Energy levels and oscillator strengths (transition probabilities) have been calculated for transitions among 46 fine-structure levels of the (1s(2)) 2s(2) 2p(2), 2s2p(3),2p(4), 2s(2)2p3s, 2s(2) 2p3p and 2s(2)2p3d configurations of C-like K XIV, Sc XVI, Ti XVII, V XVIII, Cr XIX and Mn XX using the GRASP code. Configuration interaction and relativistic effects have been included while generating the wavefunctions. Calculated values of energy levels agree within 3% with the experimentally compiled results, and the length and velocity forms of oscillator strengths agree within 20% for a majority of allowed transitions.

Voltammetric studies of the reduction of oxygen in the room temperature ionic liquid [C(4)dmim][N(Tf)(2)] have revealed a significant positive shift in the back peak potential, relative to that expected for a simple electron transfer. This shift is thought to be due to the strong association of the electrogenerated superoxide anion with the solvent cation. In this work we quantitatively simulate the microdisc electrode voltammetry using a model based upon a one-electron reduction followed by a reversible chemical step, involving the formation of the [C(4)dmim](+)center dot center dot center dot O-2(center dot-) ion-pair, and in doing so we extract a set of parameters completely describing the system. We have simulated the voltammetry in the absence of a following chemical step and have shown that it is impossible to simultaneously fit both the forward and reverse peaks. To further support the parameters extracted from fitting the experimental voltammetry, we have used these parameters to independently simulate the double step chronoamperometric response and found excellent agreement. The parameters used to describe the association of the O-2(center dot-) with the [C(4)dmim](+) were k(f) = 1.4 x 10(3) s(-1) for the first-order rate constant and K-eq = 25 for the equilibrium constant.

Transition metal catalyzed bond formation is a fundamental process in catalysis and is of general interest throughout chemistry. To date, however, the knowledge of association reactions is rather limited, relative to what is known about dissociative processes. For example, surprisingly little is known about how the bond-forming ability of a metal, in general, varies across the Periodic Table. In particular, the effect of reactant valency on such trends is poorly understood. Herein, the authors examine these key issues by using density functional theory calculations to study CO and CN formations over the 4d metals. The calculations reveal that the chemistries differ in a fundamental way. In the case of CO formation, the reaction enthalpies span a much greater range than those of CN formation. Moreover, CO formation is found to be kinetically sensitive to the metal; here the reaction barriers (E-a) are found to be influenced by the reaction enthalpy. CN formation, conversely, is found to be relatively kinetically insensitive to the metal, and there is no correlation found between the reaction barriers and the reaction enthalpy. Analysis has shown that at the final adsorbed state, the interaction between N and the surface is relatively greater than that of O. Furthermore, in comparison with O, relatively less bonding between the surface and N is observed to be lost during transition state formation. These greater interactions between N and the surface, which can be related to the larger valency of N, are found to be responsible for the relatively smaller enthalpy range and limited variation in E-a for CN formation. In this work we characterise the C*-algebras $\mathcal{A}$ generated by projections with the property that every pair of projections in $\mathcal{A}$ has positive angle, as certain extensions of abelian algebras by algebras of compact operators. We show that this property is equivalent to a lattice theoretic property of projections and also to the property that the set of finite dimensional *-subalgebras of $\mathcal{A}$ is directed.

In this work we examine, for the first time, the molar conductivity behavior of the deeply supercooled room temperature ionic liquid [C4mim][NTf2] in the temperature, pressure and volume thermodynamic space in terms of density scaling (TVγ)−1 combined with the equation of state (EOS). The exponent γσ determined from the Avramov model analysis is compared with the coefficient obtained from the viscosity studies carried out at moderate temperatures. Therefore, the experimental results presented herein provide the answer to the long-standing question regarding the validity of thermodynamic scaling of ionic liquids over a wide temperature range, i.e. from the normal liquid state to the glass transition point. Finally, we investigate the relationship between the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of [C4mim][NTf2] represented by scaling exponent γ and Grüneisen constant γG, respectively.

