The aim of this study is to compare the positioning accuracy at different gantry angles of two electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs) support arm systems by using EPID difference images as a measure for displacement. This work presents a comparison of the mechanical performance of eight Varian aS500 (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) EPIDs, mounted using either the Varian Exact-arm or R-arm.

NiTi alloys have been widely used in the applications for micro-electro-mechanical-systems (MEMS), which often involve some precise and complex motion control. However, when using the NiTi alloys in MEMS application, the main problem to be considered is the degradation of functional property during cycling loading. This also stresses the importance of accurate prediction of the functional behavior of NiTi alloys. In the last two decades, a large number of constitutive models have been proposed to achieve the task. A portion of them focused on the deformation behavior of NiTi alloys under cyclic loading, which is a practical and non-negligible situation. Despite of the scale of modeling studies of the field in NiTi alloys, two experimental observations under uniaxial tension loading have not received proper attentions. First, a deviation from linearity well before the stress-induced martensitic transformation (SIMT) has not been modeled. Recent experiments confirmed that it is caused by the formation of stress-induced R phase. Second, the influence of the well-known localized Lüders-like SIMT on the macroscopic behavior of NiTi alloys, in particular the residual strain during cyclic loading, has not been addressed. In response, we develop a 1-D phenomenological constitutive model for NiTi alloys with two novel features: the formation of stress-induced R phase and the explicit modeling of the localized Lüders-like SIMT. The derived constitutive relations are simple and at the same time sufficient to describe the behavior of NiTi alloys. The accumulation of residual strain caused by R phase under different loading schemes is accurately described by the proposed model. Also, the residual strain caused by irreversible SIMT at different maximum loading strain under cyclic tension loading in individual samples can be explained by and fitted into a single equation in the proposed model. These results show that the proposed model successfully captures the behavior of R phase and the essence of localized SIMT.

Medical investigators in South Carolina have been on the "cutting edge" of diabetes research for a number of decades. Despite this fact, our state ranks second in the nation in diabetes prevalence, and diabetes complications are more severe here than anywhere else. It is from the efforts of these investigators that our hope for a brighter future comes. Through a concerted effort toward prevention, improvements in care, and investigation of the pathophysiology of diabetes and its complications, researchers may reduce the substantial burden of diabetes in our state and throughout the world.

We report a series of 706 patients (759 hip implants) with an average follow up of 10.5 years (range, 10-11 years) following total hip replacement (THR) using a cemented custom-made femoral stem and a cemented HDP acetabular component. The fate of every implant is known. One hundred and seventy-four patients (23%) were deceased at the time of their 10-year review all died with a functioning THR in situ. Four hundred and sixty-two patients (61%) were subsequently reviewed. One hundred and twenty three patients (16%) were assessed by telephone review, as they were too ill or unwilling to attend. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis (all components) demonstrated a median survival at 10 years of 96.05% or 95% Confidence Intervals (CI) for median survival of (94.41% to 97.22%). Revision surgery occurred in 30 cases (3.9%). Seventeen had full revisions (2.2%) and 13 (1.7%) socket revisions only. Twenty-one out of 30 revisions were for infection or dislocation. There were 2 cases (0.3%) of revision for aseptic loosening of the stem. The 10-year results of the custom femoral titanium stem are encouraging and compare well with other cemented systems.

Identification of Rhizoctonia solani, R. oryzae and R. oryzae-sativae, components of the rice sheath disease complex, is extremely difficult and often inaccurate and as a result may hinder the success of extensive breeding programmes throughout Asia. In this study, primers designed from unique regions within the rDNA internal transcribed spacers have been used to develop a rapid PCR-based diagnostic test to provide an accurate identification of the species on rice. Tests on the specificity of the primers concerned showed that they provide the means for accurate identification of the Rhizoctonia species responsible for sheath diseases in rice.

