This paper considers the problem of sequencing n jobs in a three-machine flow shop with the objective of minimizing the makespan, which is the completion time of the last job. An O(n log n) time heuristic that is based on Johnson's algorithm is presented. It is shown to generate a schedule with length at most 5/3 times that of an optimal schedule, thereby reducing the previous best available worst-case performance ratio of 2. An application to the general flow shop is also discussed.

We consider two “minimum”NP-hard job shop scheduling problems to minimize the makespan. In one of the problems every job has to be processed on at most two out of three available machines. In the other problem there are two machines, and a job may visit one of the machines twice. For each problem, we define a class of heuristic schedules in which certain subsets of operations are kept as blocks on the corresponding machines. We show that for each problem the value of the makespan of the best schedule in that class cannot be less than 3/2 times the optimal value, and present algorithms that guarantee a worst-case ratio of 3/2.

This paper considers the problem of sequencing n jobs in a two‐machine re‐entrant shopwith the objective of minimizing the maximum completion time. The shop consists of twomachines, M1 and M2 , and each job has the processing route (M1 , M2 , M1 ). An O(n log n)time heuristic is presented which generates a schedule with length at most 4/3 times that ofan optimal schedule, thereby improving the best previously available worst‐case performanceratio of 3/2.

The manual effort required to convert sequential computational mechanics programs into a useful, scalable parallel form is considerable. Tools that can assist in the conversion process are clearly required. Computer aided parallelisation tools (CAPTools) have been developed to generate efficient parallel code for real world structured grid application codes such as Computational Fluid Dynamics. Automatable single-program multi-data (SPMD) overlapping domain decomposition (DD) techniques established for structured grid codes have been adapted by the authors to manually parallelise unstructured mesh applications. Inspector loops have been used to provide generic techniques for the run-time support necessary to extend the capabilities of CAPTools to automatic implementation of SPMD DD techniques in the parallelisation of unstructured mesh codes. In this paper, we study a problem of scheduling and batching on two machines in a flow-shop and open-shop environment. Each machine processes operations in batches, and the processing time of a batch is the sum of the processing times of the operations in that batch. A setup time, which depends only on the machine, is required before a batch is processed on a machine, and all jobs in a batch remain at the machine until the entire batch is processed. The aim is to make batching and sequencing decisions, which specify a partition of the jobs into batches on each machine, and a processing order of the batches on each machine, respectively, so that the makespan is minimized. The flow-shop problem is shown to be strongly NP-hard. We demonstrate that there is an optimal solution with the same batches on the two machines; we refer to these as consistent batches. A heuristic is developed that selects the best schedule among several with one, two, or three consistent batches, and is shown to have a worst-case performance ratio of 4/3. For the open-shop, we show that the problem is NP-hard in the ordinary sense. By proving the existence of an optimal solution with one, two or three consistent batches, a close relationship is established with the problem of scheduling two or three identical parallel machines to minimize the makespan. This allows a pseudo-polynomial algorithm to be derived, and various heuristic methods to be suggested.

This paper considers a variant of the classical problem of minimizing makespan in a two-machine flow shop. In this variant, each job has three operations, where the first operation must be performed on the first machine, the second operation can be performed on either machine but cannot be preempted, and the third operation must be performed on the second machine. The NP-hard nature of the problem motivates the design and analysis of approximation algorithms. It is shown that a schedule in which the operations are sequenced arbitrarily, but without inserted machine idle time, has a worst-case performance ratio of 2. Also, an algorithm that constructs four schedules and selects the best is shown to have a worst-case performance ratio of 3/2. A polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) is also presented.

This paper presents a numerical study of the Reynolds number and scaling effects in microchannel flows. The configuration includes a rectangular, high-aspect ratio microchannel with heat sinks, similar to an experimental setup. Water at ambient temperature is used as a coolant fluid and the source of heating is introduced via electronic cartridges in the solids. Two channel heights, measuring 0.3 mm and 1 mm are considered at first. The Reynolds number varies in a range of 500-2200, based on the hydraulic diameter. Simulations are focused on the Reynolds number and channel height effects on the Nusselt number. It is found that the Reynolds number has noticeable influences on the local Nusselt number distributions, which are in agreement with other studies. The numerical predictions of the dimensionless temperature of the fluid agree fairly well with experimental measurements; however the dimensionless temperature of the solid does exhibit a significant discrepancy near the channel exit, similar to those reported by other researchers. The present study demonstrates that there is a significant scaling effect at small channel height, typically 0.3 mm, in agreement with experimental observations. This scaling effect has been confirmed by three additional simulations being carried out at channel heights of 0.24 mm, 0.14 mm and 0.1 mm, respectively. A correlation between the channel height and the normalized Nusselt number is thus proposed, which agrees well with results presented.

In this note, we consider the scheduling problem of minimizing the sum of the weighted completion times on a single machine with one non-availability interval on the machine under the non-resumable scenario. Together with a recent 2-approximation algorithm designed by Kacem [I. Kacem, Approximation algorithm for the weighted flow-time minimization on a single machine with a fixed non-availability interval, Computers & Industrial Engineering 54 (2008) 401–410], this paper is the first successful attempt to develop a constant ratio approximation algorithm for this problem. We present two approaches to designing such an algorithm. Our best algorithm guarantees a worst-case performance ratio of 2+ε. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
