The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the potential of the EXODUS evacuation model in building environments. The latest PC/workstation version of EXODUS is described and is also applied to a large hypothetical supermarket/restaurant complex measuring 50 m x 40 m. A range of scenarios is presented where population characteristics (such as size, individual travel speeds, and individual response times), and enclosure configuration characteristics (such as number of exits, size of exits, and opening times of exits) are varied. The results demonstrate a wide range of occupant behavior including overtaking, queuing, redirection, and conflict avoidance. Evacuation performance is measured by a number of model predicted parameters including individual exit flow rates, overall evacuation flow rates, total evacuation time, average evacuation time per occupant, average travel distance, and average wait time. The simulations highlight the profound impact that variations in individual travel speeds and occupant response times have in determining the overall evacuation performance. 1. An MHD flow is considered which is relevant to horizontal Bridgman technique for crystal growth from a melt. In the unidirectional parallel flow approximation an analytical solution is found accounting for the finite rectangular cross section of the channel in the case of a vertical magnetic field. Numerical pseudo-spectral solutions are used in the cases of arbitrary magnetic field and gravity vector orientations. The vertical magnetic field (parallel to the gravity) is found to be he most effective to damp the flow, however, complicated flow profiles with "overvelocities" in the comers are typical in the case of a finite cross-section channel. The temperature distribution is shown to be dependent on the flow profile. The linear stability of the flow is investigated by use of the Chebyshev pseudospectral method. For the case of an infinite width channel the transversal rolls instability is investigated, and for the finite cross-section channel the longitudinal rolls instability is considered. The critical Gr number values are computed in the dependence of the Ha number and the wave number or the aspect ratio in the case of finite section.

In this paper, the effects of the solder reflow process on the reliability of anisotropic conductive film (ACF) interconnections for flip chip on flex (FCOF) applications are investigated. Experiments as well as computer modeling methods have been used. In the experiments, it was found that the contact resistance of ACF joints increased after the subsequent reflow process, and the magnitude of this increase was strongly correlated to the peak temperature of the reflow profile. Nearly 40% of the joints were opened (i.e. lifted away from the pad) after the reflow process with 260 °C peak temperature while no opening was observed when the peak temperature was 210 °C. It is believed that the CTE mismatch between the polymer particle and the adhesive matrix is the main cause of this contact degradation. It was also found that the ACF joints after the reflow process with 210 °C peak temperature showed a high ability to resist water absorption under steady state 85 °C/85%RH conditions, probably because the curing degree of the ACF was improved during the reflow process. To give a good understanding, a 3D model of an ACF joint structure was built and finite element analysis was used to predict the stress distribution in the conductive particles, adhesive matrix and metal pads during the reflow process.

Empirical data on the life experiences of contemporary school-age lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) young people in Britain remains somewhat sparse. This paper reports the preliminary findings of a study conducted at a recently-initiated LGB youth Summer School. To further an appreciation of issues of concern to today's LGB teenagers, in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 Summer School participants (five female and five male, aged 15-18 years). The aim was to elicit their views and experiences relating to their need for support such as that offered by the Summer School. Themes drawn from participants' interviews are presented. Key issues included: being positioned as different by their majority heterosexual peers; feelings of isolation and loneliness in their peer groups and families; difficulties in finding others like themselves for companionship; and the importance of meeting more LGB people of their own age.