We report energy levels, radiative rates (A-values) and lifetimes for the astrophysically important Be-like ion C III. For the calculations, 166 levels belonging to the n ≤ 5 configurations are considered and the GRASP (General-purpose Relativistic Atomic Structure Package) is adopted. Einstein A-coefficients are provided for all E1, E2, M1 and M2 transitions, while lifetimes are compared with available measurements as well as theoretical results, and no large discrepancies noted. Our energy levels are assessed to be accurate to better than 1 per cent for a majority of levels, and A-values to better than 20 per cent for most transitions. Collision strengths are also calculated, for which the Dirac Atomic R-matrix Code (DARC) is used. A wide energy range, up to 21 Ryd, is considered and resonances resolved in a fine energy mesh in the thresholds region. The collision strengths are subsequently averaged over a Maxwellian velocity distribution to determine effective collision strengths up to a temperature of 8.0 ×10[5]K, sufficient for most astrophysical applications. Our data are compared with the recent R-matrix calculations of Fernández-Menchero et al., and significant differences (up to over an order of magnitude) are noted for several transitions over the complete temperature range of the results.

We have performed an R-matrix with pseudo-states (RMPS) calculation of electron-impact excitation in C2+.Collision strengths and effective collision strengths were determined for excitation between the lowest 24 terms, including all those arising from the 2s3l and 2s4l configurations. In the RMPS calculation, 238 terms (90 spectroscopic and 148 pseudo-state) were employed in the close-coupling (CC) expansion of the target. In order to investigate the significance of coupling to the target continuum and highly excited bound states, we compare the RMPS results with those from an R-matrix calculation that incorporated all 238 terms in the configuration- interaction expansion, but only the lowest 44 spectroscopic terms in the CC expansion. We also compare our effective collision strengths with those from an earlier 12-state R-matrix calculation (Berrington et al 1989 J. Phys. B: At.Mol. Opt. Phys. 22 665). The RMPS calculation was extremely large, involving (N +1)-electron Hamiltonian matrices of dimension up to 36 085, and required the use of our recently completed suite of parallel R-matrix programs. The full set of effective collision strengths fromourRMPS calculation is available at theOakRidgeNationalLaboratoryControlledFusion Atomic Data Center web site. 1.

The electrochemical oxidation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide, [C(4)mim]I, has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry at a platinum microelectrode at varying concentrations in the RTIL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C(4)mim][NTf2]. Two oxidation peaks were observed. The first peak is assigned to the oxidation of iodide to triiodide, in an overall two-electron process: 3I(-)- 2e(-) -> I-3(-). At higher potentials, the electrogenerated triiodide oxidizes to iodine, in an overall one-electron process: I-3(-) - e(-) -> 3/2I(2). An average diffusion coefficient, D, for I- of 1.55 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) was obtained. A digital simulation program was used to simulate the voltammetric response, and kinetic parameters were successfully extracted. The parameters deduced from the simulation include D for I-, I-3(-), and I-2 and K-eq,K-2, the equilibrium constant for the reaction of iodide and iodine to form triiodide. Values for these parameters are of the same order as those previously published for the oxidation of Br- in the same RTIL [Allen et al. J. Electroanal. Chem. 2005, 575, 311]. Next, the cyclic voltammetry of five different inorganic iodide salts was studied by dissolving small amounts of the solid in [C(4)mim][NTf2]. Similar oxidation peaks were observed, revealing diffusion coefficients of ca. 0.55, 1.14, 1.23, 1.44, and 1.33 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) and solubilities of 714, 246, 54, 83, and 36 mM for LiI, NaI, KI, RbI, and CsI, respectively. The slightly smaller diffusion coefficients for the XI salts (compared to [C(4)mim]I) may indicate that I- is ion-paired with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ in the RTIL medium.
