The article focuses on an information system to exploit the use of metadata within film and television production. It is noted that the television and film industries are used to working on big projects. This involves the use of actual film, video tape, and P.E.R.T charts for project planning. Scripts are in most instances revised. It is essential to attach information on these in order to manage, track and retrieve them. The use of metadata eases the operations involved in these industries.

The television and film industries are used to working on large projects. These projects use media and documents of various types, ranging from actual film and videotape to items such as PERT charts for project planning. Some items, such as scripts, evolve over a period and go through many versions. It is often necessary to attach information to these “objects” in order to manage, track, and retrieve them. On large productions there may be hundreds of personnel who need access to this material and who in their turn generate new items which form some part of the final production. The requirements for this industry in terms of an information system may be generalized and a distributed software architecture built, primarily using the internet, to serve the needs of these projects. This architecture must enable potentially very large collections of objects to be managed in a secure environment with distributed responsibilities held by many working on the production. The requirement for a very accurate dependence analysis to underpin software tools to aid the generation of efficient parallel implementations of scalar code is argued. The current status of dependence analysis is shown to be inadequate for the generation of efficient parallel code, causing too many conservative assumptions to be made. This paper summarises the limitations of conventional dependence analysis techniques, and then describes a series of extensions which enable the production of a much more accurate dependence graph. The extensions include analysis of symbolic variables, the development of a symbolic inequality disproof algorithm and its exploitation in a symbolic Banerjee inequality test; the use of inference engine proofs; the exploitation of exact dependence and dependence pre-domination attributes; interprocedural array analysis; conditional variable definition tracing; integer array tracing and division calculations. Analysis case studies on typical numerical code is shown to reduce the total dependencies estimated from conventional analysis by up to 50%. The techniques described in this paper have been embedded within a suite of tools, CAPTools, which combines analysis with user knowledge to produce efficient parallel implementations of numerical mesh based codes.

User supplied knowledge and interaction is a vital component of a toolkit for producing high quality parallel implementations of scalar FORTRAN numerical code. In this paper we consider the necessary components that such a parallelisation toolkit should possess to provide an effective environment to identify, extract and embed user relevant user knowledge. We also examine to what extent these facilities are available in leading parallelisation tools; in particular we discuss how these issues have been addressed in the development of the user interface of the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools (CAPTools). The CAPTools environment has been designed to enable user exploration, interaction and insertion of user knowledge to facilitate the automatic generation of very efficient parallel code. A key issue in the user's interaction is control of the volume of information so that the user is focused on only that which is needed. User control over the level and extent of information revealed at any phase is supplied using a wide variety of filters. Another issue is the way in which information is communicated. Dependence analysis and its resulting graphs involve a lot of sophisticated rather abstract concepts unlikely to be familiar to most users of parallelising tools. As such, considerable effort has been made to communicate with the user in terms that they will understand. These features, amongst others, and their use in the parallelisation process are described and their effectiveness discussed.

The original concept was to create a 'simulation' which would provide trainee teachers, specializing in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) with the opportunity to explore a primary school environment. Within the simulation, factors affecting the development and implementation of ICT would be modelled so that trainees would be able to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to identify appropriate strategies to overcome the limitations. To this end, we have developed Allsorts Primary - the prototype of a simulated interactive environment, representing a typical primary school

The representation and manipulation of natural human understanding of temporal phenomena is a fundamental field of study in Computer Science, which aims both to emulate human thinking, and to use the methods of human intelligence to underpin engineering solutions. In particular, in the domain of Artificial Intelligence, temporal knowledge may be uncertain and incomplete due to the unavailability of complete and absolute temporal information. This paper introduces an inferential framework for deriving logical explanations from partial temporal information. Based on a graphical representation which allows expression of both absolute and relative temporal knowledge in incomplete forms, the system can deliver a verdict to the question if a given set of statements is temporally consistent or not, and provide understandable logical explanation of analysis by simplified contradiction and rule based reasoning.

