This paper describes how modeling technology has been used in providing fatigue life time data of two flip-chip models. Full-scale three-dimensional modeling of flip-chips under cyclic thermal loading has been combined with solder joint stand-off height prediction to analyze the stress and strain conditions in the two models. The Coffin-Manson empirical relationship is employed to predict the fatigue life times of the solder interconnects. In order to help designers in selecting the underfill material and the printed circuit board, the Young's modulus and the coefficient of thermal expansion of the underfill, as well as the thickness of the printed circuit boards are treated as variable parameters. Fatigue life times are therefore calculated over a range of these material and geometry parameters. In this paper we will also describe how the use of micro-via technology may affect fatigue life

This paper suggests a possible framework for the encapsulation of the decision making process for the Waterime project. The final outcome maybe a computerised model, but the process advocated is not prescriptive, and involves the production of a "paper model" as mediating representation between the knowledge acquired and any computerised system. This paper model may suffice in terms of the project's goals.

In this paper, a method for the integration of several numerical analytical techniques that are used in microsystems design and failure analysis is presented. The analytical techniques are categorized into four groups in the discussion, namely the high-fidelity analytical tools, i.e. finite element (FE) method, the fast analytical tools referring to reduced order modeling (ROM); the optimization tools, and probability based analytical tools. The characteristics of these four tools are investigated. The interactions between the four tools are discussed and a methodology for the coupling of these four tools is offered. This methodology consists of three stages, namely reduced order modeling, deterministic optimization and probabilistic optimization. Using this methodology, a case study for optimization of a solder joint is conducted. It is shown that these analysis techniques have mutual relationship of interaction and complementation. Synthetic application of these techniques can fully utilize the advantages of these techniques and satisfy various design requirements. The case study shows that the coupling method of different tools provided by this paper is effective and efficient and it is highly relevant in the design and reliability analysis of microsystems

Rhodanines (2-thio-4-oxothiazolidines) are synthetic small molecular weight organic molecules with diverse applications in biochemistry, medicinal chemistry, photochemistry, coordination chemistry and industry. The X-ray crystal structure determination of two rhodanine derivatives, namely (I), 3-aminorhodanine [3-amino-2-thio-4-oxothiazolidine], C3H4N2OS2, and (II) 3-methylrhodanine [3-methyl-2-thio-4-oxothiazolidine], C4H5NOS2, have been conducted at 100 K. I crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with unit cell parameters a = 9.662(2), b = 9.234(2), c = 13.384(2) angstrom, beta = 105.425(3)degrees, V = 1151.1(3) angstrom(3), Z = 8 (2 independent molecules per asymmetric unit), density (calculated) = 1.710 mg/m(3), absorption coefficient = 0.815 mm(-1). II crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Iba2 with unit cell a = 20.117(4), b = 23.449(5), c = 7.852(2) angstrom, V = 3703.9(12) angstrom(3), Z = 24 (three independent molecules per asymmetric unit), density (calculated) = 1.584 mg/m(3), absorption coefficient 0.755 mm(-1). For I in the final refinement cycle the data/restraints/parameter ratios were 2639/0/161, goodness-of-fit on F-2 = 0.934, final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] were R1 = 0.0299, wR2 = 0.0545 and R indices (all data) R1 = 0.0399, wR2 = 0.0568. The largest difference peak and hole were 0.402 and -0.259 e angstrom(-3). For II in the final refinement cycle the data/restraints/parameter ratios were 3372/1/221, goodness-of-fit on F(2) = 0.950, final R indices [I > 2sigma(I)] were R1 = 0.0407, wR2 = 0.1048 and R indices (all data) R1 = 0.0450, wR2 = 0.1088. The absolute structure parameter = 0.19(9) and largest difference peak and hole 0.934 and -0.301 e angstrom(-3). Details of the geometry of the five molecules (two for I and three for II) and the crystal structures are fully discussed. Corresponding features of the molecular geometry are highly consistent and firmly establish the geometry of the rhodanine

