Shape corrections to the standard approximate Kohn-Sham exchange-correlation (xc) potentials are considered with the aim to improve the excitation energies (especially for higher excitations) calculated with time-dependent density functional perturbation theory. A scheme of gradient-regulated connection (GRAC) of inner to outer parts of a model potential is developed. Asymptotic corrections based either on the potential of Fermi and Amaldi or van Leeuwen and Baerends (LB) are seamlessly connected to the (shifted) xc potential of Becke and Perdew (BP) with the GRAC procedure, and are employed to calculate the vertical excitation energies of the prototype molecules N-2, CO, CH2O, C2H4, C5NH5, C6H6, Li-2, Na-2, K-2. The results are compared with those of the alternative interpolation scheme of Tozer and Handy as well as with the results of the potential obtained with the statistical averaging of (model) orbital potentials. Various asymptotically corrected potentials produce high quality excitation energies, which in quite a few cases approach the benchmark accuracy of 0.1 eV for the electronic spectra. Based on these results, the potential BP-GRAC-LB is proposed for molecular response calculations, which is a smooth potential and a genuine "local" density functional with an analytical representation. We have carried out extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations for possible redox states of the active center in Fe-only hydrogenases. The active center is modeled by [(H(CH(3))S)(CO)(CN(-))Fe(p)(mu-DTN)(mu-CO)Fe(d)(CO)(CN(-))(L)](z) (z is the net charge in the complex; Fe(p)= the proximal Fe, Fe(d) = the distal Fe, DTN = (-SCH(2)NHCH(2)S-), L is the ligand that bonds with the Fed at the trans position to the bridging CO). Structures of possible redox states are optimized, and CO stretching frequencies are calculated. By a detailed comparison of all the calculated structures and the vibrational frequencies with the available experimental data, we find that (i) the fully oxidized, inactive state is an Fe(II)-Fe(II) state with a hydroxyl (OH(-)) group bonded at the Fe(d), (ii) the oxidized, active state is an Fe(II)-Fe(l) complex which is consistent with the assignment of Cao and Hall (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2001, 123, 3734), and (iii) the fully reduced state is a mixture with the major component being a protonated Fe(l)-Fe(l) complex and the other component being its self-arranged form, Fe(II)-Fe(II) hydride, Our calculations also show that the exogenous CO can strongly bond with the Fe(II)-Fe(l) species, but cannot bond with the Fe(l)-Fe(l) complex. This result is consistent with experiments that CO tends to inhibit the oxidized, active state, but not the fully reduced state. The electronic structures of all the redox states have been analyzed. It is found that a frontier orbital which is a mixing state between the e(g) of Fe and the 2pi of the bridging CO plays a key role concerning the reactivity of Fe-only hydrogenases: (1) it is unoccupied in the fully oxidized, inactive state, half-occupied in the oxidized, active state, and fully occupied in the fully reduced state; (ii) the e(g)-2pi orbital is a bonding state, and this is the key reason for stability of the low oxidation states, such as Fe(l)-Fe(l) complexes; and (iii) in the e(g)-2pi orbital more charge accumulates between the bridging CO and the Fe(d) than between the bridging CO and the Fe(p), and the occupation increase in this orbital will enhance the bonding between the bridging CO and the Fe(d), leading to the bridging-CO shift toward the Fe(d).

The mechanism of the dehydrogenation of tetrahydrocarbazole to carbazole over palladium has been examined for the first time. By use of a combination of deuterium exchange experiments and density functional theory calculations, a detailed reaction profile for the aromatization of tetrahydrocarbazole has been identified and validated by experiment. As with many dehydrogenation reactions, the initial hydrogen abstraction is found to have the highest reaction barrier. Tetrahydrocarbazole has four hydrogens which can, in principle, be cleaved initially; however, the theory and experiment show that the reaction is dominated by the cleavage of the carbon hydrogens at the carbon atoms in positions 1 and 4. The two pathways originating from these two C-H bond cleavage processes are found to have similar reaction energy profiles and both contribute to the overall reaction.

