Vacuum arc remelting (VAR) aims at production of high quality, segregation-free alloys. The quality of the produced ingots depends on the operating conditions which could be monitored and analyzed using numerical modelling. The remelting process uniformity is controlled by critical medium scale time variations of the order 1-100 s, which are physically initiated by the droplet detachment and the large scale arc motion at the top of liquid pool [1,2]. The newly developed numerical modelling tools are addressing the 3-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic and thermal behaviour in the liquid zone and the adjacent ingot, electrode and crucible.

A 3D time-dependent model of the VAR process has been developed using CFD techniques. The model solves the coupled field equations for fluid flow, heat transfer (including phase change) and electromagnetic field, for both the electrode and the ingot. The motion of the electic arc 'preferred spot' can be specified based on observations. Correlations are sought between the local gap height, resulting from instantaneous liquid pool surface shape and electrode tip shape, and the arc motion. The detailed behaviour of the melting film on the electrode tip is studies using a spectral free surface technique, which allows investigation of the drops' detachment and drip shorts.

A new experimental procedure has been implemented and a prototype of a novel adhesion tester has been designed and constructed using rapid prototyping technology. A tumbler mixer has been designed and constructed for coating powder material onto a crisp substrate. In the impact separation experiment, the amount of powder detached from one side of a crisp substrate by the effect of impact forces (48g, 77g, 102g) generated by the tester was measured. Salt particles with different size fractions (63-125, 125-180, and 180-250m) and several flavoring powders have been tested extensively. By plotting the detachment versus impact force, the difference obtained between adhesion strength of different flavoring powders (which is a strong function of particle size and surface oil content of the crisp) has been discussed. The detachment rate of salt particles increased (from 1% to 2%) with particle size (from 63 to 250m) in the presence of oil on the surface of the crisp substrate and decreased rapidly with the increase in the amount of oil applied (from 0 to 1%).

Newly developed numerical modelling tools are described, which address the 3-dimensional (3D) time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic and thermal behaviour in the liquid pool zone in the adjacent ingot, electrode and crucible. The melting electrode film flow and the droplet detachment initiation are simulated separately by an axisymmetric transient model.

The aim of the current study was the development of theophylline buccal adhesive tablets using direct compression. Buccal adhesive formulations were developed using a water soluble resin with various combinations of mucoadhesive polymers. The prepared theophylline tablets were evaluated for tensile strength, swelling capacity and ex vivo mucoadhesion performance. Ex vivo mucoadhesion was assessed using porcine gingival tissue and the peak detachment forces were found to be suitable for a buccal adhesive tablet with a maximum of 1.5N approximately. The effect of formulation composition on the release pattern was also investigated. Most formulations showed theophylline controlled release profiles depended on the grade and polymer ratio. The release mechanisms were found to fit Peppas' kinetic model over a period of 5h. In general the majority of the developed formulations presented suitable adhesion and controlled drug release. The firm adhesion of flavouring particles onto crisp surfaces during coating processes is a major concern in the snack production industry. Detachment of flavouring powders from products during handling and production stages can lead to substantial financial losses for the industry, in terms of variable flavour performance and extended cleaning down time of fugitive particle build-up on process equipment. Understanding the adhesion strength of applied bulk particulates used for flavouring formulations will help analysts to evaluate the efficiency of coating processes and potentially enable them to assess the adhesion strength of newly formulated flavouring powder prior to commitment to full scale plant trials. A rapid prototype of a novel adhesion tester has been designed and constructed. The apparatus operates according to the principle of impact force acting on particles attached to the surface of the food substrate. The main component is a circular plate to which four sample holders are attached and which is subjected to vertical travel down a guide shaft. Several flavouring powders have been tested extensively. By plotting the detachment versus impact force, the difference obtained between adhesion strength of different flavouring powders (which is a strong function of particle size) has been discussed.