Following the integration of nurse and midwifery education into institutions of higher education in the United Kingdom, a number of studies have shown that a defined clinical framework for nursing and midwifery lecturers in practice areas is lacking. The aim of this study was to explore strategies that nurse and midwifery lecturers from one higher education institution in south east England can use to work collaboratively with nurses and midwives to promote the utilization of research findings in practice. A cross-sectional survey using a structured questionnaire was sent to a sample of 60 nurse and midwifery lecturers and 90 clinical managers. Response rates of 67% (40) and 69% (62) respectively were obtained. The main strategies suggested were to make clinical staff more aware of what research exist in their specialties; to help them to access research information from research databases; and to critically appraise this information. Other strategies were for teachers to run research workshops on site; to undertake joint research projects with clinical staff; to set up journal clubs or research interest groups; and to help formulate clinical guidelines and protocols which are explicitly research-based.

Hurricanes are destructive storms with strong winds, intense storm surges, and heavy rainfall. The resulting impact from a hurricane can include structural damage to buildings and infrastructure, flooding, and ultimately loss of human life. This paper seeks to identify the impact of Hurricane Ivan on the aected population of Grenada, one of the Caribbean islands. Hurricane Ivan made landfall on 7th September 2004 and resulted in 80% of the population being adversely aected. The methods that were used to model these impacts involved performing hazard and risk assessments using GIS and remote sensing techniques. Spatial analyses were used to create a hazard and a risk map. Hazards were identied initially as those caused by storm surges, severe winds speeds, and flooding events related to Hurricane Ivan. These estimated hazards were then used to create a risk map. An innovative approach was adopted, including the use of hillshading to assess the damage caused by high wind speeds. This paper explains in detail the methodology used and the results produced.

This study examines the roll-out of a collaborative information repository or 'knowledge-base' in a medium-sized UK professional services firm over a six year period. Data from usage logs provides the basis for analysis of the dynamic evolution of social networks around the depository during this time. The adoption pattern follows an 's-curve' and usage exhibits something of a power law distribution, both attributable to network effects and network opposition is associated with organisational performance on a number of indicators. But periodicity in usage is evident and the usage distribution displays an exponential cut-off. Fourier analysis provides some evidence of mathematical complexity in the periodicity. Some implications of complex patterns in social network data for research and management are discussed.

OBJECTIVES: This paper describes the chemistry and properties of polyacid-modified composite resins ("compomers") designed for use in clinical dentistry, and reviews the literature in this area. METHODS: Information has been obtained from over 50 published articles appearing in the dental and biomaterials literature, with studies being principally identified through MedLine. RESULTS: Published work shows that polyacid-modified composite resins constitute a discrete class of polymeric repair material for use in dentistry. Their distinction is that they contain hydrophilic components, and these cause water to be drawn into the material following cure. This triggers an acid-base reaction, and gives the materials certain clinically-desirable properties (fluoride release, buffering capability) that are also associated with glass-ionomer cements. The water uptake leads to a decline in certain, though not all, physical properties. However, clinical studies have shown these materials to perform acceptably in a variety of applications (Class I, Class II and Class V cavities, as fissure sealants and as orthodontic band cements), especially in children's teeth. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Polyacid-modified composite resins constitute a versatile class of dental repair material, whose bioactivity confers clinical advantages, and which are particularly useful in children's dentistry.

A communication system model for mutual information performance analysis of multiple-symbol differential M-phase shift keying over time-correlated, time-varying flat-fading communication channels is developed. This model is a finite-state Markov (FSM) equivalent channel representing the cascade of the differential encoder, FSM channel model and differential decoder. A state-space approach is used to model channel phase time correlations. The equivalent model falls in a class that facilitates the use of the forward backward algorithm, enabling the important information theoretic results to be evaluated. Using such a model, one is able to calculate mutual information for differential detection over time-varying fading channels with an essentially finite time set of correlations, including the Clarke fading channel. Using the equivalent channel, it is proved and corroborated by simulations that multiple-symbol differential detection preserves the channel information capacity when the observation interval approaches infinity.

This chapter focuses on what the key decision makers in organizations decide after having received information on the current state of the organizational performance. Because of strong attributions to success and failure, it is impossible to predict in advance which concrete actions will occur. We can however find out what kinds of actions are decided upon by means of an organizational learning model that focuses on the hastenings and delays after performance feedback. As an illustration, the responses to performance signals by trainers and club owners in Dutch soccer clubs are analyzed.
