This paper presents the findings of an experiment which looked at the effects of performing applied tasks (action learning) prior to the completion of the theoretical learning of these tasks (explanation-based learning), and vice-versa. The applied tasks took the form of laboratories for the Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) course, theoretical learning was via lectures.

It is now possible to use powerful general purpose computer architectures to support post-production of both video and multimedia projects. By devising a suitable portable software architecture and using high-speed networking in an appropriate manner, a system has been constructed where editors are no longer tied to a specific location. New types of production, such as multi-threaded interactive video, are supported. Editors may also work remotely where very high speed network connection is not currently provided. An object-oriented database is used for the comprehensive cataloging of material and to support automatic audio/video object migration and replication. The importance of patterns in constructing complex systems has long been recognised in other disciplines. In software engineering, for example, well-crafted object-oriented architectures contain several design patterns. Focusing on mechanisms of constructing software during system development can yield an architecture that is simpler, clearer and more understandable than if design patterns were ignored or not properly applied. In this paper, we propose a model that uses object-oriented design patterns to develop a core bitemporal conceptual model. We define three core design patterns that form a core bitemporal conceptual model of a typical bitemporal object. Our framework is known as the Bitemporal Object, State and Event Modelling Approach (BOSEMA) and the resulting core model is known as a Bitemporal Object, State and Event (BOSE) model. Using this approach, we demonstrate that we can enrich data modelling by using well known design patterns which can help designers to build complex models of bitemporal databases.

Most of the air quality modelling work has been so far oriented towards deterministic simulations of ambient pollutant concentrations. This traditional approach, which is based on the use of one selected model and one data set of discrete input values, does not reflect the uncertainties due to errors in model formulation and input data. Given the complexities of urban environments and the inherent limitations of mathematical modelling, it is unlikely that a single model based on routinely available meteorological and emission data will give satisfactory short-term predictions. In this study, different methods involving the use of more than one dispersion model, in association with different emission simulation methodologies and meteorological data sets, were explored for predicting best CO and benzene estimates, and related confidence bounds. The different approaches were tested using experimental data obtained during intensive monitoring campaigns in busy street canyons in Paris, France. Three relative simple dispersion models (STREET, OSPM and AEOLIUS) that are likely to be used for regulatory purposes were selected for this application. A sensitivity analysis was conducted in order to identify internal model parameters that might significantly affect results. Finally, a probabilistic methodology for assessing urban air quality was proposed.
