An elegant way to prepare catalytically active microreactors is by applying a coating of zeolite crystals onto a metal microchannel structure. In this study the hydrothermal formation of ZSM-5 zeolitic coatings on AISI 316 stainless steel plates with a microchannel structure has been investigated at different synthesis mixture compositions. The procedures of coating and thermal treatment have also been optimized. Obtaining a uniform thickness of the coating within 0.5 mm wide microchannels requires a careful control of various synthesis variables. The role of these factors and the problems in the synthesis of these zeolitic coatings are discussed. In general, the synthesis is most sensitive to the H2O/Si ratio as well as to the orientation of the plates with respect to the gravity vector. Ratios of H2O/Si=130 and Si/template=13 were found to be optimal for the formation of a zeolitic film with a thickness of one crystal at a temperature of 130 degreesC and a synthesis time of about 35 h. At such conditions, ZSM-5 crystals were formed with a typical size of 1.5 mu mx1.5 mu mx1.0 mum and a very narrow (within 0.2 mum) crystal size distribution. The prepared samples proved to be active in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia. The activity tests have been carried out in a plate-type microreactor. The microreactor shows no mass transfer limitations and a larger SCR reaction rate is observed in comparison with pelletized Ce-ZSM-5 catalysts; (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Consumers trust commercial food production to be safe, and it is important to strive to improve food safety at every level. Several outbreaks of food-borne disease have been caused by Salmonella strains associated with dried food. Currently we do not know the mechanisms used by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium to survive in desiccated environments. The aim of this study was to discover the responses of S. Typhimurium ST4/74 at the transcriptional level to desiccation on a stainless steel surface and to subsequent rehydration. Bacterial cells were dried onto the same steel surfaces used during the production of dry foods, and RNA was recovered for transcriptomic analysis. Subsequently, dried cells were rehydrated and were again used for transcriptomic analysis. A total of 266 genes were differentially expressed under desiccation stress compared with a static broth culture. The osmoprotectant transporters proP, proU, and osmU (STM1491 to STM1494) were highly upregulated by drying. Deletion of any one of these transport systems resulted in a reduction in the long-term viability of S. Typhimurium on a stainless steel food contact surface. The proP gene was critical for survival; proP deletion mutants could not survive desiccation for long periods and were undetectable after 4 weeks. Following rehydration, 138 genes were differentially expressed, with upregulation observed for genes such as proP, proU, and the phosphate transport genes (pstACS). In time, this knowledge should prove valuable for understanding the underlying mechanisms involved in pathogen survival and should lead to improved methods for control to ensure the safety of intermediate-and low-moisture foods. © 2013, American Society for Microbiology.

The wettability and hydrophobicity of super-hydrophobic (SH) meshes is greatly influenced by their topographic structures, chemical composition and coating process. In this study, the properties of copper and stainless steel meshes, coated with super-hydrophobic electrolessly deposited silver were investigated. A new method to test the pressure resistance of super-hydrophobic mesh was applied to avoid any deformation of mesh. Results showed that SH copper mesh and SH stainless steel meshes with the same pore size have almost the same contact angle and the same hydrophobicity. SH copper mesh with a pore size of 122 μm can resist water pressure of 4900 Pa and a decrease of pore size of mesh can increase the pressure resistance of SH copper mesh. The SH copper mesh modified with 0.1 M HS(CH2)10COOH solution in ethanol has a controllable water permeation property by simply adjusting the pH of water solution. SH copper mesh shows super-oleophilicity with organic solvents and so with a water contact angle of 0° and it can be an effective tool for organic solvents/water separation. The separation efficiency of SH copper mesh for separating mixtures of organic solvent and water can be as high as 99.8%.

To understand pitting corrosion in stainless steel is very important, and a recent work showed that the MnS dissolution catalyzed by MnCr2O4{111} is a starting point of pit g. This demonstrates the need to understand the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on MnCr2O4{111}, which is the other half-reaction to complete pitting corrosion. In this study, the adsorption behaviors of all oxygen-containing species on MnCr2O4{111}, which has several possible terminations, are explored via density functional theory calculations. It is found that O-2 adsorbs on MnCr2O4{111) surfaces very strongly. Many possible reactions are investigated and the favored reaction mechanism of ORR is determined. The interactions between O-2 and H2O on the two metal-terminated MriCr(2)O(4){111} are found to be different according to the atomic configurations of the two surfaces. All the calculated results suggest that ORR can readily occur on the MnCr2O4{111} surfaces.

