Realizing scalable performance on high performance computing systems is not straightforward for single-phenomenon codes (such as computational fluid dynamics [CFD]). This task is magnified considerably when the target software involves the interactions of a range of phenomena that have distinctive solution procedures involving different discretization methods. The problems of addressing the key issues of retaining data integrity and the ordering of the calculation procedures are significant. A strategy for parallelizing this multiphysics family of codes is described for software exploiting finite-volume discretization methods on unstructured meshes using iterative solution procedures. A mesh partitioning-based SPMD approach is used. However, since different variables use distinct discretization schemes, this means that distinct partitions are required; techniques for addressing this issue are described using the mesh-partitioning tool, JOSTLE. In this contribution, the strategy is tested for a variety of test cases under a wide range of conditions (e.g., problem size, number of processors, asynchronous / synchronous communications, etc.) using a variety of strategies for mapping the mesh partition onto the processor topology.

This paper describes the architecture of the knowledge based system (KBS) component of Smartfire, a fire field modelling tool for use by members of the fire safety engineering community who are not expert in modelling techniques. The KBS captures the qualitative reasoning of an experienced modeller in the assessment of room geometries, so as to set up the important initial parameters of the problem. Fire modelling expertise is an example of geometric and spatial reasoning, which raises representational problems. The approach taken in this project is a qualitative representation of geometric room information based on Forbus’ concept of a metric diagram. This takes the form of a coarse grid, partitioning the domain in each of the three spatial dimensions. Inference over the representation is performed using a case-based reasoning (CBR) component. The CBR component stores example partitions with key set-up parameters; this paper concentrates on the key parameter of grid cell distribution.

Fire and evacuation models with features such as the ability to realistically simulate the spread of heat and smoke and the human response to fire as well as the capability to model human performance in heeled orientations linked to a virtual reality environment that produces realistic visualisation of the modelled scenarios are now available and can be used to aid the engineer in assessing ship design and procedures. This paper describes the maritimeEXODUS ship evacuation and the SMARTFIRE fire simulation model and provides an example application demonstrating the use of the models used in pperforming fire and evacuation analysis for a large passenger ship partially based on the requirements of MSC circular 1033.

Active matrix liquid crystal displays (AMLCD) need to be protected in severe environments. This is achieved through a ruggedisation process, where the display is laminated with cover glasses to become a more robust structure. The ruggedisation process can in itself cause stresses in the display and this can lead to delamination failures during the lamination process, during qualification testing or in-service. Controlling the magnitude of stress in a display during the lamination process is of course very important and this depends highly on the materials used. This paper discusses the use of finite element analysis to investigate the use of different materials in the lamination process and how such materials can affect the stress magnitude in the display.

Occupant interaction with signage systems is being introduced into evacuation simulations through the newly developed concept of the Visibility Catchment Area or VCA. In this article, we describe the concept of VCA and how it has been extended to incorporate the presence of physical obstructions and termination distance. The VCA concept is then linked to a prototype behavior model intended to represent the occupant's interaction with the signage system. The functionality and performance of the newly developed model is then demonstrated through the simulation of various evacuation scenarios within a hypothetical supermarket layout

Signage systems are widely used in buildings to provide information for wayfinding, thereby assisting in navigation during normal circulation of pedestrians and, more importantly, exiting information during emergencies. An important consideration in determining the effectiveness of signs is establishing the region from which the sign is visible to occupants, the so-called Visibility Catchment Area (VCA). This paper attempts to factor into the determination of the VCA of signs, the observation angle of the observer using both experimental and theoretical analysis.

Micro-electronic displays are sensitive devices and its performance is easily affected by external environmental factors. To enable the display to perform in extreme conditions, the device must be structurally strengthened, the effects of this packaging process was investigated. A thermo-mechanical finite element analysis was used to discover potential problems in the packaging process and to improve the overall design of the device. The main concern from the analysis predicted that displacement of the borosilicate glass and the Y stress of the adhesive are important. Using this information a design which reduced the variation of displacement and kept the stress to a minimum was suggested

The performance enhancement of AMLCD's has been hindered with problems encountered during the curing process, such as window framing and de-lamination of the glass and adhesive. A thermo-mechanical analysis using FEA was conducted to help optimise the design of the rugged display and enhance the optical performance.

This study attempts to factor into the determination of the VCA of signs, the observation angle of the observer. In building regulations, it is implicitly assumed that the VCA is independent of the observation angle. A theoretical model is developed to explain the relationship between the VCA and observation angle and experimental trials are performed in order to assess the validity of this model. The experimental findings demonstrate a consistency with the theoretical model. Given this result, the functionality of a comprehensive evacuation model is extended in accordance with the assumptions on which the theoretical model is based and is then demonstrated using several examples

The passenger response time distributions adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)in their assessment of the assembly time for passanger ships involves two key assumptions. The first is that the response time distribution assumes the form of a uniform random distribution and the second concerns the actual response times. These two assumptions are core to the validity of the IMO analysis but are not based on real data, being the recommendations of an IMO committee. In this paper, response time data collected from assembly trials conducted at sea on a real passanger vessel using actual passangers are presented and discussed. Unlike the IMO specified response time distributions, the data collected from these trials displays a log-normal distribution, similar to that found in land based environments. Based on this data, response time distributions for use in the IMO assesmbly for the day and night scenarios are suggested

The parallelization of real-world compute intensive Fortran application codes is generally not a trivial task. If the time to complete the parallelization is to be significantly reduced then an environment is needed that will assist the programmer in the various tasks of code parallelization. In this paper the authors present a code parallelization environment where a number of tools that address the main tasks such as code parallelization, debugging and optimization are available. The ParaWise and CAPO parallelization tools are discussed which enable the near automatic parallelization of real-world scientific application codes for shared and distributed memory-based parallel systems. As user involvement in the parallelization process can introduce errors, a relative debugging tool (P2d2) is also available and can be used to perform nearly automatic relative debugging of a program that has been parallelized using the tools. A high quality interprocedural dependence analysis as well as user-tool interaction are also highlighted and are vital to the generation of efficient parallel code and in the optimization of the backtracking and speculation process used in relative debugging. Results of benchmark and real-world application codes parallelized are presented and show the benefits of using the environment

This paper investigated the thermal design of the light emitting diode (LED)onto the board and its packaging. The LED was a 6-lead MultiLED with three chips designed for LCD backlighting and other lighting purposes. A 3D finite element model of this LED was built up and thermal analysis was carried out using the multi physics software package PHYSICA. The modeling results were presented as temperature distributions in each LED, and the predicted junction temperature was used for thermal resistance calculation. The results for the board structure indicated that (1) removing the foil attach decreased the thermal resistance, (2) Increasing the copper foil thickness reduced the thermal resistance. package design indicated that the SMT designed LED with integrated slug gave lower thermal resistance. Pb-free solder material gave lower thermal resistance and junction temperature when compared with conductive adhesive
