The reductive perturbation technique is employed to investigate the modulational instability of dust-acoustic (DA) waves propagating in a four-component dusty plasma. The dusty plasma consists of both positive- and negative-charge dust grains, characterized by a different mass, temperature and density, in addition to a background of Maxwellian electrons and ions. Relying on a multi-fluid plasma model and employing a multiple scales technique, a nonlinear Schrodinger type equation (NLSE) is obtained for the electric potential amplitude perturbation. The occurrence of localized electrostatic wavepackets is shown, in the form of oscillating structures whose modulated envelope is modelled as a soliton (or multi-soliton) solution of the NLSE. The DA wave characteristics, as well as the associated stability thresholds, are studied analytically and numerically. The relevance of these theoretical results with dusty plasmas observed in cosmic and laboratory environments is analysed in detail, by considering realistic multi-component plasma configurations observed in the polar mesosphere, as well as in laboratory experiments.

Localized plasmon resonances of spherical nanovoid arrays strongly enhance solar cell performance by a factor of 3.5 in external quantum efficiency at plasmonic resonances, and a four-fold enhancement in overall power conversion efficiency. Large area substrates of silver nanovoids are electrochemically templated through self-assembled colloidal spheres and organic solar cells fabricated on top. Our design represents a new class of plasmonic photovoltaic enhancement: that of localized plasmon-enhanced absorption within nanovoid structures. Angularly-resolved spectra demonstrate strong localized Mie plasmon modes within the nanovoids. Theoretical modelling shows varied spatial dependence of light intensity within the void region suggesting a first possible route towards Third Generation plasmonic photovoltaics. A robust multiscale scheme referred to as micro–macro method has been developed for the prediction of localized damage in fiber reinforced composites and implemented in a finite element framework. The micro–macro method is based on the idea of partial homogenization of a structure. In this method, the microstructural details are included in a small region of interest in the structure and the rest is modeled as a homogeneous continuum. The solution to the microstructural fields is then obtained on solving the two different domains, simultaneously. This method accurately predicts local stress fields in stress concentration regions and is computationally efficient as compared with the solution of a full scale microstructural model. This scheme has been applied to obtain localized damage at high and low stress zones of a V-notched rail shear specimen. The prominent damage mechanisms under shear loading, namely, matrix cracking and interfacial debonding, have been modeled using Mohr–Coulomb plasticity and traction separation law, respectively. The average stress at the notch has been found to be 44% higher than the average stresses away from the notch for a 90 N shear load. This stress rise is a direct outcome of the geometry of the notch.

Linear aerospike nozzles are envisaged as a possible device able to improve launcher engine performance. One of the most interesting properties of these nozzles is the possibility of a good integration with the vehicle. Tb improve the knowledge of the flow-field and performance of aerospike nozzles, they are studied numerically, with particular attention to the differences between the basic two-dimensional nozzle, usually considered in the design phase, and the more realistic three-dimensional nozzle. The study considers different plug lengths and ambient pressures to assess the role of the linear plug side truncation on the base pressure behavior. Numerical tests are carried out at supersonic flight Mach number. Copyright © 2005 by M. Geron and R. Paciorri.F. Nasuti, F. Sabetta, E. Martelli.

In this work, the general framework in which fits our investigation is that of modeling the dynamics of dust grains therein dusty plasma (complex plasma) in the presence of electromagnetic fields. The generalized discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation (DCGLE) is thus obtained to model discrete dynamical structure in dusty plasma with Epstein friction. In the collisionless limit, the equation reduces to the modified discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (MDNLSE). The modulational instability phenomenon is studied and we present the criterion of instability in both cases and it is shown that high values of damping extend the instability region. Equations thus obtained highlight the presence of soliton-like excitation in dusty plasma. We studied the generation of soliton in a dusty plasma taking in account the effects of interaction between dust grains and theirs neighbours. Numerical simulations are carried out to show the validity of analytical approach.
