Multiscale numerical modelling of crack propagation in two-dimensional metal plate

A novel multiscale model of brittle crack propagation in an Ag plate with macroscopic dimensions has been developed. The model represents crack propagation as stochastic drift-diffusion motion of the crack tip atom through the material, and couples the dynamics across three different length scales. It integrates the nanomechanics of bond rupture at the crack tip with the displacement and stress field equations of continuum based fracture theories. The finite element method is employed to obtain the continuum based displacement and stress fields over the macroscopic plate, and these are then used to drive the crack tip forward at the atomic level using the molecular dynamics simulation method based on many-body interatomic potentials. The linkage from the nanoscopic scale back to the macroscopic scale is established via the Ito stochastic calculus, the stochastic differential equation of which advances the tip to a new position on the macroscopic scale using the crack velocity and diffusion constant obtained on the nanoscale. Well known crack characteristics, such as the roughening transitions of the crack surfaces, crack velocity oscillations, as well as the macroscopic crack trajectories, are obtained.

Policy-driven self-management for an automotive middleware

This paper describes work towards the deployment of self-managing capabilities into an advanced middleware for automotive systems. The middleware will support a range of futuristic use-cases requiring context-awareness and dynamic system configuration. Several use-cases are described and their specific context-awareness requirements identified. The discussion is accompanied by a justification for the selection of policy-based computing as the autonomics technique to drive the self-management. The specific policy technology to be deployed is described briefly, with a focus on its specific features that are of direct relevance to the middleware project. A selected use-case is explored in depth to illustrate the extent of dynamic behaviour achievable in the proposed middleware architecture, which is composed of several policy-configured services. An evaluation of a community matron service from the patients’ perspective

Community matrons are a relatively new government initiative aimed at case managing people with long-term conditions to reduce the number of emergency bed days used in hospitals. Although there have been extensive evaluations of similar case management projects, to date there has been little evaluation of the community matron's role and the perceptions patients have of this new service. One of the main Government agendas for care is to deliver a high quality service driven by the needs of the service users (DH, 2000). This two part evaluative report sets out to explore how people with long-term conditions perceive the impact of community matrons and the differences this new service may have had on their lives. Questionnaires were sent to 100 patients who were currently being case-managed by a community matron to evaluate the community matron service from the patients' perspective.
