Computational modelling-a key component in materials processing

Computational analysis software is now widely accepted as a key industrial tool for plant design and process analysis. This is due in part to increased accuracy in the models, larger and faster computer systems and better graphical interfaces that allow easy use of the technology by engineers. The use of computational modelling to test new ideas and analyse current processes helps to take the guesswork out of industrial process design and offers attractive cost savings. An overview of computer-based modelling techniques as applied to the materials processing industry is presented and examples of their application are provided in the contexts of the mixing and refining of lead bullion and the manufacture of lead ingots.

Probabilistic approach in weighted Markov branching processes

This note provides a new probabilistic approach in discussing the weighted Markov branching process (WMBP) which is a natural generalisation of the ordinary Markov branching process. Using this approach, some important characteristics regarding the hitting times of such processes can be easily obtained. In particular, the closed forms for the mean extinction time and conditional mean extinction time are presented. The explosion behaviour of the process is investigated and the mean explosion time is derived. The mean global holding time and the mean total survival time are also obtained. The close link between these newly developed processes and the well-known compound Poisson processes is investigated. It is revealed that any weighted Markov branching process (WMBP) is a random time change of a compound Poisson process.

Examines the provisions of European Parliament and Council Directive 2004/38 protecting the rights of EU citizens' partners to move freely within the EU. Highlights criticisms of the previous legislation, in particular, the lack of rights for cohabitees. Considers the extension of rights to registered partners, and the improved position of unmarried partners, noting, however, the lack of guidance on whether an unmarried couple's relationship is "durable" and "duly attested". X-ray crystallographic structures of neuroprotective pyrimidine derivatives: (I) the mesylate salt of BW1003C87 and (II) sipatrigine base

Drugs based on 5-phenyl-2,4 diamino pyrimidine and 6-phenyl-1,2,4 triazine derivatives are well known for their effects on the central nervous system. The study presented here provides detailed crystal structures of two pyrimidine derivatives which have neuroprotective properties in models of both grey and white matter ischemia. Recently published studies suggest that the compounds lamotrigine (a triazine derivative), and the two pyrimidines BW1003C87 (I) and sipatrigine (II) mediate their primary in vivo mode of action by inhibiting voltage-gated Na+ channels. The X-ray crystal structures will contribute valuable data for applications involving binding and modelling studies of the biological actions of these drugs.
