The space–time dynamics of rigid inhomogeneities (inclusions) free to move in a randomly fluctuating fluid bio-membrane is derived and numerically simulated as a function of the membrane shape changes. Both vertically placed (embedded) inclusions and horizontally placed (surface) inclusions are considered. The energetics of the membrane, as a two-dimensional (2D) meso-scale continuum sheet, is described by the Canham–Helfrich Hamiltonian, with the membrane height function treated as a stochastic process. The diffusion parameter of this process acts as the link coupling the membrane shape fluctuations to the kinematics of the inclusions. The latter is described via Ito stochastic differential equation. In addition to stochastic forces, the inclusions also experience membrane-induced deterministic forces. Our aim is to simulate the diffusion-driven aggregation of inclusions and show how the external inclusions arrive at the sites of the embedded inclusions. The model has potential use in such emerging fields as designing a targeted drug delivery system.

This paper considers a special class of flow-shop problems, known as the proportionate flow shop. In such a shop, each job flows through the machines in the same order and has equal processing times on the machines. The processing times of different jobs may be different. It is assumed that all operations of a job may be compressed by the same amount which will incur an additional cost. The objective is to minimize the makespan of the schedule together with a compression cost function which is non-decreasing with respect to the amount of compression. For a bicriterion problem of minimizing the makespan and a linear cost function, an O(n log n) algorithm is developed to construct the Pareto optimal set. For a single criterion problem, an O(n2) algorithm is developed to minimize the sum of the makespan and compression cost. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

This paper describes a methodology for deploying flexible dynamic configuration into embedded systems whilst preserving the reliability advantages of static systems. The methodology is based on the concept of decision points (DP) which are strategically placed to achieve fine-grained distribution of self-management logic to meet application-specific requirements. DP logic can be changed easily, and independently of the host component, enabling self-management behavior to be deferred beyond the point of system deployment. A transparent Dynamic Wrapper mechanism (DW) automatically detects and handles problems arising from the evaluation of self-management logic within each DP and ensures that the dynamic aspects of the system collapse down to statically defined default behavior to ensure safety and correctness despite failures. Dynamic context management contributes to flexibility, and removes the need for design-time binding of context providers and consumers, thus facilitating run-time composition and incremental component upgrade.

Various models for predicting discharge rates have been developed over the last four decades by many research workers (notably Beverloo [1], Johanson [2], Brown [3], Carleton [4], Crewdson [5], Nedderman [6], Gu [7].). In many cases these models offer comparable approaches to the prediction of discharge rates of bulk particulates from storage equipment when solely gravity is acting to initiate flow (since they invariably consider the use of mass-flow design equipment). The models that have been developed consider a wide range of bulk particulates (coarse, incompressible, fine, cohesive) and most contemporary works have incorporated validation against test programmes. Research currently underway at The Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, University of Greenwich, has considered the relative performance of these models with respect to a range of bulk properties and with particular focus upon the flexibility of the models to cater for different geometrical factors for vessels.
