A computer-based numerical modelling of the adsorption process of gas phase metallic particles on the surface of a graphite substrate has been performed via the application of molecular dynamics simulation method. The simulation relates to an extensive STM-based experiment performed in this field, and reproduces part of the experimental results. Both two-body and many-body inter-atomic potentials have been employed. A Morse-type potential describing the metal-carbon interactions at the interface was specifically formulated for this modelling. Intercalation of silver in graphite has been observed as well as the correct alignments of monomers, dimers and two-dimensional islands on the surface. This paper describes the architecture of the knowledge based system (KBS) component of Smartfire, a fire field modelling tool for use by members of the fire safety engineering community who are not expert in modelling techniques. The KBS captures the qualitative reasoning of an experienced modeller in the assessment of room geometries, so as to set up the important initial parameters of the problem. Fire modelling expertise is an example of geometric and spatial reasoning, which raises representational problems. The approach taken in this project is a qualitative representation of geometric room information based on Forbus’ concept of a metric diagram. This takes the form of a coarse grid, partitioning the domain in each of the three spatial dimensions. Inference over the representation is performed using a case-based reasoning (CBR) component. The CBR component stores example partitions with key set-up parameters; this paper concentrates on the key parameter of grid cell distribution.

A two dimensional staggered unstructured discretisation scheme for the solution of fluid flow problems has been developed. This scheme stores and solves the velocity vector resolutes normal and parallel to each cell face and other scalar variables (pressure, temperature) are stored at cell centres. The coupled momentum; continuity and energy equations are solved, using the well known pressure correction algorithm SIMPLE. The method is tested for accuracy and convergence behaviour against standard cell-centre solutions in a number of benchmark problems: The Lid-Driven Cavity, Natural Convection in a Cavity and the Melting of Gallium in a rectangular domain.

The pseudo-spectral solution method offers a flexible and fast alternative to the more usual finite element and volume methods, particularly when the long-time transient behaviour of a system is of interest. The exact solution is obtained at grid collocation points leading to superior accuracy on modest grids. Furthermore, the grid can be freely adapted in time and space to particular flow conditions or geometric variations, especially useful where strongly coupled, time-dependent, multi-physics solutions are investigated. Examples include metallurgical applications involving the interaction of electromagnetic fields and conducting liquids with a free surface. The electromagnetic field determines the instantaneous liquid volume shape, which then affects the electromagnetic field. A general methodology of the pseudo-spectral approach is presented, with several instructive example applications: the aluminium electrolysis MHD problem, induction melting in a cold crucible and the dynamics of AC/DC magnetically levitated droplets. Finally, comparisons with available analytical solutions and to experimental measurements are discussed.

Two evacuation trials were conducted within Brazilian library facilities by FSEG staff in January 2005. These trials represent one of the first such trials conducted in Brazil. The purpose of these evacuation trials was to collect pre-evacuation time data from a population with a cultural background different to that found in western Europe. In total some 34 pre-evacuation times were collected from the experiments and these ranged from 5 to 98 seconds with a mean pre-evacuation time of 46.7 seconds

Reflects on the scope of a shop owner's duty of care under the Occupiers' Liability Act 1957 to keep floors clear of spillages. Reviews the principles formulated by the Court of Appeal in Ward v Tesco Stores Ltd, including the evidential burden to show the discharge of the duty, and the approach adopted in subsequent cases. Discusses the High Court ruling in Piccolo v Larkstock Ltd (t/a Chiltern Flowers) on whether a small florist on Marylebone Station concourse was obliged to keep the floor dry and petal-free at all times and notes the importance of a proper system to safeguard customers.
