In this study, the surface properties of and work required to remove 12 commercially available and developmental catheters from a model biological medium (agar), a measure of catheter lubricity, were characterised and the relationships between these properties were examined using multiple regression and correlation analysis. The work required for removal of catheter sections (7 cm) from a model biological medium (1% w/w agar) were examined using tensile analysis. The water wettability of the catheters were characterised using dynamic contact angle analysis, whereas surface roughness was determined using atomic force microscopy. Significant differences in the ease of removal were observed between the various catheters, with the silicone-based materials generally exhibiting the greatest ease of removal. Similarly, the catheters exhibited a range of advancing and receding contact angles that were dependent on the chemical nature of each catheter. Finally, whilst the microrugosities of the various catheters differed, no specific relationship to the chemical nature of the biomaterial was apparent. Using multiple regression analysis, the relationship between ease of removal, receding contact angle and surface roughness was defined as: Work done (N mm) 17.18 + 0.055 Rugosity (nm)-0.52 Receding contact angle (degrees) (r = 0.49). Interestingly, whilst the relationship between ease of removal and surface roughness was significant (r = 0.48, p = 0.0005), in which catheter lubricity increased as the surface roughness decreased, this was not the case with the relationship between ease of removal and receding contact angle (r = -0.18, p > 0.05). This study has therefore uniquely defined the contributions of each of these surface properties to catheter lubricity. Accordingly, in the design of urethral catheters. it is recommended that due consideration should be directed towards biomaterial surface roughness to ensure maximal ease of catheter removal. Furthermore, using the method described in this study, differences in the lubricity of the various catheters were observed that may be apparent in their clinical use. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: Environmental turbulence including rapid changes in technology and markets has resulted in the need for new approaches to performance measurement and benchmarking. There is a need for studies that attempt to measure and benchmark upstream, leading or developmental aspects of organizations. Therefore, the aim of this paper is twofold. The first is to conduct an in-depth case analysis of lead performance measurement and benchmarking leading to the further development of a conceptual model derived from the extant literature and initial survey data. The second is to outline future research agendas that could further develop the framework and the subject area.

Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case analysis involving repeated in-depth interviews with managers in organisational areas of upstream influence in the case organisations.

Findings: It was found that the effect of external drivers for lead performance measurement and benchmarking was mediated by organisational context factors such as level of progression in business improvement methods. Moreover, the legitimation of the business improvement methods used for this purpose, although typical, had been extended beyond their original purpose with the development of bespoke sets of lead measures.

Practical implications: Examples of methods and lead measures are given that can be used by organizations in developing a programme of lead performance measurement and benchmarking.

Originality/value: There is a paucity of in-depth studies relating to the theory and practice of lead performance measurement and benchmarking in organisations.

The primary aim of this article is to critically analyse the development of Six Sigma theory and practice within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) using a multiple case study approach. The article also explores the subsequent development of Lean Six Sigma as a means of addressing the perceived limitations of the efficacy of Six Sigma in this context. The overarching theoretical framework is that of absorptive capacity, where Six Sigma is conceptualized as new knowledge to be absorbed by smaller firms. The findings from a multiple case study involving repeat interviews and focus groups informed the development of an analytical model demonstrating the dynamic underlying routines for the absorptive capacity process and the development of a number of summative propositions relating the characteristics of SMEs to Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma implementation.

OBJECTIVE:
To investigate the influences of resources and food-related goals on the variety of food choice among older people.
DESIGN:
A questionnaire-based survey in eight European countries: Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Spain.
SUBJECTS:
Participants (n 3200) were above 65 years of age and living in their own homes. The samples were quota samples, eight groups of fifty in each country, based on gender, age and living circumstances, reflecting the diversity of each of the national populations based on education, income and urbanization of living environment.
RESULTS:
Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that income, health status, access to a car and living arrangement affected the level of dietary variety. The perceived level of different food-related resources impacted the consumption of a varied diet over and above actual resource levels. Food-related goals contributed to variety of food intake that was not accounted for by the amount of material resources possessed or the social and other resources perceived to be possessed.
CONCLUSIONS:
Older people's variety of food intake depended on material resources (e.g. monthly income, access to a car, living arrangement, physical and mental health). However, in addition to these variables, the way older people perceived other resources, such as their level of appetite, their food knowledge, their perception of the distance to the shops, access to high-quality products, having better kitchen facilities, access to good service providers and support from friends and neighbours, all contributed to how varied a diet they ate.

