In many practical situations, batching of similar jobs to avoid setups is performed while constructing a schedule. This paper addresses the problem of non-preemptively scheduling independent jobs in a two-machine flow shop with the objective of minimizing the makespan. Jobs are grouped into batches. A sequence independent batch setup time on each machine is required before the first job is processed, and when a machine switches from processing a job in some batch to a job of another batch. Besides its practical interest, this problem is a direct generalization of the classical two-machine flow shop problem with no grouping of jobs, which can be solved optimally by Johnson's well-known algorithm. The problem under investigation is known to be NP-hard. We propose two O(n logn) time heuristic algorithms. The first heuristic, which creates a schedule with minimum total setup time by forcing all jobs in the same batch to be sequenced in adjacent positions, has a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2. By allowing each batch to be split into at most two sub-batches, a second heuristic is developed which has an improved worst-case performance ratio of 4/3. © 1998 The Mathematical Programming Society, Inc. This paper considers a variant of the classical problem of minimizing makespan in a two-machine flow shop. In this variant, each job has three operations, where the first operation must be performed on the first machine, the second operation can be performed on either machine but cannot be preempted, and the third operation must be performed on the second machine. The NP-hard nature of the problem motivates the design and analysis of approximation algorithms. It is shown that a schedule in which the operations are sequenced arbitrarily, but without inserted machine idle time, has a worst-case performance ratio of 2. Also, an algorithm that constructs four schedules and selects the best is shown to have a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2. A polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) is also presented.

A number of two dimensional staggered unstructured discretisation schemes for the solution of fluid flow and heat transfer problems have been developed. All schemes store and solve velocity vector components at cell faces with scalar variables solved at cell centres. The velocity is resolved into face-normal and face-parallel components and the various schemes investigated differ in the treatment of the parallel component. Steady-state and time-dependent fluid flow and thermal energy equations are solved with the well known pressure correction scheme, SIMPLE, employed to couple continuity and momentum. The numerical methods developed are tested on well known benchmark cases: the Lid-Driven Cavity, Natural Convection in a Cavity and Melting of Gallium in a rectangular domain. The results obtained are shown to be comparable to benchmark, but with accuracy dependent on scheme selection.

We study the two-machine flow shop problem with an uncapacitated interstage transporter. The jobs have to be split into batches, and upon completion on the first machine, each batch has to be shipped to the second machine by a transporter. The best known heuristic for the problem is a –approximation algorithm that outputs a two-shipment schedule. We design a –approximation algorithm that finds schedules with at most three shipments, and this ratio cannot be improved, unless schedules with more shipments are created. This improvement is achieved due to a thorough analysis of schedules with two and three shipments by means of linear programming. We formulate problems of finding an optimal schedule with two or three shipments as integer linear programs and develop strongly polynomial algorithms that find solutions to their continuous relaxations with a small number of fractional variables

In this note, we consider the scheduling problem of minimizing the sum of the weighted completion times on a single machine with one non-availability interval on the machine under the non-resumable scenario. Together with a recent 2-approximation algorithm designed by Kacem [I. Kacem, Approximation algorithm for the weighted flow-time minimization on a single machine with a fixed non-availability interval, Computers & Industrial Engineering 54 (2008) 401–410], this paper is the first successful attempt to develop a constant ratio approximation algorithm for this problem. We present two approaches to designing such an algorithm. Our best algorithm guarantees a worst-case performance ratio of 2+ε. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

General-purpose parallel processing for solving day-to-day industrial problems has been slow to develop, partly because of the lack of suitable hardware from well-established, mainstream computer manufacturers and suitably parallelized application software. The parallelization of a CFD-(computational fluid dynamics) flow solution code is known as ESAUNA. This code is part of SAUNA, a large CFD suite aimed at computing the flow around very complex aircraft configurations including complete aircraft. A novel feature of the SAUNA suite is that it is designed to use either block-structured hexahedral grids, unstructured tetrahedral grids, or a hybrid combination of both grid types. ESAUNA is designed to solve the Euler equations or the Navier-Stokes equations, the latter in conjunction with various turbulence models. Two fundamental parallelization concepts are used—namely, grid partitioning and encapsulation of communications. Grid partitioning is applied to both block-structured grid modules and unstructured grid modules. ESAUNA can also be coupled with other simulation codes for multidisciplinary computations such as flow simulations around an aircraft coupled with flutter prediction for transient flight simulations.

Recently, there has been considerable interest in solving viscoelastic problems in 3D particularly with the improvement in modern computing power. In many applications the emphasis has been on economical algorithms which can cope with the extra complexity that the third dimension brings. Storage and computer time are of the essence. The advantage of the finite volume formulation is that a large amount of memory space is not required. Iterative methods rather than direct methods can be used to solve the resulting linear systems efficiently.