The C-H activation on metal oxides is a fundamental process in chemistry. In this paper, we report a density functional theory study on the process of the C-H activation of CH4 on Pd(111), Pt(111), Ru(0001), Tc(0001), Cu(111), PdO(001), PdO(110), and PdO(100). A linear relationship between the C-H activation barrier and the chemisorption in the dissociation final state on the metal surfaces is obtained, which is consistent with the work in the literature. However, the relationship is poor on the metal oxide surfaces. Instead, a strong linear correlation between the barrier and the lattice O-H bond strength is found on the oxides. The new linear relationship is analyzed and the physical origin is identified. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Boron-modified Pd catalysts have shown excellent performance for the selective hydrogenation of alkynes experimentally. In the current work, we investigated the hydrogenation of acetylene on boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces, utilizing density functional theory calculations. The activity of acetylene hydrogenation has been studied by estimating the effective barrier of the whole process. The selectivity of ethylene formation is investigated from a comparison between the desorption and the hydrogenation of ethylene as well as comparison between the ethylene and the 1,3-butadiene formation. Formation of subsurface carbon and hydrogen on both boron-modified Pd(111) and Pd(211) surfaces has also been evaluated, since these have been reported to affect both the activity and the selectivity of acetylene hydrogenation to produce ethylene on Pd surfaces. Our results provide some important insights into the Pd B catalysts for selective hydrogenation of acetylene and also for more complex hydrogenation systems, such as stereoselective hydrogenation of longer chain alkynes and selective hydrogenation of vegetable oil.

Metal exchanged CHA-type (SAPO-34 and SSZ-13) zeolites are promising catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by NH3. However, the understanding of the process at the molecular level is still limited, which hinders the identification of its mechanism and the design of more efficient zeolite catalysts. In this work, modelling the reaction over Cu-SAPO-34, a periodic density functional theory (DFT) study of NH3-SCR was performed using hybrid functional with the consideration of van der Waals (vdW) interactions. A mechanism with a low N–N coupling barrier is proposed to account for the activation of NO. The redox cycle of Cu2+ and Cu+, which is crucial for the SCR process, is identified with detailed analyses. Besides, the decomposition of NH2NO is shown to readily occur on the Brønsted acid site by a hydrogen push-pull mechanism, confirming the collective efforts of Brønsted acid and Lewis acid (Cu2+) sites. The special electronic and structural properties of Cu-SAPO-34 are demonstrated to play an essential role the reaction, which may have a general implication on the understanding of zeolite catalysis.

Since the discovery of a series of Au-based catalysts by Haruta et al. considerable progress has been made in understanding the active role of Au in CO oxidation catalysis. This review provides a summary of recent theoretical work performed in this field; in particular it addresses DFT studies of CO oxidation catalysis over free and supported gold nanoparticles. Several properties of the Au particles have been found to contribute to their unique catalytic activity. Of these properties, the low-coordination state of the Au atoms is arguably the most pertinent, although other properties of the Au cluster atoms, such as electronic charge, cannot be ignored. The current consensuses regarding the mechanism for CO oxidation over Au-based catalysts is also discussed. Finally, water-enhanced catalysis of CO oxidation on Au clusters is summarized.

The O removal through water formation is an important process in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In this study, both steps in water formation (O + H --> OH, OH + H --> H2O) are studied on the stepped Co(0001) at high coverages using density functional theory. We find the following. (i) In both O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, two transition states (TSs) were located for the O hydrogenation: in one TS, both O and H are on the same terrace, and in the other they are at the interface between the step edge and the terrace below. (ii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, the O hydrogenation at the interface is easier (E-a = 0.32 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.10 eV in the O-OH system) than that on the same terrace (E-a = 1.49 eV in the O-O system, E-a = 1.80 eV in the O-OH system). (iii) In both the O-O and O-OH co-adsorption systems, only one TS for the OH hydrogenation was located, in which both OH and H are on the same terrace. (iv) Compared to the OH hydrogenation in the O-OH system (E-a = 1.46 eV), the reaction in the OH-OH system (E-a = 0.64 eV) is much easier. The barrier differences and the water effect on the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis are discussed. A possible route with low barriers for water formation is proposed.

Gold-based catalysts have been of intense interests in recent years, being regarded as a new generation of catalysts due to their unusually high catalytic performance. For example, CO oxidation on Au/TiO2 has been found to occur at a temperature as low as 200 K. Despite extensive studies in the field, the microscopic mechanism of CO oxidation on Au-based catalysts remains controversial. Aiming to provide insight into the catalytic roles of Au, we have performed extensive density functional theory calculations for the elementary steps in CO oxidation on Au surfaces. O atom adsorption, CO adsorption, O-2 dissociation, and CO oxidation on a series of Au surfaces, including flat surfaces, defects and small clusters, have been investigated in detail. Many transition states involved are located, and the lowest energy pathways are determined. We find the following: (i) the most stable site for O atom on Au is the bridge site of step edge, not a kink site; (ii) O-2 dissociation on Au (O-2-->20(ad)) is hindered by high barriers with the lowest barrier being 0.93 eV on a step edge; (iii) CO can react with atomic O with a substantially lower barrier, 0.25 eV, on Au steps where CO can adsorb; (iv) CO can react with molecular O-2 on Au steps with a low barrier of 0.46 eV, which features an unsymmetrical four-center intermediate state (O-O-CO); and (v) O-2 can adsorb on the interface of Au/TiO2 with a reasonable chemisorption energy. On the basis of our calculations, we suggest that (i) O-2 dissociation on Au surfaces including particles cannot occur at low temperatures; (ii) CO oxidation on Au/inactive-materials occurs on Au steps via a two-step mechanism: CO+O-2-->CO2+O, and CO+O-->CO2; and (iii) CO oxidation on Au/active-materials also follows the two-step mechanism with reactions occurring at the interface.

