Narrating the archive and archiving narrative: the electronic book and the logic of the index

The creation of my hypermedia work Index of Love, which narrates a love story as an archive of moments, images and objects recollected, also articulated for me the potential of the book as electronic text. The book has always existed as both narrative and archive. Tables of contents and indexes allow the book to function simultaneously as linear narrative and non-linear, searchable database. The book therefore has more in common with the so-called 'new media' of the 21st century than it does with the dominant 20th century media of film, video and audiotape, whose logic and mode of distribution are resolutely linear. My thesis is that the non-linear logic of new media brings to the fore an aspect of the book - the index - whose potential for the production of narrative is only just beginning to be explored. When a reader/user accesses an electronic work, such as a website, via its menu, they simultaneously experience it as narrative and archive. The narrative journey taken is created through the menu choices made. Within the electronic book, therefore, the index (or menu) has the potential to function as more than just an analytical or navigational tool. It has the potential to become a creative, structuring device. This opens up new possibilities for the book, particularly as, in its paper based form, the book indexes factual work, but not fiction. Differential cytotoxic and prooxidnant activity of knipholone and knipholone anthrone

Knipholone (KP) and knipholone anthrone (KA) are natural 4-phenylanthraquinone structural analogues with established differential biological effects including in vitro antioxidant [1] and antimicrobial properties [2]. The present study was designed to investigate the comparative in vitro cytotoxic activity and the possible mechanism of action of these two compounds. We demonstrated that KA is by order of magnitude more cytotoxic to mammalian cells than KP. In parallel with the demonstrated cytotoxic effect, KA but not KP induces prooxidative DNA damage in the presence of copper ions. In order to establish the possible involvement of reactive oxygen species in the KA-mediated prooxidative effect, we investigated the protective effect of several metal chelators and reactive oxygen species scavengers. Our data suggest that reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide are involved and a good correlation between prooxidative action, antioxidant effect and cytotoxicity is established for these two structural analogues. The chemistry, pharmacology and potential medicinal/toxicological potential of these compounds are discussed.

X-ray crystallographic structures of neuroprotective pyrimidine derivatives: (I) the mesylate salt of BW1003C87 and (II) sipatrigine base

Drugs based on 5-phenyl-2,4 diamino pyrimidine and 6-phenyl-1,2,4 triazine derivatives are well known for their effects on the central nervous system. The study presented here provides detailed crystal structures of two pyrimidine derivatives which have neuroprotective properties in models of both grey and white matter ischemia. Recently published studies suggest that the compounds lamotrigine (a triazine derivative), and the two pyrimidines BW1003C87 (I) and sipatrigine (II) mediate their primary in vivo mode of action by inhibiting voltage-gated Na+ channels. The X-ray crystal structures will contribute valuable data for applications involving binding and modelling studies of the biological actions of these drugs.
