Microwave mediated reduction of heterocycle and fluorine containing nitroaromatics with Mo(CO)(6) and DBU

Heterocycle containing nitroaromatics were reduced by Mo(CO)(6) and DBU in EtOH under microwave irradiation within 15 min. Under the same conditions, 4-fluoronitrobenzene was reduced to 4-fluoroaniline, whereas 2-chloro-1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene afforded a mixture of 3-chloro-4-fluoroaniline and 3-chloro-4-ethoxyaniline. The extent of the competing SNAr/reduction process could be influenced by the nature of the solvent, with t-BuOH the inert solvent of choice. The latter was used as solvent for SNAr/reductions of 2-chloro-1-fluoro-4-nitrobenzene with S-nucleophiles to yield 3-chloro-4-mercaptoanilines. Crown Copyright (c) 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd. An analysis of masculine and feminine writings in postings within a series of health and social care online undergraduate courses

This study aims to extend understanding of pedagogic dialogue by analysing the effect that the gender of the student has on interaction within a selection of ordinary health and social care on line courses.

Social policy for nurses and the helping professions

The book examines the relationship between welfare and health and includes discussion of key policy issues such as; changes in health care delivery, regulation of professionals, privatisation, welfare pluralism and the tackling of health and social inequalities. The significance of social policy in preventing ill health and disability, as well as supporting the sick and disabled people, is emphasised throughout the book.

Aspects of midwifery care 2: 'enhanced role' and social aspects

This is the second in a series of six papers presenting key findings from a national study that was undertaken to investigate the role and responsibilities of midwives and to identify and address continuing educational need. The background to the study and the titles of other papers in the series were outlined in the first paper. This paper focuses on two key aspects of the midwife’s role: ‘enhanced role’ activities and social and emotional care. The implications of the findings for practice and education are discussed.

South East London Palliative and End of Life Care Education and Training Strategy: Meeting the Education and Training Needs of the Health & Social Care Workforce Involved in the Care of Patients and Carers at the End of Life.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Aims 1. The aims of this strategy are • to ensure that a full range of education and training related to the adult end of life care pathway is available across South East London to meet the needs of our health and social care workforce • to enable those responsible for end of life care education and training commissioning to procure comprehensively from a full range of education providers in a systematic and strategic manner. Background 2. The work that underpins this strategy was begun by the South East London Cancer Network via its Palliative and End of Life Care Coordinating Group and then developed by way of the Marie Curie Delivering Choice Programme’s Education and Training work stream.

Social and demographic factors of young fathers in the UK and USA

Research on disadvantaged young fathers has been minimally addressed in the literature, particularly in the UK. In both countries teenage pregnancy rates are high and costly in terms of social policy and community provision. This paper explores 2 studies involving 24 young men with an average age of 17 on the transition to young fatherhood; one study was conducted in the UK with white young men and the other in the USA with black young men. The findings from both studies indicated common themes from their stories, particularly with regard to the high levels of disadvantage and social exclusion they had been exposed to in their demographic environments and the anti-social behaviour they described engaging in, prior to the birth of their child/ren. Specifically, a significant proportion of the young men described how they had been immersed in drug and gun crimes and how this shaped their lives and neighbourhoods. Becoming fathers is presented by both sets of young men as rescuing them from this criminal lifestyle.

An ethanolic mixture of molybdenurn hexacarbonyl and DBU mediates the reduction of nitroarenes to the corresponding anilines in excellent yields in 15-30 minutes under microwave irradiation.
