Sometimes, technological solutions to practical problems are devised that conspicuously take into account the constraints to which a given culture is subjecting the particular task or the manner in which it is carried out. The culture may be a professional culture (e.g., the practice of law), or an ethnic-cum-professional culture (e.g., dance in given ethnic cultures from South-East Asia), or, again, a denominational culture prescribing an orthopraxy impinging on everyday life through, for example, prescribed abstinence from given categories of workday activities, or dietary laws. Massimo Negrotti's Theory of the artificial is a convenient framework for discussing some of these techniques. We discuss a few examples, but focus on the contrast of two that are taken from the same cultural background, namely, technological applications in compliance with Jewish Law orthopraxy. •Soya-, mycoprotein- or otherwise derived meat surrogates are an example ofnaturoid; they emulate the flavours and olfactory properties, as well as the texture and the outer and inner appearance, of the meat product (its kind, cut, form) they set out to emulate (including amenability to cooking in the usual manner for the model), while satisfying cultural dietary prohibitions. •In contrast, the Sabbath Notebook, a writing surrogate we describe in this paper, is atechnoid: it emulates a technique (writing to store alphanumeric information), while satisfying the prohibition of writing at particular times of the liturgical calendar (the Sabbath and the major holidays).

Microwave processing of materials is numerically simulated using a coupled solver approach. Microwave heating is a complex coupled process due to the variation in dielectric properties during heating. The effects of heating an object in a electromagnetic field directly influence the manner in which it interacts with the field. Simplifying assumptions and empirical solutions do not capture the fundamental physics involved and, in general, do not provide usefully accurate solutions in a number of practical problems. In order to capture the underlying processes involved in microwave heating, the problem must be looked at in a holistic manner rather than a number of discrete processes. This contribution outlines a coupled-solver multiphysics analysis approach to the solution of practical microwave heating problems.

Social network analysts have tried to capture the idea of social role explicitly by proposing a framework that precisely gives conditions under which group actors are playing equivalent roles. They term these methods positional analysis techniques. The most general definition is regular equivalence which captures the idea that equivalent actors are related in a similar way to equivalent alters. Regular equivalence gives rise to a whole class of partitions on a network. Given a network we have two different computational problems. The first is how to find a particular regular equivalence. An algorithm exists to find the largest regular partition but there are not efficient algorithms to test whether there is a regular k-partition. That is a partition in k groups that is regular. In addition, when dealing with real data, it is unlikely that any regular partitions exist. To overcome this problem relaxations of regular equivalence have been proposed along with optimisation techniques to find nearly regular partitions. In this paper we review the algorithms that have developed to find particular regular equivalences and look at some of the recent theoretical results which give an insight into the complexity of finding regular partitions.

Second Language Processing examines the problems facing learners in the second language classroom from the theoretical perspectives of Processing Instruction (structured input) and Enhanced Input. These two theories are brought to bear on a variety of processing problems, such as the difficulty of connecting second language grammatical forms encoding tense and mood as well as noun-adjective agreement with their meaning. Empirical studies examine a range of languages including Japanese, Italian and Spanish, through which the authors suggest practical solutions to these processing problems.

The use of unstructured mesh codes on parallel machines is one of the most effective ways to solve large computational mechanics problems. Completely general geometries and complex behaviour can be modelled and, in principle, the inherent sparsity of many such problems can be exploited to obtain excellent parallel efficiencies. However, unlike their structured counterparts, the problem of distributing the mesh across the memory of the machine, whilst minimising the amount of interprocessor communication, must be carefully addressed. This process is an overhead that is not incurred by a serial code, but is shown to rapidly computable at turn time and tailored for the machine being used.
