Thermally stimulated current (TSC) spectroscopy is attracting increasing attention as a means of materials characterization, particularly in terms of measuring slow relaxation processes in solid samples. However, wider use of the technique within the pharmaceutical field has been inhibited by difficulties associated with the interpretation of TSC data, particularly in terms of deconvoluting dipolar relaxation processes from charge distribution phenomena. Here, we present evidence that space charge and electrode contact effects may play a significant role in the generation of peaks that have thus far proved difficult to interpret. We also introduce the use of a stabilization temperature in order to control the space charge magnitude. We have studied amorphous indometacin as a model drug compound and have varied the measurement parameters (stabilization and polarization temperatures), interpreting the changes in spectral composition in terms of charge redistribution processes. More specifically, we suggested that charge drift and diffusion processes, charge injection from the electrodes and high activation energy charge redistribution processes may all contribute to the appearance of shoulders and 'spurious' peaks. We present recommendations for eliminating or reducing these effects that may allow more confident interpretation of TSC data.

The effects of a constant uniform magnetic field on thermoelectric currents during dendritic solidification were investigated using a 2-dimensional enthalpy based numerical model. Using an approximation of the dendrite growing in free space it was found that the resulting Lorentz force generates a circulating flow influencing the solidification pattern. As the magnetic field strength increases it was found that secondary growth on the clockwise side of the primary arm of the dendrite was encouraged, while the anticlockwise side is suppressed due to a reduction in local free energy. The preferred direction of growth rotated in the clockwise sense under an anti-clockwise flow for both the binary alloy and pure material. The tip velociy is significantly increased compared to growth in stagnant flow. This is due to a small recirculation that follows the tip of the dendrite; bringing in colder liquid and lower concentrations of solute. The recirculation being not normally incident on the tip is most likely the cause for the rotation. Grain growth consisting of multiple seeds with the same anisotropy growing in the same plane, gives a competition to release latent heat resulting in stunted growth. The initial growth for each dendrite is very similar to the single seed cases indicating that dendrites must become before the thermoelectric interactions are significant.

Zaha Hadid's Kartal Pendik Masterplan (2006) for a new city centre on the east bank of Istanbul proposes the redevelopment of an abandoned industrial site located in a crucial infrastructural node between Europe and Asia as a connecting system between the neighbouring areas of Kartal in the west and Pendik in the east. The project is organised on what its architects call a soft grid, a flexible and adaptable grid that allows it to articulate connections and differences of form, density and use within the same spatial structure [1]. Its final overall design constitutes only one of the many possible configurations that the project may take in response to the demands of the different areas included in the masterplan, and is produced from a script that is able to generate both built volumes and open spaces, skyscrapers as well as parks. The soft grid in fact produces a ‘becoming’ rather than a finite and definitive form: its surface space does not look like a grid, but is derived from a grid operation which is best explained by the project presentation in video animation. The grid here is a process of ‘gridding’, enacted according to ancient choreographed linear movements of measuring, defining, adjusting, reconnecting spaces through an articulated surface rather than superimposed on an ignored given like an indifferent colonising carpet.
