Parallel processing techniques have been used in the past to provide high performance computing resources for activities such as fire-field modelling. This has traditionally been achieved using specialized hardware and software, the expense of which would be difficult to justify for many fire engineering practices. In this article we demonstrate how typical office-based PCs attached to a Local Area Network has the potential to offer the benefits of parallel processing with minimal costs associated with the purchase of additional hardware or software. It was found that good speedups could be achieved on homogeneous networks of PCs, for example a problem composed of ~100,000 cells would run 9.3 times faster on a network of 12 800MHz PCs than on a single 800MHz PC. It was also found that a network of eight 3.2GHz Pentium 4 PCs would run 7.04 times faster than a single 3.2GHz Pentium computer. A dynamic load balancing scheme was also devised to allow the effective use of the software on heterogeneous PC networks. This scheme also ensured that the impact between the parallel processing task and other computer users on the network was minimized.

Many pieces of legislation have been implemented with the anticipation - or justification - that they will have a deterrent effect. Deterrence was clearly argued in the debate preceding the Swedish prostitution law prohibiting the purchase of sexual services, but less so regarding the Dangerous Dogs Act, which was a very rapid response to a particular moral panic. As it turned out, the Swedish law has had a deterrent effect on street prostitution in that 'respectable' buyers were deterred. It will be argued that it is this very 'respectability' that makes deterrence work in this case. Regarding the Dangerous Dogs Act, the owners of Pit Bulls and other banned breeds are not considered 'respectable' and the banning might have had the reversed effect - increasing the attraction of these dogs, rather than deterring the ownership. Apart from deterrence and its consequences, the rendering invisible of key actors - buyers and owners respectively - and the use of symbolic legislation to promote moral messages will also be considered. The study examines the impact of knowledge and social bonds on commitment and behavioural loyalty in auditor-client relationships. A model is proposed and tested using data collected from stock exchange company executives in the UK. The results show the significant effects of the knowledge and social bonds on commitment. Commitment is shown to be a mediating variable, which influences word-of-mouth and continuance but not the purchase of non-audit services. In the light of these findings, suggestions are provided to auditors in developing relationship bonds and managing the relationship at the firm level.

This scheme ensured that the impact between the parallel processing task and other computer users on the network was minimized thus allowing practical parallel processing within a conventional office environment. This is a book on general issues to do with assessment, not a statistics book, although it touches on statistical issues. Although it is intended for an international readership to include teachers, educationalists, policy makers and personnel managers and would be of interest to such groups it has been written mainly from the viewpoint of developed countries and is not obviously essential reading or an essential purchase for anyone. Short biographies of the 15 contributors are given at the start of the book and references from all the chapters are brought together at the end. The order of chapters appears to be arbitrary to some extent and there is little cross-referencing from one chapter to another.

The availability of CFD software that can easily be used and produce high efficiency on a wide range of parallel computers is extremely limited. The investment and expertise required to parallelise a code can be enormous. In addition, the cost of supercomputers forces high utilisation to justify their purchase, requiring a wide range of software. To break this impasse, tools are urgently required to assist in the parallelisation process that dramatically reduce the parallelisation time but do not degrade the performance of the resulting parallel software. In this paper we discuss enhancements to the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools (CAPTools) to assist in the parallelisation of complex unstructured mesh-based computational mechanics codes.