Continuous large-scale changes in technology and the globalization of markets have resulted in the need for many SMEs to use innovation as a means of seeking competitive advantage where innovation includes both technological and organizational perspectives (Tapscott, 2009). However, there is a paucity of systematic and empirical research relating to the implementation of innovation management in the context of SMEs. The aim of this article is to redress this imbalance via an empirical study created to develop and test a model of innovation implementation in SMEs. This study uses Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to test the plausibility of an innovation model, developed from earlier studies, as the basis of a questionnaire survey of 395 SMEs in the UK. The resultant model and construct relationship results are further probed using an explanatory multiple case analysis to explore ‘how’ and ‘why’ type questions within the model and construct relationships. The findings show that the
effects of leadership, people and culture on innovation implementation are mediated by business improvement activities relating to Total Quality Management/Continuous Improvement (TQM/CI) and product and process developments. It is concluded that SMEs have an opportunity to leverage existing quality and process improvement activities to move beyond continuous
improvement outcomes towards effective innovation implementation. The article concludes by suggesting areas suitable for further research.

Objective: To investigate association of scavenger receptor class B, member 1 (SCARB1) genetic variants with serum carotenoid levels of lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z) and macular pigment optical density (MPOD).
Design: A cross-sectional study of healthy adults aged 20 to 70.
Participants: We recruited 302 participants after local advertisement.
Methods: We measured MPOD by customized heterochromatic flicker photometry. Fasting blood samples were taken for serum L and Z measurement by high-performance liquid chromatography and lipoprotein analysis by spectrophotometric assay. Forty-seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across SCARB1 were genotyped using Sequenom technology. Association analyses were performed using PLINK to compare allele and haplotype means, with adjustment for potential confounding and correction for multiple comparisons by permutation testing. Replication analysis was performed in the TwinsUK and Carotenoids in Age-Related Eye Disease Study (CAREDS) cohorts.
Main Outcome Measures: Odds ratios for MPOD area, serum L and Z concentrations associated with genetic variations in SCARB1 and interactions between SCARB1 and gender.
Results: After multiple regression analysis with adjustment for age, body mass index, gender, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, smoking, and dietary L and Z levels, 5 SNPs were significantly associated with serum L concentration and 1 SNP with MPOD (P<0.01). Only the association between rs11057841 and serum L withstood correction for multiple comparisons by permutation testing (P<0.01) and replicated in the TwinsUK cohort (P = 0.014). Independent replication was also observed in the CAREDS cohort with rs10846744 (P = 2×10-4), an SNP in high linkage disequilibrium with rs11057841 (r2 = 0.93). No interactions by gender were found. Haplotype analysis revealed no stronger association than obtained with single SNP analyses.
Conclusions: Our study has identified association between rs11057841 and serum L concentration (24% increase per T allele) in healthy subjects, independent of potential confounding factors. Our data supports further evaluation of the role for SCARB1 in the transport of macular pigment and the possible modulation of age-related macular degeneration risk through combating the effects of oxidative stress within the retina.