Pitting corrosion of stainless steels, one of the classical problems in materials science and electrochemistry, is generally believed to originate from the local dissolution in MnS inclusions, which are more or less ubiquitous in stainless steels. However, the initial location where MnS dissolution preferentially occurs is known to be unpredictable, which makes pitting corrosion a major concern. In this work we show, at an atomic scale, the initial site where MnS starts to dissolve in the presence of salt water. Using in situ ex-environment transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we found a number of nano-sized octahedral MnCr2O4 crystals (with a spinel structure and a space group of Fd (3) over barm) embedded in the MnS medium, generating local MnCr2O4/MnS nano-galvanic cells. The TEM experiments combined with first-principles calculations clarified that the nano-octahedron, enclosed by eight {1 1 1} facets with metal terminations, is "malignant", and this acts as the reactive site and catalyses the dissolution of MnS. This work not only uncovers the origin of MnS dissolution in stainless steels, but also presents an atomic-scale evolution in a material's failure which may occur in a wide range of engineering alloys and biomedical instruments serving in wet environments. Spatially resolved measurements of the atomic oxygen densities close to a sample surface in a dual mode (capacitive/inductive) rf plasma are used to measure the atomic oxygen surface loss coefficient beta on stainless steel and aluminum substrates, silicon and silicon dioxide wafers, and on polypropylene samples. beta is found to be particularly sensitive to the gas pressure for both operating modes. It is concluded that this is due to the effect of changing atom and ion flux to the surface. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Comparisons of 2D fluid simulations with experimental measurements of Ar/Cl-2 plasmas in a low-pressure inductively coupled reactor are reported. Simulations show that the wall recombination coefficient of Cl atom (gamma) is a crucial parameter of the model and that neutral densities are very sensitive to its variations. The best agreement between model and experiment is obtained for gamma = 0.02, which is much lower than the value predicted for stainless steel walls (gamma = 0.6). This is consistent with reactor wall contaminations classically observed in such discharges. The electron density, negative ion fraction and Cl atom density have been investigated under various conditions of chlorine and argon concentrations, gas pressure and applied rf input power. The plasma electronegativity decreases with rf power and increases with chlorine concentration. At high pressure, the power absorption and distribution of charged particles become more localized below the quartz window. Although the experimental trends are well reproduced by the simulations, the calculated charged particle densities are systematically overestimated by a factor of 3-5. The reasons for this discrepancy are discussed in the paper.

Currently available synthetic bone substitutes perform poorly compared to autograft. It is hoped that by adding osteogenic growth factors to the materials, new bone formation could be increased and the clinical outcome improved. In this study, IGF-1, bFGF and TGFbeta1, alone and in combination, were absorbed onto a carrier of P-tricalcium phosphate (PTCP) and implanted into a defect around a hydroxyapatite-coated, stainless steel implant in the proximal tibia of rat in a model of revision arthroplasty. Animals were sacrificed at 6 and 26 weeks for routine histology and histomorphometry and mechanical push out tests. The results show that only bFGF had a significant effect on ceramic resorption. The groups that received bFGF and bFGF in combination with TGFbeta1 had smaller and fewer betaTCP particles remaining in the defect at 6 and 26 weeks. No growth factor combination significantly enhanced new bone formation or the mechanical strength of the implant. These results indicate that, of the growth factors tested, only bFGF had any beneficial effect on the host response to the implant, perhaps by delaying osteoblast differentiation and thereby prolonging osteoclast access to the ceramic. This study examined the mechanical/textural, viscoeiastic and mucoadhesive properties of a range of aqueous gels composed of either hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) or sodium carboxymethylcellulose (Na CMC). The mechanical/textural properties of each formulation were determined using texture profile analysis. The viscoelastic properties of each formulation were examined over a defined frequency range (0.01-1.0 Hz) using oscillatory rheometry in conjunction with stainless steel parallel plate geometry. The mucoadhesive properties of the gels were evaluated by measuring the tensile force required to overcome the gel/mucin adhesive interaction. Both gel hardness and compressibility, properties that affect the ease of product removal from a container and spreadability, increased as a function of increasing polymer concentrations. This is attributed to the effects of HEC and Na CMC on gel viscosity. Gel adhesiveness, a property related to bioadhesion, also increased as a function of polymer concentration and is attributed to the reported adhesive nature of these polymers. Increasing frequency of oscillation increased the storage and loss moduli yet decreased bath the dynamic viscosity of each gel type and also the loss tangent of HEC (but not Na CMC) gels. Therefore, following exposure to the range of oscillatory stresses that may be expected in vivo, HEC gels will be more susceptible than Na CMC gels to alterations in these rheological properties. Consequently, it would be expected that the clinical performance of HEC gels will be modified to a greater extent than Na CMC gels. In general, HEC gels exhibited a greater elastic nature than Na CMC gels over the frequency range employed for oscillation The storage and loss moduli and dynamic viscosity of both gel types increased, yet the loss tangent of both gel types decreased as a function of increasing polymer concentration. Gel mucoadhesive strength was dependent on both the time of contact of the formulation with mucin and also on polymer concentration. In conclusion, this study has characterised a number of gels containing either HEC or Na CMC in terms of their mechanical/textural, viscoelastic and mucoadhesive properties. Due to its relevance to the clinical performance, it is suggested that the information derived from these methods may be usefully combined to provide a more rational basis for the selection of polymers and their formulation as topical drug delivery systems.
