Aim. This article is a report of recruitment bias in a sample of 525-year-old patients with severe cerebral palsy.r/>
/>Background. The way in which study participants are recruited into research can be a source of bias.
/>
Method. A cross-sectional survey of 525-year-old patients with severe cerebral palsy using standardized questionnaires with parents/carers was undertaken in 2007/2008. A case register was used as the sampling frame, and 260 families were approached: 178/260 (68%) responded and 82/260 families never replied (non-respondents). Among responders: 127/178 (71%) opted in to the study, but only 123/127 were assessed, and 82/178 were opted out (or refused). Multivariable logistic regression giving odds ratios was used to study the association between participant characteristics and study outcomes (responders vs. non-responders; opting in vs. opting out; assessed vs. eligible, but not assessed).r/>
/>Results. Responders (compared with non-responders) were significantly more likely to have a family member with cerebral palsy who was male and resident in more affluent areas. Families who opted in (compared with those opting out and refusing) were more likely to have a family member with cerebral palsy and intellectual impairment and to reside in certain geographical areas. Families who were actually assessed (compared with all eligible, but not assessed) were more likely to have a family member with cerebral palsy and intellectual impairment.
/>Conclusion. Several sources of bias were identified during recruitment for this study. This has implications for the interpretation and conclusions of surveys of people with disabilities and complex needs.

Universities aim for good Space Management” so as to use the teaching space efficiently. Part of this task is to assign rooms and time-slots to teaching activities with limited numbers and capacities of lecture theaters, seminar rooms, etc. It is also common that some teaching activities require splitting into multiple events. For example, lectures can be too large to fit in one room or good teaching practice requires that seminars/tutorials are taught in small groups. Then, space management involves decisions on splitting as well as the assignments to rooms and time-slots. These decisions must be made whilst satisfying the pedagogic requirements of the institution and constraints on space resources. The efficiency of such management can be measured by the utilisation: the percentage of available seat-hours actually used. In many institutions, the observed utilisation is unacceptably low, and this provides our underlying motivation: to study the factors that affect teaching space utilisation, with the goal of improving it. We give a brief introduction to our work in this area, and then introduce a specific model for splitting. We present experimental results that show threshold phenomena and associated easy-hard-easy patterns of computational difficulty. We discuss why such behaviour is of importance for space management.

Silver colloids have been prepared by reducing AgNO3 in aqueous solution and embeded in alumina following a sol-gel procedure in the presence of Pluronic 84 ((EO)(19)(PO)(39)(EO)(19)), as surfactant. Plasma-catalytic experiments aimed at the mineralization of toluene showed that the selectivity to CO2 was significantly increased in the presence of Ag catalysts compared with results obtained using the plasma alone. In-situ studies of the ozone interaction with catalysts provide an insight into the nature of the active sites of supported silver colloids for mineralization reactions. It is noticeable that when ozone is chemisorbed on embedded Ag colloidal catalysts no change in the silver oxidation state or size is found. The population of the chemisorbed species is higher at lower temperatures, where the non-selective decomposition of ozone is smaller. The catalysts exhibit high stability, preserving the structural and textural properties after the catalytic tests, that is indeed very important in the presence of ozone. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Colloidal nanoparticle drug delivery systems have attracted much interest for their ability to enable effective formulation and delivery of therapeutic agents. The selective delivery of these nanoparticles to the disease site can be enhanced by coating the surface of the nanoparticles with targeting moieties, such as antibodies. In this current work, we demonstrate that antibodies on the surface of the particles can also elicit key biological effects. Specifically, we demonstrate the induction of apoptosis in colorectal HCT116 cancer cells using PLGA nanoparticles coated with Conatumumab (AMG 655) death receptor 5-specific antibodies (DR5-NP). We show that DR5-NP preferentially target DR5-expressing cells and present a sufficient density of antibody paratopes to induce apoptosis via DR5, unlike free AMG 655 or non-targeted control nanoparticles. We also demonstrate that DR5-targeted nanoparticles encapsulating the cytotoxic drug camptothecin are effectively targeted to the tumour cells, thereby producing enhanced cytotoxic effects through simultaneous drug delivery and apoptosis induction. These results demonstrate that antibodies on nanoparticulate surfaces can be exploited for dual modes of action to enhance the therapeutic utility of the modality. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Background: Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) results from mutations in the SERPINA1 gene and classically presents with early-onset emphysema and liver disease. The most common mutation presenting with clinical evidence is the Z mutation, while the S mutation is associated with a milder plasma deficiency. AATD is an under-diagnosed condition and the World Health Organisation recommends targeted detection programmes for AATD in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), non-responsive asthma, cryptogenic liver disease and first degree relatives of known AATD patients.

