We present first-principles calculations for a number of metals adsorbed on several different metallic substrates. Some of these systems are very relevant in electrochemistry, especially in the field of underpotential deposition phenomena. The present studies reveal the existence of a relationship between the excess binding energy and the surface energy difference between substrate and adsorbate. Comparisons with experimental underpotential shifts show that excess binding energies are systematically underestimated. By analyzing experimental information on different systems, we conclude that this discrepancy between our vacuum calculations and experiments carried out in an electrolytic solution is likely to be due to anion adsorption and/or solvent effects.

To obtain the surface stress changes due to the adsorption of metal monolayers onto metallic surfaces, a new model derived from thermodynamic considerations is presented. Such a model is based on continuum Monte Carlo simulations with embedded atom method potentials in the canonical ensemble, and it is extended to consider the behavior on different islands adsorbed onto (111) substrate surfaces. Homoepitaxial and heteroepitaxial systems are studied. Pseudomorphic growth is not observed for small metal islands with considerable positive misfit with the substrate. Instead, the islands become compressed upon increase of their size. A simple model is proposed to interpolate between the misfits of atoms in small islands and the pseudomorphic behavior of the monolayer.

Palladium clusters have been deposited on the surface of a Au(111) electrode with the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. The distance over which the tip was moved towards the surface has a decisive influence on the properties of the clusters: the larger this distance, the larger the generated clusters, and the more stable they are. These findings are supported by computer simulations, which further suggest that the larger clusters contain a sizable amount of gold, which enhances their stability. Dissolution of the clusters occurs from the edges rather than layer by layer.

Structural and kinetic aspects of 2-D irreversible metal deposition under potentiostatic conditions are analyzed by means of dynamic Monte Carlo simulations employing embedded atom potentials for a model system. Three limiting models, all considering adatom diffusion, were employed to describe adatom deposition. The first model (A) considers adatom deposition on any free substrate site on the surface at the same rate. The second model (B) considers adatom deposition only on substrate sites which exhibit no neighboring sites occupied by adatoms. The third model (C) allows deposition at higher rates on sites presenting neighboring sites occupied by adatoms. Under the proper conditions, the coverage (theta) versus time (t) relationship for the three cases can be heuristically fitted to the functional form theta = 1 - exp(-betat(alpha)), where alpha and beta are parameters. We suggest that the value of the parameter alpha can be employed to distinguish experimentally between the three cases. While model A trivially delivers a = 1, models B and C are characterized by alpha 1, respectively.

We present a self-consistent tight-binding formalism to calculate the forces on individual atoms due to the flow of electrical current in atomic-scale conductors. Simultaneously with the forces, the method yields the local current density and the local potential in the presence of current flow, allowing a direct comparison between these quantities. The method is applicable to structures of arbitrary atomic geometry and can be used to model current-induced mechanical effects in realistic nanoscale junctions and wires. The formalism is implemented within a simple Is tight-binding model and is applied to two model structures; atomic chains and a nanoscale wire containing a vacancy.

A major concern in recent political discourse is that government has become both isolated from and unresponsive to its citizens. Democracy, by definition, demands a two-way flow of communication between government and civil society and it is now commonly argued that ICTs have the potential to facilitate such improved flows of communication--hence, e-democracy and e-consultation. The preliminary research findings presented here are part of a larger ongoing research project on e-consultation on the island of Ireland (see http://e-consultation.org). The paper initially draws on focus group discussions on the theme of (e)consultation conducted amongst activist citizens. High levels of frustration, scepticism and cynicism were expressed on the form, nature and process of extant consultation processes. The main focus addressed in this paper, however, is on how these citizens envisage ICT being used in future e-consultations. In general, most focus group participants were open to the use of ICT in future e-consultation processes but the consensus was that community groups did not currently have access to an appropriate level or range of infrastructure, technologies or skills. As a follow up to the focus group findings the research group ran a number of demonstrations on e-consultation technologies with invited activist citizens. Technologies introduced included chat room, video-conferencing, WikiPedia, WebIQ, Zing and others. The main preliminary findings and feedback from one such demonstration, and our own observations, are then presented which suggest that the potential does exist for using e-consultation technologies in local democracy and in local government to drive positive change in the government-citizen relationship. We present no na¯ve solutions here; we merely point to some possibilities and we acknowledge that ICT alone is very unlikely to be a panacea for the declining levels of citizen participation in most democratic societies.