The diversity gains achievable in the generalised distributed antenna system with cooperative users (GDAS-CU) are considered. A GDAS-CU is comprised of M largely separated access points (APs) at one side of the link, and N geographically closed user terminals (UTs) at the other side. The UTs are collaborating together to enhance the system performance, where an idealised message sharing among the UTs is assumed. First, geometry-based network models are proposed to describe the topology of a GDAS-CU. The mean cross-correlation coefficients of signals received from non-collocated APs and UTs are calculated based on the network topology and the correlation models derived from the empirical data. The analysis is also extendable to more general scenarios where the APs are placed in a clustered form due to the constraints of street layout or building structure. Subsequently, a generalised signal attenuation model derived from several stochastic ray-tracing-based pathloss models is applied to describe the power-decaying pattern in urban built-up areas, where the GDAS-CU may be deployed. Armed with the cross-correlation and pathloss model preliminaries, an intrinsic measure of cooperative diversity obtainable from a GDAS-CU is then derived, which is the number of independent fading channels that can be averaged over to detect symbols. The proposed analytical framework would provide critical insight into the degree of possible performance improvement when combining multiple copies of the received signal in such systems.

This paper is part of a major project about the Northern Cape Land Reform and Advocacy (NCLRA) programme being implemented by FARM-Africa* in South Africa. The NCLRA programme had initiated a financial mechanism to help poor communities to get access to finance and training in order to enable them to make better use of their newly-acquired land. One prominent aspect of the programme is the implementation of Livestock Banks, or the use of animals as financial products. The paper provides an analytical framework with which to evaluate the effectiveness of Livestock Banks in the poor communities of the Northern Cape in South Africa. It focuses on the design, implementation and future of Livestock Banks. The paper argues that Livestock Banks need to be reformed and enhanced if they are to continue to play a key role in the goal of creating financial and economic value in Africa, particularly when the primary objective is simultaneously to help reduce poverty. Purpose: To develop an improved mathematical model for the prediction of dose accuracy of Dosators - based upon the geometry of the machine in conjunction with measured flow properties of the powder. Methods: A mathematical model has been created, based on a analytical method of differential slices - incorporating measured flow properties. The key flow properties of interest in this investigation were: flow function, effective angle of wall friction, wall adhesion, bulk density, stress ratio K and permeability. To simulate the real process and (very importantly) validate the model, a Dosator test-rig has been used to measure the forces acting on the Dosator during the filling stage, the force required to eject the dose and the dose weight. Results: Preliminary results were obtained from the Dosator test-rig. Figure 1 [Omitted] shows the dose weight for different depths to the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and different levels of pre-compaction of the powder bed. A strong influence over dose weight arising from the proximity between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed at the end of the stroke and the conditions of the powder bed has been established. Conclusions: The model will provide a useful tool to predict dosing accuracy and, thus, optimise the future design of Dosator based equipment technology – based on measured bulk properties of the powder to be handled. Another important factor (with a significant influence) on Dosator processes, is the condition of the powder bed and the clearance between the Dosator and the bottom of the powder bed.

It has been shown that remote monitoring of pulmonary activity can be achieved using ultra-wideband (UWB) systems, which shows promise in home healthcare, rescue, and security applications. In this paper, we first present a multi-ray propagation model for UWB signal, which is traveling through the human thorax and is reflected on the air/dry-skin/fat/muscle interfaces. A geometry-based statistical channel model is then developed for simulating the reception of UWB signals in the indoor propagation environment. This model enables replication of time-varying multipath profiles due to the displacement of a human chest. Subsequently, a UWB distributed cognitive radar system (UWB-DCRS) is developed for the robust detection of chest cavity motion and the accurate estimation of respiration rate. The analytical framework can serve as a basis in the planning and evaluation of future measurement programs. We also provide a case study on how the antenna beamwidth affects the estimation of respiration rate based on the proposed propagation models and system architecture
