The first stages in the development of a new design tool, to be used by coastal engineers to improve the efficiency, analysis, design, management and operation of a wide range of coastal and harbour structures, are described. The tool is based on a two-dimensional numerical model, NEWMOTICS-2D, using the volume of fluid (VOF) method, which permits the rapid calculation of wave hydrodynamics at impermeable natural and man-made structures. The critical hydrodynamic flow processes and forces are identified together with the equations that describe these key processes. The different possible numerical approaches for the solution of these equations, and the types of numerical models currently available, are examined and assessed. Preliminary tests of the model, using comparisons with results from a series of hydraulic model test cases, are described. The results of these tests demonstrate that the VOF approach is particularly appropriate for the simulation of the dynamics of waves at coastal structures because of its flexibility in representing the complex free surfaces encountered during wave impact and breaking. The further programme of work, required to develop the existing model into a tool for use in routine engineering design, is outlined.

CFD modelling of 'real-life' processes often requires solutions in complex three dimensional geometries, which can often result in meshes where aspects of it are badly distorted. Cell-centred finite volume methods, typical of most commercial CFD tools, are computationally efficient, but can lead to convergence problems on meshes which feature cells with high non-orthogonal shapes. The vertex-based finite volume method handles distorted meshes with relative ease, but is computationally expensive. A combined vertex-based - cell-centred (VB-CC) technique, detailed in this paper, allows solutions on distorted meshes that defeat purely cell-centred physical models to be employed in the solution of other transported quantities. The VB-CC method is validated with benchmark solutions for thermally driven flow and turbulent flow. An early application of this hybrid technique is to three-dimensional flow over an aircraft wing, although it is planned to use it in a wide variety of processing applications in the future.

A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [pNIPAM]-based homo-polymer and co-polymer microgel particles were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerisation. The co-monomers were acrylic acid. 4-vinylpyridine. butyl acrylate, 4-vinylbiphenyl and vinyl laurate. Co-monomers were added at a concentration of 10% (w/w) relative to the base monomer pNIPAM for the preparation of each co-polymer microgel. The co-monomers chosen vary by their organic chain length, polarity and pH sensitivity, as these should influence how the particles behave in aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. The effect of adding different types of co-monomer into the microgel structure was investigated with respect to their dispersibility in different solvents. These microgel particles have shown useful application in the removal of water from biodiesel prepared from rape seed. Karl Fischer experiments showed that microgel particles can be used to reduce the water content in biodiesel to an acceptable level for incorporation into internal combustion engines. Artificial neural network (ANN) models for water loss (WL) and solid gain (SG) were evaluated as potential alternative to multiple linear regression (MLR) for osmotic dehydration of apple, banana and potato. The radial basis function (RBF) network with a Gaussian function was used in this study. The RBF employed the orthogonal least square learning method. When predictions of experimental data from MLR and ANN were compared, an agreement was found for ANN models than MLR models for SG than WL. The regression coefficient for determination (R2) for SG in MLR models was 0.31, and for ANN was 0.91. The R2 in MLR for WL was 0.89, whereas ANN was 0.84.Osmotic dehydration experiments found that the amount of WL and SG occurred in the following descending order: Golden Delicious apple > Cox apple > potato > banana. The effect of temperature and concentration of osmotic solution on WL and SG of the plant materials followed a descending order as: 55 > 40 > 32.2C and 70 > 60 > 50 > 40%, respectively.

The water sorption and desorption behaviour of three commercial polyacid-modified composite resins used in clinical dentistry have been studied in detail. Cured specimens of each material were subjected to two successive water uptake cycles in an atmosphere of 93% relative humidity, with one intervening desorption cycle in a desiccating atmosphere over concentrated sulfuric acid. Specimens were found to absorb and desorb water according Fick's law until Mt/M(infinity) values of approximately 0.5. Diffusion rates for uptake varied between cycles, ranging from 2.37-4.53 x 10(-9 )cm(2) s(-1) for 1st cycle to 0.85-2.72 x 10(-8 )cm(2 )s(-1) for 2nd cycle. Desorption rates were similar to those for 2nd cycle sorption, and ranged from 0.86 to 5.47 x 10(-8 )cm(2 )s(-1). Equilibration times for 1st cycle water uptake were greater than for 2nd cycle sorption and for desorption and overall the behaviour of polyacid-modified composites in a high humidity atmosphere was similar to that of conventional composites in water. It is concluded that the hydrophilic components of the former do not bring about an enhanced rate of water transport.

The X-ray crystal structures of two lamotrigine derivatives (I) 2-methyl, 3-amino, 5-imino-6-(2, 3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine, C10H9Cl2N5, as the hemi hydrate and (II) 2-methyl,3,5-diamino-6-(2,3-dichlorophenyl)-1,2,4-triazine, C10H10Cl2N5, as the isethionate-water solvate, have been carried out at liquid nitrogen temperature. A detailed comparison of the two structures is given. Both are monoclinic and centrosymmetric, with (I) in space group C2/c, and (II) in space group P2(1)/n. For (I) the unit cell dimensions are a = 19.5466(10), b = 7.5483(4), c = 15.7861(8) angstrom, beta = 91.458(3)degrees, volume = 2328.4(2) angstrom(3), Z = 8, density = 1.590 Mg/m(3); for (II). For (II) the unit cell dimensions are a = 6.0566(2), b = 11.0084(4) c = 23.9973(9) angstrom, beta = 92.587(3)degrees, volume = 1598.35(10) angstrom(3), Z = 4, density = 1.597 Mg/m(3). For (I) final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] are R1 = 0.0356, wR2 = 0.0782 and R indices (all data) are R1 = 0.0424, wR2 = 0.0817. For (II) final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] are R1 = 0.0380, wR2 = 0.0871 and R indices (all data) R1 = 0.0558, wR2 = 0.0949. Both structures have a molecule of water of crystallization and (II) also includes a solvated CH3SO3. Comparisons are made between the two structures. Structure (I) is very unusual in having a = NH group at position C5' on the triazine ring. No other examples of this particular substitution, which is usually -NH2, have been reported.

In this paper, a runback water and ice prediction model is extended to anti-icing and thermal de-icing situations. The resulting coupled equations that govern thin-film flow, ice accretion, and heat conduction in the multilayered system substrate-ice-water are solved using an explicit finite volume approach. The procedure is implemented in the three-dimensional icing code ICECREMO2, and both structured and unstructured grids can be considered. Numerical results are presented to compare the present code simulations to some data provided by other ice prediction codes and to show the capabilities of the present numerical tool.
