In this investigation Raman spectroscopy was shown to be a method that could be used to monitor the polymerisation of PMMA bone cement. Presently there is no objective method that orthopaedic surgeons can use to quantify the curing process of cement during surgery. Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive, non-destructive technique that could offer such an option. Two commercially available bone cements (Palacos® R and SmartSet® HV) and different storage conditions (4 and 22°C) were used to validate the technique. Raman spectroscopy was found to be repeatable across all conditions with the completion of the polymerisation process particularly easy to establish. All tests were benchmarked against current temperature monitoring methods outlined in ISO and ASTM standards. There was found to be close agreement with the standard methods and the Raman spectroscopy used in this study.

This article examines a previously unnoticed link between the Puritan John Burgess and the Calvinist conformist George Hakewill. In 1604 Burgess preached a court sermon so outspoken and critical of James I’s religious policy that he was imprisoned. Nearly twenty years later, however, Hakewill chose to incorporate extended passages from Burgess’s sermon into the series of sermons, King David’s vow (1621), preached to Prince Charles’s household. This article considers why Burgess’s sermon became so resonant for Hakewill in the early 1620s and also demonstrates how Hakewill deliberately sought to moderate Burgess’s strident polemic. In so doing the article provides important new evidence for the politically attuned sermon culture at Prince Charles’s court in the early 1620s and also suggests how, as the parameters for clerical conformity shifted in the latter years of James’s reign, Calvinist conformists found a new appeal in the works of moderate Puritans. Liquid charge-transfer (CT) complexes were observed to form on contacting electron-rich aromatics with electron withdrawing group appended 1-alkyl-4-cyanopyridinium ionic liquids (ILs). Cooling below the melting point of the ionic liquid resulted in crystallisation of ionic liquid from the complex for 2-cyano and 3-cyano pyridinium isomers and in the formation of a 1 : 1 IL : aromatic crystalline CT-complex with the 4-cyanopyridinium isomer. The liquid structure of a 1 : 1 mixture of 1-methyl-4-cyanopyridinium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide with 1-methylnaphthalene has been probed by neutron diffraction experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. A high degree of correlation between the experimental data and the simulations was found with a significant displacement of the anions from around the cation by the aromatic species and the resulting structure having pi-pi stacks between the cations and the aromatic.

This study investigated methyl methacrylate – polymethyl methacrylate powder bed interactions through droplet analyses, using model fluids and commercially available bone cement. The effects of storage temperature of liquid monomer and powder packing configuration on drop penetration time were investigated. Methyl methacrylate showed much more rapid imbibition than caprolactone due to decrease in both contact angle and fluid viscosity. Drop penetration of caprolactone through polymethyl methacrylate increased with decrease in bed macro-voids and increase in bulk density as predicted by the modified constant drawing area penetration model and confirmed by drop penetration images. Linear relationships were found between droplet mass and drawing area with imbibition time. Further experiments showed gravimetric analysis of the polymerised methyl methacrylate – polymethyl methacrylate matrix under various storage temperatures correlated with Reynolds number and Washburn analyses. These observations have direct implications for the design of mixing and delivery systems for acrylic bone cements used in orthopaedic surgery.
