This paper presents both modelling and experimental test data to characterise the performance of four non-destructive tests. The focus is on determining the presence and rough magnitude of thermal fatigue cracks within the solder joints for a surface mount resistor on a strip of FR4 PCB. The tests all operate by applying mechanical loads to the PCB and monitoring the strain response at the top of the resistor. The modelling results show that of the four tests investigated, three are sensitive to the presence of a crack in the joint and its magnitude. Hence these tests show promise in being able to detect cracking caused by accelerated testing. The experimental data supports these results although more validation is required.

Anisotropic conductive films (ACFs) are widely used in the electronic packaging industries because of their fine pitch potential and the assembly process is simpler compared to the soldering process. However, there are still unsolved issues in the volume productions using ACFs. The main reason is that the effects of many factors on the interconnects are not well understood. This work focuses on the performance of ACF-bonded chip-on-flex assemblies subjected to a range of thermal cycling test conditions. Both experimental and three-dimensional finite element computer modelling methods are used. It has been revealed that greater temperature ranges and longer dwell-times give rise to higher stresses in the ACF interconnects. Higher stresses are concentrated along the edges of the chip-ACF interfaces. In the experiments, the results show that higher temperature ranges and prolonged dwell times increase contact resistance values. Close examination of the microstructures along the bond-line through the scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that cyclic thermal loads disjoint the conductive particles from the bump of the chip and/or pad of the substrate and this is thought to be related to the increase of the contact resistance value and the failure of the ACF joints.

Lead-free solder paste printing process accounts for majority of the assembly defects in the electronic manufacturing industry. The study investigates rheological behaviour and stencil printing performance of the lead-free solder pastes (Sn/Ag/Cu). Oscillatory stress sweep test was carried out to study the visco-elastic behaviour of the lead-free solder pastes. The visco-elastic behaviour of the paste encompasses solid and liquid characteristic of the paste, which could be used to study the flow behaviour experienced by the pastes during the stencil printing process. From this study, it was found that the solid characteristics (G0) is higher than the liquid characteristic (G0 0) for the pastes material. In addition, the results from the study showed that the solder paste with a large G0 = G0 0 has a higher cohesiveness resulting in poor withdrawal of the paste during the stencil printing process. The phase angles (d) was used to correlate the quality of the dense suspensions to the formulation of solder paste materials. This study has revealed the value of having a rheological measurement for explaining and characterising solder pastes for stencil printing. As the demand for lead free pastes increases rheological measurements can assist with the formulation or development of new pastes.

Purpose: To develop an improved mathematical model for the prediction of dose accuracy of Dosators - based upon the geometry of the machine in conjunction with measured flow properties of the powder. Methods: A mathematical model has been created, based on a analytical method of differential slices - incorporating measured flow properties. The key flow properties of interest in this investigation were: flow function, effective angle of wall friction, wall adhesion, bulk density, stress ratio K and permeability. To simulate the real process and (very importantly) validate the model, a Dosator test-rig has been used to measure the forces acting on the Dosator during the filling stage, the force required to eject the dose and the dose weight. Results: Preliminary results were obtained from the Dosator test-rig. Figure 1 [Omitted] shows the dose weight for different depths to the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and different levels of pre-compaction of the powder bed. A strong influence over dose weight arising from the proximity between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and the conditions of the powder bed has been established. Conclusions: The model will provide a useful tool to predict dosing accuracy and, thus, optimise the future design of Dosator based equipment technology – based on measured bulk properties of the powder to be handled. Another important factor (with a significant influence) on Dosator processes, is the condition of the powder bed and the clearance between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed.

Purpose: This paper seeks to investigate the factors influencing the business performance of estate agency in England and Wales. Design/methodology/approach: The paper investigates the effect of housing market, company size and pricing policy on business performance in the estate agency sector in England and Wales. The analysis uses the survey data of Woolwich Cost of Moving Survey (a survey of transactions costs sponsored by the Woolwich/Barclays Bank) from 2003 to 2005 to test the hypothesis that the business performance of estate agency is affected by industry characteristics and firm factors. Findings: The empirical analysis indicates that the business performance of estate agency is subject to market environment volatility such as market uncertainty, housing market liquidity and house price changes. The firm factors such as firm size and the level of agency fee have no explanatory power in explaining business performance. The level of agency fee is positively associated with firm size, market environment and liquidity. Research limitations/implications: The research is limited to the data received and is based on a research project on transaction costs designed prior to this analysis. Originality/value: There is little other research that investigates the factors determining the business performance of estate agency, using consecutive data of three years across England and Wales. The findings are useful for practitioners and/or managers to allocate resources and adjust their business strategy to enhance business performance in the estate agency sector.
