 8 Gy to the more radio-resistant DU-145 cells only in the presence and absence of intercellular communication. Cell survival was determined by clonogenic assay. In both cell lines, the out-of-field survival was not statistically different between delivery techniques for either cell line or dose. There was however, a statistically significant difference between survival out-of-field when intercellular communication was intact (single T80 culture flask) or inhibited (multiple T25 culture flasks) to in-field for all plans. No statistically significant difference was observed in-field with or without cellular communication to out-of-field for all plans. These data demonstrate out-of-field effects as important determinants of cell survival following exposure to modulated irradiation fields when cellular communication between differentially irradiated cell populations is present. This data is further evidence that refinement of existing radiobiological models to include indirect cell killing effects is required.

Because unemployment benefit reforms typically package together a number of changes, few existing evaluations have been able to isolate the effects of changes in job search monitoring intensity on benefit recipient stocks or flows. Those few studies that do so draw mixed conclusions. This paper provides new estimates of monitoring impacts by exploiting plausibly exogenous periods where search monitoring has been temporarily withdrawn - with the regime otherwise unchanged - during a series of benefit office refurbishments in Northern Ireland. As we would expect from search theory, withdrawal of monitoring significantly increases the stock of unemployment benefit recipients via reduced outflows. © The London School of Economics and Political Science 2008.

Because unemployment benefit reforms tend to package together changes to job search requirements, monitoring and assistance, few existing studies have been able to empirically isolate the effects of job search monitoring intensity on the behaviour of unemployment benefit claimants. This paper exploits periods where monitoring has been temporarily withdrawn during a series of Benefit Office refurbishments - with the regime otherwise unchanged - to allow such identification. During these periods of zero monitoring the hazard rates for exits from claimant unemployment and for job entry both fall. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In this paper, a new approach for extracting stress intensity factors (SIFs) by the extended element-free Galerkin method, through a crack closure integral (CCI) scheme, is proposed. The CCI calculation is used in conjunction with a local smoothing technique to improve the accuracy of the computed SIFs in a number of case studies of linear elastic fracture mechanics. The cases involve problems of mixed-mode, curved crack and thermo-mechanical loading. The SIFs by CCI, displacement and stress methods are compared with those based on the M-integral technique reported in the literature. The proposed CCI method involves very simple relations, and still gives good accuracy. The convergence of the results is also examined.

This paper describes the computation of stress intensity factors (SIFs) for cracks in functionally graded materials (FGMs) using an extended element-free Galerkin (XEFG) method. The SIFs are extracted through the crack closure integral (CCI) with a local smoothing technique, non-equilibrium and incompatibility formulations of the interaction integral and the displacement method. The results for mode I and mixed mode case studies are presented and compared with those available in the literature. They are found to be in good agreement where the average absolute error for the CCI with local smoothing, despite its simplicity, yielded a high level of accuracy.

The dynamics of magnetic fields with an amplitude of several tens of megagauss, generated at both sides of a solid target irradiated with a high-intensity (~1019W/cm2) picosecond laser pulse, has been spatially and temporally resolved using a proton imaging technique. The amplitude of the magnetic fields is sufficiently large to have a constraining effect on the radial expansion of the plasma sheath at the target surfaces. These results, supported by numerical simulations and simple analytical modeling, may have implications for ion acceleration driven by the plasma sheath at the rear side of the target as well as for the laboratory study of self-collimated high-energy plasma jets. © 2012 American Physical Society.

We have modeled a small sample of Seyfert galaxies that were previously identified as having simple X-ray spectra with little intrinsic absorption. The sources in this sample all contain moderately broad components of FeK-shell emission and are ideal candidates for testing the applicability of a Compton-thick accretion disk wind model to active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission components. Viewing angles through the wind allow the observer to see the absorption signature of the gas, whereas face-on viewing angles allow the observer to see the scattered light from the wind. We find that the FeK emission line profiles are well described with a model of a Compton-thick accretion disk wind of solar abundances, arising tens to hundreds of gravitational radii from the central black hole. Further, the fits require a neutral component of FeKa emission that is too narrow to arise from the inner part of the wind, and likely comes from a more distant reprocessing region. Our study demonstrates that a Compton-thick wind can have a profound effect on the observed X-ray spectrum of an AGN, even when the system is not viewed through the flow. © 2012. Aim - To describe a new method of evaluating the topographic distribution of fundus autofluorescence in eyes with retinal disease. Methods - Images of fundus autofluorescence were obtained in five patients and 34 normal volunteers using a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope (cSLO). To evaluate the topographic distribution of fundus autofluorescence throughout the posterior pole a rectangular box, 10 x 750 pixels, was used as the area of analysis. The box was placed, horizontally, across the macular region. The intensity of fundus autofluorescence of each pixel within the rectangular box was plotted against its degree of eccentricity. Profiles of fundus autofluorescence from patients were compared with those obtained from the age matched control group and with cSLO images. Results - Profiles of fundus autofluorescence appeared to represent the topographic distribution of fundus autofluorescence throughout the posterior pole appreciated in the cSLO images, and allowed rapid identification and quantification of areas of increased or decreased fundus autofluorescence. Conclusions - Fundus autofluorescence profiles appear to be useful to study the spatial distribution of fundus autofluorescence in eyes with retinal disease.

We consider the behaviour of a set of services in a stressed web environment where performance patterns may be difficult to predict. In stressed environments the performances of some providers may degrade while the performances of others, with elastic resources, may improve. The allocation of web-based providers to users (brokering) is modelled by a strategic non-cooperative angel-daemon game with risk profiles. A risk profile specifies a bound on the number of unreliable service providers within an environment without identifying the names of these providers. Risk profiles offer a means of analysing the behaviour of broker agents which allocate service providers to users. A Nash equilibrium is a fixed point of such a game in which no user can locally improve their choice of provider – thus, a Nash equilibrium is a viable solution to the provider/user allocation problem. Angel daemon games provide a means of reasoning about stressed environments and offer the possibility of designing brokers using risk profiles and Nash equilibria.

Dyslipidemia accelerates vascular complications of diabetes. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis of lipoprotein subclasses is used to evaluate a mouse model of human familial hypercholesterolemia +/- streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetes. A double knockout (DKO) mouse (low-density lipoprotein receptor [LDLr] -/-; apolipoprotein B [apoB] mRNA editing catalytic polypeptide-1 [Apobec1] -/-) was studied. Wild-type (WT) and DKO mice received sham or STZ injections at age 7 weeks, yielding control (WT-C, DKO-C) and diabetic (WT-D, DKO-D) groups. Fasting serum was collected when the mice were killed (age 40 weeks) for Cholestech analysis (Cholestech Corp, Hayward, CA) and NMR lipoprotein subclass profile. By Cholestech, fasting triglyceride and total cholesterol increased in DKO-C versus WT-C. Diabetes further increased total cholesterol in DKO. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was similar among all groups. NMR revealed that LDL in all groups was present in a subclass the size of large human LDL and was increased 48-fold in DKO-C versus WT-C animals, but was unaffected by diabetes. HDL was found in a subclass equivalent to large human HDL, and was similar among groups. In conclusion, NMR analysis reveals lipoprotein subclass distributions and the effects of genetic modification and diabetes in mice, but lack of particles the size of human small LDL and small HDL may limit the relevance of the present animal model to human disease.