Catalytic formation of N2O and NO2 were studied employing density functional theory with generalized gradient approximations, in order to investigate the microscopic reaction pathways of these catalytic processes on a Pt(111) surface. Transition states and reaction barriers for the addition of chemisorbed N or chemisorbed O to NO(ads) producing N2O and NO2, respectively, were calculated. The N2O transition state involves bond formation across the hcp hollow site with an associated reaction barrier of 1.78 eV. NO2 formation favors a fcc hollow site transition state with a barrier of 1.52 eV. The mechanisms for both reactions are compared to CO oxidation on the same surface. The activation of the chemisorbed NO and the chemisorbed N or O from the energetically stable initial state to the transition state are both significant contributors to the overall reaction barrier E-a, in contrast to CO oxidation in which the activation of the O-(ads) is much greater than CO(ads) activation. To shed light on stepwise addition reactions in ammonia synthesis, density functional theory calculations are carried out to investigate NHx (x = 1-3) formation on Ru(0001). The reactions on a flat surface are first examined. Transition states and reaction barriers are determined. It is found that the reaction barriers for these stepwise addition reactions are rather high. For example, the barrier for NH hydrogenation is calculated to be 1.28 eV, which is comparable with that of N-2 dissociation. One of the stepwise addition reactions, NH + H --> NH2, on a stepped surface is also considered. Interestingly, the reaction barrier is found to be significantly lower than that on the flat surface, but is considerably higher than that of N-2 dissociation on the same stepped surface. In addition, the coverage effect on the reaction energetics is also addressed. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Density functional theory with gradient corrections has been employed to study the reaction pathways and the reaction energetics for the transformations of CH4 to C and H on a Pd(100) surface. On examination of transition state structures identified in each elementary reaction, a clear relationship between the valencies of the CHx fragments and the locations of the transition states emerges. The higher the valency of the CHx fragment, the higher the coordination number of the CHx with the surface atoms. The calculated reaction energetics are in good agreement with the experiments. In addition, calculation results are also used to illustrate an interesting issue concerning the CH3 stability on Pd surfaces. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Alloying metals is often used as an effective way to enhance the reactivity of surfaces. Aiming to shed light on the effect of alloying on reaction mechanisms, we carry out a comparative study of CO oxidation on Cu3Pt(111), Pt(111), and Cu(111) by means of density functional theory calculations. Alloying effects on the bonding sites and bonding energies of adsorbates, and the reaction pathways are investigated. It is shown that CO preferentially adsorbs on an atop site of Pt and O preferentially adsorbs on a fcc hollow site of three Cu atoms on Cu3Pt(111). It is also found that the adsorption energies of CO (or O-a) decreases on Pt (or Cu) on the alloy surface with respect to those on pure metals. More importantly, having identified the transition states for CO oxidation on those three surfaces, we found an interesting trend for the reaction barrier on the three surfaces. Similar to the adsorption energies, the reaction barrier on Cu3Pt possesses an intermediate value of those on pure Pt and Cu metals. The physical origin of these results has been analyzed in detail. Density functional theory (DFT) has been used to determine reaction pathways for several reactions taking place on Pt(111) and Cu(111) surfaces. On Pt(111), the reactions of C+O and C+N were studied, and on Cu(111) we investigated the reaction of C+H. The structures of the transition states accessed in each reaction are similar. An equivalent distance separates the reactants with the first located at a three-fold hollow site and the second close to a bridge site. Previous DFT studies have, in fact, often identified transition states of this type and in every case it is the reactant with the weaker chemisorption energy that is located close to the bridge site. An explanation as to why this is so is provided. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Density functional theory has been used to investigate the surface relaxation of Cu2O(100) and the adsorption of NO. The calculations indicate the formation of surface copper dimers on relaxation coupled with a large contraction of the spacing between the first and second layers. Local density of states for atoms in the top three layers shows that the third layer copper atoms have the greatest change in bonding character. Adsorption energies have been calculated for the N-down and O-down adsorption of NO on the Cu2O(100) surface. These indicate that N-down adsorption is favoured and that in this case NO-lattice oxygen interactions dominate the adsorbate structure. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