Despite the emerging use of diamond-like carbon (DLC) as a coating for medical devices, few studies have examined the resistance of DLC coatings onto medical polymers to both microbial adherence and encrustation. In this study, amorphous DLC of a range of refractive indexes (1.7-1.9) and thicknesses (100-600 nm) was deposited onto polyurethane, a model polymer, and the resistance to microbial adherence (Escherichia coli; clinical isolate) and encrustation examined using in vitro models. In comparison to the native polymer, the advancing and receding contact angles of DLC-coated polyurethane were lower, indicating greater hydrophilic properties. No relationship was observed between refractive index, thickness, and advancing contact angle, as determined using multiple correlation analysis. The resistances of the various DLC-coated polyurethane films to encrustation and microbial adherence were significantly greater than that to polyurethane; however, there were individual differences between the resistances of the various DLC coatings. In general, increasing the refractive index of the coatings (100 nm thickness) decreased the resistance of the films to both hydroxyapatite and struvite encrustation and to microbial adherence. Films of lower thicknesses (100 and 200 nm; of defined refractive index, 1.8), exhibited the greatest resistance to encrustation and to microbial adherence. In conclusion, this study has uniquely illustrated both the microbial antiadherence properties and resistance to urinary encrustation of DLC-coated polyurethane. The resistances to encrustation and microbial adherence were substantial, and in light of this, it is suggested that DLC coatings of low thickness and refractive index show particular promise as coatings of polymeric medical devices. The increasing emphasis on academic entrepreneurship, technology transfer and research commercialisation within UK universities is predicated on basic research being developed by academics into commercial entities such as university spin-off companies or licensing arrangements. However, this process is fraught with challenges and risks, given the degree of uncertainty regarding future returns. In an attempt to minimise such risks, the Proof-of-Concept (PoC) process has been developed within University Science Park Incubators (USIs) to test the technological, business and market potential of embryonic technology. The key or the pivotal stakeholder within the PoC is the Principal Investigator (PI), who is usually the lead academic responsible for the embryonic technology. Within the current literature, there appears to be a lack of research pertaining to the role of the PI in the PoC process. Moreover, Absorptive Capacity (ACAP) has emerged within the literature as a theoretical framework or lens for exploring the development and application of new knowledge and technology, where the USI is the organisation considered in the current study. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the role and influence of the PI in the PoC process within a USI setting using an ACAP perspective. The research involved a multiple case analysis of PoC applications within a UK university USI. The results demonstrate the role of the PI in developing practices and routines within the PoC process. These practices and processes were initially tacit and informal in nature but became more explicit and formal over time so that knowledge was retained within the USI after the PIs had completed the PoC process. © 2010 The Authors. Ambisonics and higher order ambisonics (HOA) technologies aim at reproducing sound field either synthesised or previously recorded with dedicated microphones. Based on a spherical harmonic decomposition, the sound field is more precisely described when higher-order components are used. The presented study evaluated the perceptual and objective localisation accuracy of the sound field encoded with four microphones of order one to four and decoded over a ring of loudspeakers. A perceptual test showed an improvement of the localisation with higher order ambisonic microphones. Reproduced localisation indices were estimated for the four microphones and the respective synthetic systems of order one to four. The perceptual and objective analysis revealed the same conclusions. The localisation accuracy depends on the ambisonic order as well as the source incidence. Furthermore, impairments linked to the microphones were highlighted.

I draw attention to the need for ecologists to take spatial structure into account more seriously in hypothesis testing. If spatial autocorrelation is ignored, as it usually is, then analyses of ecological patterns in terms of environmental factors can produce very misleading results. This is demonstrated using synthetic but realistic spatial patterns with known spatial properties which are subjected to classical correlation and multiple regression analyses. Correlation between an autocorrelated response variable and each of a set of explanatory variables is strongly biased in favour of those explanatory variables that are highly autocorrelated - the expected magnitude of the correlation coefficient increases with autocorrelation even if the spatial patterns are completely independent. Similarly, multiple regression analysis finds highly autocorrelated explanatory variables "significant" much more frequently than it should. The chances of mistakenly identifying a "significant" slope across an autocorrelated pattern is very high if classical regression is used. Consequently, under these circumstances strongly autocorrelated environmental factors reported in the literature as associated with ecological patterns may not actually be significant. It is likely that these factors wrongly described as important constitute a red-shifted subset of the set of potential explanations, and that more spatially discontinuous factors (those with bluer spectra) are actually relatively more important than their present status suggests. There is much that ecologists can do to improve on this situation. I discuss various approaches to the problem of spatial autocorrelation from the literature and present a randomisation test for the association of two spatial patterns which has advantages over currently available methods.

Continuous research endeavors on hard turning (HT), both on machine tools and cutting tools, have made the previously reported daunting limits easily attainable in the modern scenario. This presents an opportunity for a systematic investigation on finding the current attainable limits of hard turning using a CNC turret lathe. Accordingly, this study aims to contribute to the existing literature by providing the latest experimental results of hard turning of AISI 4340 steel (69 HRC) using a CBN cutting tool. An orthogonal array was developed using a set of judiciously chosen cutting parameters. Subsequently, the longitudinal turning trials were carried out in accordance with a well-designed full factorial-based Taguchi matrix. The speculation indeed proved correct as a mirror finished optical quality machined surface (an average surface roughness value of 45 nm) was achieved by the conventional cutting method. Furthermore, Signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio analysis, Analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Multiple regression analysis were carried out on the experimental datasets to assert the dominance of each machining variable in dictating the machined surface roughness and to optimize the machining parameters. One of the key findings was that when feed rate during hard turning approaches very low (about 0.02mm/rev), it could alone be most significant (99.16%) parameter in influencing the machined surface roughness (Ra). This has, however also been shown that low feed rate results in high tool wear, so the selection of machining parameters for carrying out hard turning must be governed by a trade-off between the cost and quality considerations.
