Traffic policing and bandwidth management strategies at the User Network Interface (UNI) of an ATM network are investigated by simulation. The network is assumed to transport real time (RT) traffic like voice and video as well as non-real time (non-RT) data traffic. The proposed policing function, called the super leaky bucket (S-LB), is based on the leaky bucket (LB), but handles the three types of traffic differently according to their quality of service (QoS) requirements. Separate queues are maintained for RT and non-RT traffic. They are normally served alternately, but if the number of RT cells exceeds a threshold, it gets non-pre-emptive priority. Further increase of the RT queue causes low priority cells to be discarded. Non-RT cells are buffered and the sources are throttled back during periods of congestion. The simulations clearly demonstrate the advantages of the proposed strategy in providing improved levels of service (delay, jitter and loss) for all types of traffic.

It is now possible to use powerful general purpose computer architectures to support post-production of both video and multimedia projects. By devising a suitable portable software architecture and using high-speed networking in an appropriate manner, a system has been constructed where editors are no longer tied to a specific location. New types of production, such as multi-threaded interactive video, are supported. Editors may also work remotely where very high speed network connection is not currently provided. An object-oriented database is used for the comprehensive cataloging of material and to support automatic audio/video object migration and replication. This paper aims to create a picture of aspects of the working lives of some trainers of technical and further education teachers in a specialist teacher training college in Bolton, Lancashire, from the 1950s to the 1980's. There is little reference to technical teacher training in the literature on teacher training in the second half of the twentieth century. With this gap in mind, this paper sets out to record some memories and impressions of staff involved during these years. Using data from a series of semi-structured interviews, the discussion centres upon their perceptions of their work: of their students, the working environment, the curriculum and their relationships with the technical colleges for whom they were training teachers. The paper has three sections. It begins with a brief discussion of the issues arising from the choice of research methods. The second section contextualises the study and traces the history of Bolton Technical Teachers' Training College from its establishment through to its merger with the Institute of Technology in 1982. This is followed by the presentation and discussion of the interview data.

This paper considers a variant of the classical problem of minimizing makespan in a two-machine flow shop. In this variant, each job has three operations, where the first operation must be performed on the first machine, the second operation can be performed on either machine but cannot be preempted, and the third operation must be performed on the second machine. The NP-hard nature of the problem motivates the design and analysis of approximation algorithms. It is shown that a schedule in which the operations are sequenced arbitrarily, but without inserted machine idle time, has a worst-case performance ratio of 2. Also, an algorithm that constructs four schedules and selects the best is shown to have a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2. A polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) is also presented.