A series of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, available from the bacterial dioxygenase-catalysed oxidation of monosubstituted benzene substrates using Pseudomonas putida UV4, have been converted to the corresponding catechols using both a heterogeneous catalyst (Pd/C) and a naphthalene cis-diol dehydrogenase enzyme present in whole cells of the recombinant strain Escherichia coli DH5 alpha(pUC129: nar B). A comparative study of the merits of both routes to 3-substituted catechols has been carried out and the two methods have been found to be complementary. A similarity in mechanism for catechol formation under both enzymatic and chemoenzymatic conditions, involving regioselective oxidation of the hydroxyl group at C-1, has been found using deuterium labelled toluene cis-dihydrodiols. The potential, of combining a biocatalytic step (dioxygenase-catalysed cis-dihydroxylation) with a chemocatalytic step (Pd/C-catalysed dehydrogenation), into a one-pot route to catechols, from the parent substituted benzene substrates, has been realised.

This work investigates the polyanion initiated gelation process in fabricating chitosan-TPP (tripolyphosphate) nanoparticles in the size range of 100-250 nm intended to be used as carriers for the delivery of gene or protein macromolecules. It demonstrates that ionic gelation of cationic chitosan molecules offers a flexible and easily controllable process for systematically and predictably manipulating particle size and surface charge which are important properties in determining gene transfection efficacy if the nanoparticles are used as non-viral vectors for gene delivery, or as delivery carriers for protein molecules. Variations in chitosan molecular weight, chitosan concentration, chitosan to TPP weight ratio and solution pH value were examined systematically for their effects on nanoparticle size, intensity of surface charge, and tendency of particle aggregation so as to enable speedy fabrication of chitosan nanoparticles with predetermined properties. The chitosan-TPP nanoparticles exhibited a high positive surface charge across a wide pH range, and the isoelectric point (IEP) of the nanoparticles was found to be at pH 9.0. Detailed imaging analysis of the particle morphology revealed that the nanoparticles possess typical shapes of polyhedrons (e.g., pentagon and hexagon), indicating a similar crystallisation mechanism during the particle formation and growth process. This study demonstrates that systematic design and modulation of the surface charge and particle size of chitosan-TPP nanoparticles can be readily achieved with the right control of critical processing parameters, especially the chitosan to TPP weight ratio. In this work activated dolomite adsorption was investigated for removal of acidic gaseous pollutants. Charring was found to be an effective method for the activation of dolomite. This thermal processing resulted in partial decomposition, yielding a calcite and magnesium oxide structure. Adsorbents were produced over a range of char temperatures (750, 800 and 850 °C) and char times (1–8 h). The surface properties and the adsorption capability of raw and thermally treated dolomite sorbents were investigated using porosimetry, SEM and XRD. The sorbates individually investigated were CO2 and NO2. Volumetric equilibrium isotherm determinations were produced in order to quantify sorbate capacity on the various sorbents. The equilibrium data were successfully described using the Freundlich isotherm model. Despite relatively low surface area characteristics of the activated dolomite, there was a high capacity for the acidic gas sorbates investigated, showing a maximum of 12.6 mmol/g (554 mg/g) for CO2 adsorption and 9.93 mmol/g (457 mg/g) for NO2 adsorption. Potentially the most cost effective result from the work concerns the adsorptive capacity for the naturally occurring material, which gave a capacity of 9.71 mmol/g (427 mg/g) for CO2 adsorption and 4.18 mmol/g (193 mg/g) for NO2 adsorption. These results indicate that dolomitic sorbents are potentially cost effective materials for acidic gases adsorption.

Experimental data of the adsorption of reactive dyestuffs onto Filtrasorb 400 activated carbon (FS400) were determined in an equilibrium isotherm study. As most industrial wastewater contains more than one pollutant, an investigation into the effect of multisolute systems (using the unhydrolysed form of the reactive dyes) on the adsorption capacity was undertaken. Equilibrium isotherm models were employed to describe the adsorption capacities of single, binary and ternary dye solutions. The results of these analyses showed that adsorption of reactive dyes from single and multisolute systems can be successfully described by Langmuir, and Redlich–Peterson equilibrium isotherm models. Experimental data indicated that competitive adsorption for active sites on the carbon surface results in a reduction in the overall uptake capacity of the reactive dyes investigated.
