Performance analysis of a register insertion ring with a variable size buffer

There has been a recent revival of interest in the register insertion (RI) protocol because of its high throughput and low delay characteristics. Several variants of the protocol have been investigated with a view to integrating voice and data applications on a single local area network (LAN). In this paper the performance of an RI ring with a variable size buffer is studied by modelling and simulation. The chief advantage of the proposed scheme is that an efficient but simple bandwidth allocation scheme is easily incorporated. Approximate formulas are derived for queue lengths, queueing times, and total end-to-end transfer delays. The results are compared with previous analyses and with simulation estimates. The effectiveness of the proposed protocol in ensuring fairness of access under conditions of heavy and unequal loading is investigated.

Guidance on interviewing child witnesses in Scotland

The guidance was commissioned from Dr Amina Memon and Lynn Hulse at Aberdeen University. Their work was overseen by a steering group with representatives from the Scottish Executive Justice Department, the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, NCH Scotland, the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland, the Association of Directors of Social Work, the Law Society for Scotland, the Scottish Association of Community Child Health and the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration. A review of the rationales for corporate risk management: fashion or the need?

This paper presents the extensive literature survey based both on theoretical rationales for hedging as well as the empirical evidence that support the implications of the theory regarding the arguments for the corporate risk management relevance and its influence on the company’s value. The survey of literature presented in this paper has revealed that there are two chief classes of rationales for corporate decision to hedge - maximisation of shareholder value or maximisation of managers’ private utility. The paper concludes that, the total benefit of hedging is the combination of all these motives and, if the costs of using corporate risk management instruments are less than the benefits provided via the avenues mentioned in this paper, or any other benefit perceived by the market, then risk management is a shareholder-value enhancing activity.
