Solder is often used as an adhesive to attach optical fibers to a circuit board. In this proceeding we will discuss efforts to model the motion of an optical fiber during the wetting and solidification of the adhesive solder droplet. The extent of motion is determined by several competing forces, during three “stages” of solder joint formation. First, capillary forces of the liquid phase control the fiber position. Second, during solidification, the presence of the liquid-solid-vapor triple line as well as a reduced liquid solder volume leads to a change in the net capillary force on the optical fiber. Finally, the solidification front itself impinges on the fiber. Publicly-available finite element models are used to calculate the time-dependent position of the solidification front and shape of the free surface.

Encapsulant curing using a Variable Frequency Microwave (VFM) system is analysed numerically. Thermosetting polymer encapsulant materials require an input of heat energy to initiate the cure process. In this article, the heating is considered to be performed by a novel microwave system, able to perform the curing process more rapidly than conventional techniques. Thermal stresses are induced when packages containing materials with differing coefficients of thermal expansion are heated, and cure stresses are induced as thermosetting polymer materials shrink during the cure process. These stresses are developed during processing and remain as residual stresses within the component after the manufacturing process is complete. As residual stresses will directly affect the reliability of the device, it is necessary to assess their magnitude and the effect on package reliability. A coupled multiphysics model has been developed to numercially analyse the microwave curing process. In order to obtain a usefully accurate model of this process, a holistic approach has been taken, in which the process is not considered to be a sequence of discrete steps, but as a complex coupled system. An overview of the implemented numerical model is presented, with particular focus paid to analysis of induced thermal stresses. Results showing distribution of stresses within an idealised microelectronics package are presented and discussed.

In this paper, computer modelling techniques are used to analyse the effects of globtops on the reliability of aluminium wirebonds in power electronics modules under cyclic thermal-mechanical loading conditions. The sensitivity of the wirehond reliability to the changes of the geometric and the material property parameters of wirebond globtop are evaluated and the optimal combination of the Young's modulus and the coefficient of thermal expansion have been predicted.

The Institute of Community Studies was set up by Michael Young in order to carry out research on politically relevant social issues, in a context free from direct political control. A research method was devised for it whereby researchers made their own values and objectives very explicit, while staying as close as possible in their reports to the concerns and language of respondents themselves. This method has often been criticized by professional sociologists: but it reflects quite well the nature of social knowledge. It has produced reports which help to increase public understanding of social processes, and provide useful guidance to policy makers. Professional sociology on the other hand has tried to develop a rigorously value-free method. As a result, though, it often seems to be tied implicitly to values shared among researchers but not more universally. Arguably this makes it harder for the general public to understand, and accept, its findings.

This article charts the development of the use of thin films of nanoparticulate WO3 and how they have been used to overcome problems associated with other photocatalytic materials and bulk WO3. Current technology is described and the authors' views on the outlook for future development is suggested.

Findings are presented from a longitudinal study of over 1,500 adolescents. Some were engaged in interventions aimed at reducing social disaffection. Participants completed measures of social-identification, academic self-concept and motivation, and social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. Consistent with our previous research, developmental trends in identity and self-concept were found - adolescents became more negative about some school-based factors and more positive about aspects of identity. Trends were less clear in the 120 adolescents receiving interventions. Findings demonstrate the importance of psychology in work with young people.