We here describe novel aspects of CD8(+) and CD4(+) T cell subset interactions that may be clinically relevant and provide new tools for regulating the reconstitution of the peripheral CD8(+) T cell pools in immune-deficient states. We show that the reconstitution capacity of transferred isolated naive CD8(+) T cells and their differentiation of effector functions is limited, but both dramatically increase upon the co-transfer of CD4(+) T cells. This helper effect is complex and determined by multiple factors. It was directly correlated to the number of helper cells, required the continuous presence of the CD4(+) T cells, dependent on host antigen-presenting cells (APCs) expressing CD40 and on the formation of CD4/CD8/APC cell clusters. By comparing the recovery of (CD44(+)CD62L(high)) T-CM and (CD44(+)CD62L(low)) T-EM CD8(+) T cells, we found that the accumulation of TCM and TEM subsets is differentially regulated. T-CM-cell accumulation depended mainly on type I interferons, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-15, but was independent of CD4(+) T-cell help. In contrast, TEM-cell expansion was mainly determined by CD4(+) T-cell help and dependent on the expression of IL-2R beta by CD8 cells, on IL-2 produced by CD4(+) T-cells, on IL-15 and to a minor extent on IL-6.

Enantiopure arene cis-tetrahydrodiols of bromobenzene and iodobenzene have been obtained in good yields, from chemoselective hydrogenation (rhodium-graphite) of the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol metabolites. Palladium-catalysed substitution of the halogen, by hydrogen, boron, nitrogen and phosphorus nucleophiles, in the acetonide derivatives, has yielded highly functionalised products for application in synthesis with potential as scaffolds for chiral ligands.

Background: Elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration is a risk factor for cardiovascular events that may add prognostic information. Statin treatment is associated with significant reductions in CRP concentrations, which appear to be unrelated to the magnitude of LDL-cholesterol reduction. We investigated the effect of atorvastatin, across its dose range, on high sensitivity (hs)CRP in subjects at high cardiovascular risk. Methods: ACTFAST was a 12 week, prospective, multicenter, open-label trial in which high-risk subjects were assigned a starting dose of atorvastatin (10, 20, 40 or 80 mg/d) based on LDL-C and status of statin use at screening (1345 statin-free [ SF] and 772 previously statin-treated [ST]). Results: At baseline, ST subjects had significantly lower hsCRP levels than SF subjects (ST group 2.31, 95% CI 2.15, 2.48 mg/L vs. SF group 3.16, 95% CI 2.98, 3.34 mg/L, p

We report the detection of a 0.6 MJ extrasolar planet by WASP-South, WASP-25b, transiting its solar-type host star every 3.76 d. A simultaneous analysis of the WASP, FTS and Euler photometry and CORALIE spectroscopy yields a planet of Rp= 1.22 RJ and Mp= 0.58 MJ around a slightly metal-poor solar-type host star, [Fe/H]=- 0.05 0.10, of R*= 0.92 Rsun and M*= 1.00 Msun. WASP-25b is found to have a density of ?p= 0.32 ?J, a low value for a sub-Jupiter mass planet. We investigate the relationship of planetary radius to planetary equilibrium temperature and host star metallicity for transiting exoplanets with a similar mass to WASP-25b, finding that these two parameters explain the radii of most low-mass planets well.
