Theoretical and experimental studies of cross correlation techniques applied to non-restrictive velocity measurement of pneumatically conveyed solids using ring-shaped electrodynamic flow sensors are presented. In-depth studies of the electrodynamic sensing mechanism, and also of the spatial sensitivity and spatial filtering properties of the sensor are included, together with their relationships to measurement accuracy and the effects of solids' velocity profiles. The experimental evaluation of a 53 mm bore sensing head is described, including trials using a calibrated pneumatic conveyor circulating pulverized fuel and cement. Comparisons of test results with the mathematical models of the sensor are used to identify important aspects of the instrument design. Off-line test results obtained using gravity-fed solids flow show that the system repeatability is within +/-0.5% over the velocity range of 2-4 m s(-1) for volumetric concentrations of solids no greater than 0.2%. Results obtained in the pilot-plant trials demonstrate that the system is capable of achieving repeatability better than +/-2% and linearity within +/-2% over the velocity range 20-40 m s(-1) for volumetric concentrations of solids in the range 0.01-0.44%.

A particle swarm optimisation approach is used to determine the accuracy and experimental relevance of six disparate cure kinetics models. The cure processes of two commercially available thermosetting polymer materials utilised in microelectronics manufacturing applications have been studied using a differential scanning calorimetry system. Numerical models have been fitted to the experimental data using a particle swarm optimisation algorithm which enables the ultimate accuracy of each of the models to be determined. The particle swarm optimisation approach to model fitting proves to be relatively rapid and effective in determining the optimal coefficient set for the cure kinetics models. Results indicate that the singlestep autocatalytic model is able to represent the curing process more accurately than more complex model, with ultimate accuracy likely to be limited by inaccuracies in the processing of the experimental data.

A modified experimental procedure for the synthesis of MESG (2-amino-6-mercapto-7-methylpurine ribonucleoside) 1 has been successfully performed and its full characterization is presented. High resolution ESI(+)-MSMS indicates both the nucleoside bond cleavage as the main fragmentation in the gas phase and a possible SN1 mechanism. Ab initio transition state calculations based on the blue print transition state support this mechanistic rationale and discard an alternative SN2 mechanism. Assays using purine nucleoside phosphorylase (PNP) enzyme (human and M. tuberculosis sources) indicate its efficiency in the phosphorolysis of MESG and allow the quantitative determination of inorganic phosphate in real time assay.

Particle degradation can be a significant issue in particulate solids handling and processing, particularly in pneumatic conveying systems, in which high-speed impact is usually the main contributory factor leading to changes in particle size distribution (comparing the material to its virgin state). However, other factors may strongly influence particles breakage as well, such as particle concentrations, bend geometry,and hardness of pipe material. Because of such complex influences, it is often very difficult to predict particle degradation accurately and rapidly for industrial processes. In this article, a general method for evaluating particle degradation due to high-speed impacts is described, in which the breakage properties of particles are quantified using what are known as "breakage matrices". Rather than a pilot-size test facility, a bench-scale degradation tester has been used. Some advantages of using the bench-scale tester are briefly explored. Experimental determination of adipic acid has been carried out for a range of impact velocities in four particle size categories. Subsequently, particle breakage matrices of adipic acid have been established for these impact velocities. The experimental results show that the "breakage matrices" of particles is an effective and easy method for evaluation of particle degradation due to high-speed impacts. The possibility of the "breakage matrices" approach being applied to a pneumatic conveying system is also explored by a simulation example.
