One thing is (a) to develop a system that handles some task to one's satisfaction, and also has a universally recognized myrthful side to its output. Another thing is (b) to provide an analysis of why you are getting such a byproduct. Yet another thing is (c) to develop a model that incorporates reflection about some phenomenon in humor for its own sake. This paper selects for discussion especially Alibi, going on to describe the preliminaries of Columbus. The former, which fits in (a), is a planner with an explanatory capability. It invents pretexts. It's no legal defense, but it is relevant to evidential thinking in AI & Law. Some of the output pretext are myrthful. Not in the sense they are silly: they are not. A key factor seems to be the very alacrity at explaining out detail after detail of globally damning evidence. I attempt a reanalysis of Alibi in respect of (b). As to Columbus, it fits instead in (c). We introduce here the basics of this (unimplemented) model, developed to account for a sample text in parody.

This paper presents the findings of an experiment which looked at the effects of performing applied tasks (action learning) prior to the completion of the theoretical learning of these tasks (explanation-based learning), and vice-versa. The applied tasks took the form of laboratories for the Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) course, theoretical learning was via lectures.

Flexible Circuit Boards (FPCs) are now being widely used in the electronic industries especially in the areas of electronic packages. Due to European lead-free legislation which has been implemented since July 2006, electronic packaging industries have to switch to use in the lead-free soldering technology. This change has posed a number of challenges in terms of development of lead-free solders and compatible substrates. An increase of at least 20-50 degrees in the reflow temperature is a concern and substantial research is required to investigate a sustainable design of flexible circuit boards as carrier substrates. This paper investigates a number of design variables such as copper conductor width, type of substrate materials, effect of insulating materials, etc. Computer modeling has been used to investigate thermo-mechanical behavior, and reliability, of flexible substrates after they have been subjected to a lead- free solder processing. Results will show particular designs that behave better for a particular rise in peak reflow temperature. Also presented will be the types of failures that can occur in these substrates and what particular materials are more reliable.

A series of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) [pNIPAM]-based homo-polymer and co-polymer microgel particles were prepared by surfactant-free emulsion polymerisation. The co-monomers were acrylic acid. 4-vinylpyridine. butyl acrylate, 4-vinylbiphenyl and vinyl laurate. Co-monomers were added at a concentration of 10% (w/w) relative to the base monomer pNIPAM for the preparation of each co-polymer microgel. The co-monomers chosen vary by their organic chain length, polarity and pH sensitivity, as these should influence how the particles behave in aqueous and non-aqueous solvents. The effect of adding different types of co-monomer into the microgel structure was investigated with respect to their dispersibility in different solvents. These microgel particles have shown useful application in the removal of water from biodiesel prepared from rape seed. Karl Fischer experiments showed that microgel particles can be used to reduce the water content in biodiesel to an acceptable level for incorporation into internal combustion engines. Purpose: A novel methodology has been introduced to effectively coat intravascular stents with sirolimus-loaded polymeric microparticles. Methods: Dry powders of the microparticulate formulation, consisting of non-erodible polymers, were produced by a supercritical, aerosol, solvent extraction system (ASES). A design of experiment (DOE) approach was conducted on the independent variables, such as organic/CO2 phase volume ratio, polymer weight and stirring-rate, while regression analysis was utilized to interpret the influence of all operational parameters on the dependent variable of particle size. The dry powders, so formed, entered an electric field created by corona charging and were sprayed on the earthed metal stent. Furthermore, the thermal stability of sirolimus was investigated to define the optimum conditions for fusion to the metal surfaces. Results: The electrostatic dry powder deposition technology (EDPDT) was used on the metal strut followed by fusion to produce uniform, reproducible and accurate coatings. The coated stents exhibited sustained release profiles over 25 days, similar to commercial products. EDPDT-coated stents displayed significant reduced platelet adhesion. Conclusions: EDPDT appeared to be a robust accurate and reproducible technology to coat eluting stents.

This paper describes the condition of a reinforced concrete balustrade consisting of some 1000 individual beam elements all exposed similarly to the hostile marine environment of the North Sea at Arbroath, Scotland since 1943. A comparison is made of the condition of the original construction with the condition of repairs carried out in 1968 and in 1993. It is shown that the 1943 construction shows very little corrosion-induced cracking and little rust staining even though it does not appear to be of high construction quality. Only a very low percentage of the balustrade beams have been replaced. In contrast the beam installed in 1968 and later in 1993 show very considerable and large concrete cracks directly attributable to the corrosion of the longitudinal reinforcement, even though the concrete is of a higher quality and density. A detailed condition survey and statistics of crack sizes are presented in the paper. It is found that the higher corrosion resistance of the 1943 concrete is generally consistent with the concrete electrical resistivity measurements but the degree of corrosion of the reinforcing bars is inconsistent with chloride penetration measurements. The results are compared with the very few observations available in the literature for ageing concrete structures in marine environments. The results cast doubt on the conventional wisdom that chloride content at the reinforcement correlates well with reinforcement corrosion.