SUMMARY A study was carried out to investigate whether the action of triclabendazole sulphoxide (TCBZ.SO) against the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica is altered by inhibition of P-glycoprotein (Pgp)-linked drug efflux pumps. The Oberon TCBZ-resistant and Cullompton TCBZ-susceptible fluke isolates were used for this in vitro study and the Pgp inhibitor selected was R(+)-verapamil [R(+)-VPL]. For experiments with the Oberon isolate, flukes were incubated for 24 h with either R(+)-VPL (1Ã10-4 m) on its own, TCBZ.SO (15 µg mL-1) alone, a combination of R(+)-VPL (1Ã10-4 m) plus TCBZ.SO (15 µg mL-1), TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) on its own, or a combination of TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) plus R(+)-VPL (1Ã10-4 m). They were also incubated in TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone or in combination with R(+)-VPL (1Ã10-4 m) until they became inactive; and in TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone for a time to match that of the combination inactivity time. Flukes from the Cullompton isolate were treated with either TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone or in combination with R(+)-VPL (1Ã10-4 m) until they became inactive, or with TCBZ.SO (50 µg mL-1) alone time-matched to the combination inactivity time. Morphological changes resulting from drug treatment and following Pgp inhibition were assessed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Incubation in R(+)-VPL alone had a minimal effect on either isolate. TCBZ.SO treatment had a relatively greater impact on the TCBZ-susceptible Cullompton isolate. When R(+)-VPL was combined with TCBZ.SO in the incubation medium, however, the surface disruption to both isolates was more severe than that seen after TCBZ.SO treatment alone; also, the time taken to reach inactivity was shorter. More significantly, though, the potentiation of drug activity was greater in the Oberon isolate; also, it was more distinct at the higher concentration of TCBZ.SO. So, the Oberon isolate appears to be particularly sensitive to efflux pump inhibition. The results of this study suggest that enhanced drug efflux in the Oberon isolate may be involved in the mechanism of resistance to TCBZ.

A study has been carried out to investigate whether the action of triclabendazole (TCBZ) against Fasciola hepatica is altered by the inhibition of P-glycoprotein (Pgp)-linked drug efflux pumps. The Sligo TCBZ-resistant and Cullompton TCBZ-susceptible fluke isolates were used for these experiments and the Pgp inhibitor selected was R(+)-verapamil [R-VPL]. In the first experiment, flukes were initially incubated for 2 h in R-VPL (100 µM), then incubated for a further 22 h in R-VPL+triclabendazole sulphoxide (TCBZ.SO) (50 µg/ml, or 0.1327 µM). For controls, flukes were incubated for 24 h in R-VPL and TCBZ.SO on their own. In a second experiment, flukes were removed from the incubation media following cessation of movement. In the third experiment, Sligo flukes were incubated in lower concentrations of R-VPL (10 µM) and TCBZ.SO (15 µg/ml, or 0.0398 µM). Morphological changes resulting from drug treatment and following Pgp inhibition were assessed by means of scanning electron microscopy. Incubation in R-VPL alone had minimal effect on either isolate. After treatment with TCBZ.SO alone, there was greater surface disruption to the Cullompton than Sligo isolate. However, combined treatment of R-VPL+TCBZ.SO led to more severe surface changes to the Sligo isolate than with TCBZ.SO on its own; this potentiation of drug activity was not seen with the Cullompton isolate. The phenomenon was evident at both concentrations of TCBZ.SO. Inclusion of R-VPL in the incubation medium also reduced the time taken for the flukes to become inactive; again, this effect was more distinct with the Sligo isolate. The results of this study support the concept of altered drug efflux in TCBZ-resistant flukes and indicate that drug transporters may play a role in the development of drug resistance.

Summary: We present a new R package, diveRsity, for the calculation of various diversity statistics, including common diversity partitioning statistics (?, G) and population differentiation statistics (D, GST ', ? test for population heterogeneity), among others. The package calculates these estimators along with their respective bootstrapped confidence intervals for loci, sample population pairwise and global levels. Various plotting tools are also provided for a visual evaluation of estimated values, allowing users to critically assess the validity and significance of statistical tests from a biological perspective. diveRsity has a set of unique features, which facilitate the use of an informed framework for assessing the validity of the use of traditional F-statistics for the inference of demography, with reference to specific marker types, particularly focusing on highly polymorphic microsatellite loci. However, the package can be readily used for other co-dominant marker types (e.g. allozymes, SNPs). Detailed examples of usage and descriptions of package capabilities are provided. The examples demonstrate useful strategies for the exploration of data and interpretation of results generated by diveRsity. Additional online resources for the package are also described, including a GUI web app version intended for those with more limited experience using R for statistical analysis. © 2013 British Ecological Society.
