The formulation of the carrier-phase momentum and enthalpy source terms in mixed Lagrangian-Eulerian models of particle-laden flows is frequently reported inaccurately. Under certain circumstances, this can lead to erroneous implementations, which violate physical laws. A particle- rather than carrier-based approach is suggested for a consistent treatment of these terms.

The computational modelling of extrusion and forging processes is now well established. There are two main approaches: Lagrangian and Eulerian. The first has considerable complexities associated with remeshing, especially when the code is parallelised. The second approach means that the mould has to be assumed to be entirely rigid and this may not be the case. In this paper, a novel approach is described which utilises finite volume methods on unstructured meshes. This approach involves the solution of free surface non-Newtonian fluid flow equations in an Eulerian context to track the behaviour of the workpiece and its extrusion/forging, and the solution of the solid mechanics equations in the Lagrangian context to predict the deformation/stress behaviour of the die. Test cases for modelling extrusion and forging problems using this approach will be presented.

A multi-phase framework is typically required for the CFD modelling of metals reduction processes. Such processes typically involve the interaction of liquid metals, a gas (often air) top space, liquid droplets in the top space and injection of both solid particles and gaseous bubbles into the bath. The exchange of mass, momentum and energy between the phases is fundamental to these processes. Multi-phase algorithms are complex and can be unreliable in terms of either or both convergence behaviour or in the extent to which the physics is captured. In this contribution, we discuss these multi-phase flow issues and describe an example of each of the main “single phase” approaches to modelling this class of problems (i.e., Eulerian–Lagrangian and Eulerian–Eulerian). Their utility is illustrated in the context of two problems – one involving the injection of sparging gases into a steel continuous slab caster and the other based on the development of a novel process for aluminium electrolysis. In the steel caster, the coupling of the Lagrangian tracking of the gas phase with the continuum enables the simulation of the transient motion of the metal–flux interface. The model of the electrolysis process employs a novel method for the calculation of slip velocities of oxygen bubbles, resulting from the dissolution of alumina, which allows the efficiency of the process to be predicted.

A finite volume computer model of the continuous casting process for steel flat products has been developed. In this first stage, the model concentrates on the hydrodynamic aspects of the process and in particular the dynamic behavior of the metal/slag interface. The model was validated against experimental measurements obtained in a water model apparatus.

11 Å tobermorite, Ca5Si6O16(OH)2 · 4H2O, is a layer lattice ion exchange mineral whose potential as a carrier for Ag+ and Zn2+ ions in antimicrobial, bioactive formulations has not yet been explored. In view of this, the in vitro bioactivity of Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged 11 Å tobermorites and their bactericidal action against S. aureus and P.aeruginosa are reported. The in vitro bioactivity of the synthetic unsubstituted tobermorite phase was confirmed by the formation of bone-like hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) on its surface within 48 h of contact with simulated body fluid. The substitution of labile Ag+ ions into the tobermorite lattice delayed the onset of HCA-formation to 72 h; whereas, the Zn2+-substituted phase failed to elicit an HCA-layer within 14 days. Both Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged tobermorite phases were found to exhibit marked antimicrobial action against S. aureus and P.aeruginosa, two common pathogens in biomaterial-centred infections.

Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged zeolites zeolites and clays have been used as coatings and in composites to confer broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties on a range of technical and biomedical materials. 11 angstrom tobermorite is a bioactive layer lattice ion exchanger whose potential as a carrier for Ag+ and Zn2+ ions in antimicrobial formulations has not yet been explored. In view of this, batch Ag+- and Zn2+-exchange kinetics of two structurally distinct synthetic 11 angstrom tobermorites and their subsequent bactericidal action against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa are reported. During the exchange reactions, Ag+ ions were found to replace labile interlayer cations; whereas, Zn2+ ions also displaced structural Ca2+ ions from the tobermorite lattice. In spite of these different mechanisms, a simple pseudo-second-order model provided a suitable description of both exchange processes (R-2 >= 0.996). The Ag+- and Zn2+-exchanged tobermorite phases exhibited marked bacteriostatic effects against both bacteria, and accordingly, their potential for use as antimicrobial materials for in situ bone tissue regeneration is discussed. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems are more sensitive to carrier frequency offset (CFO) compared to the conventional single carrier systems. CFO destroys the orthogonality among subcarriers, resulting in inter-carrier interference (ICI) and degrading system performance. To mitigate the effect of the CFO, it has to be estimated and compensated before the demodulation. The CFO can be divided into an integer part and a fractional part. In this paper, we investigate a maximum-likelihood estimator (MLE) for estimating the integer part of the CFO in OFDM systems, which requires only one OFDM block as the pilot symbols. To reduce the computational complexity of the MLE and improve the bandwidth efficiency, a suboptimum estimator (Sub MLE) is studied. Based on the hypothesis testing method, a threshold Sub MLE (T-Sub MLE) is proposed to further reduce the computational complexity. The performance analysis of the proposed T-Sub MLE is obtained and the analytical results match the simulation results well. Numerical results show that the proposed estimators are effective and reliable in both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and frequency-selective fading channels in OFDM systems.
