In this paper a continuum model for the prediction of segregation in granular material is presented. The numerical framework, a 3-D, unstructured grid, finite-volume code is described, and the micro-physical parametrizations, which are used to describe the processes and interactions at the microscopic level that lead to segregation, are analysed. Numerical simulations and comparisons with experimental data are then presented and conclusions are drawn on the capability of the model to accurately simulate the behaviour of granular matter during flow.

This paper presents a continuum model of the flow of granular material during filling of a silo, using a viscoplastic constitutive relation based on the Drucker-Prager plasticity yield function. The performed simulations demonstrate the ability of the model to realistically represent complex features of granular flows during filling processes, such as heap formation and non-zero inclination angle of the bulk material-air interface. In addition, micro-mechanical parametrizations which account for particle size segregation are incorporated into the model. It is found that numerical predictions of segregation phenomena during filling of a binary granular mixture agree well with experimental results. Further numerical tests indicate the capability of the model to cope successfully with complex operations involving granular mixtures.

The increasing complexity of new manufacturing processes and the continuously growing range of fabrication options mean that critical decisions about the insertion of new technologies must be made as early as possible in the design process. Mitigating the technology risks under limited knowledge is a key factor and major requirement to secure a successful development of the new technologies. In order to address this challenge, a risk mitigation methodology that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analysis is required. This paper outlines the methodology being developed under a major UK grand challenge project - 3D-Mintegration. The main focus is on identifying the risks through identification of the product key characteristics using a product breakdown approach. The assessment of the identified risks uses quantification and prioritisation techniques to evaluate and rank the risks. Traditional statistical process control based on process capability and six sigma concepts are applied to measure the process capability as a result of the risks that have been identified. This paper also details a numerical approach that can be used to undertake risk analysis. This methodology is based on computational framework where modelling and statistical techniques are integrated. Also, an example of modeling and simulation technique is given using focused ion beam which is among the investigated in the project manufacturing processes.

Metal casting is a process governed by the interaction of a range of physical phenomena. Most computational models of this process address only what are conventionally regarded as the primary phenomena – heat conduction and solidification. However, to predict other phenomena, such as porosity formation, requires modelling the interaction of the fluid flow, heat transfer, solidification and the development of stressdeformation in the solidified part of the casting. This paper will describe a modelling framework called PHYSICA[1] which has the capability to stimulate such multiphysical phenomena.
