Molecular dynamics has been employed to model the fracture of a twodimensional triangular atomic lattice. The N-body Sutton-Chen potential developed for fcc metals and its extended version (Rafii-Tabar and Sutton) for fcc random binary alloys were used for the interatomic interactions. It is shown that at low temperatures cleavage fractures can occur in both an elemental metal and an alloy. At elevated temperatures the nucleation of dislocations is shown to cause a brittle-to-ductile transition. For the brittle crack propagation in the elemental metal, crack propagation speeds have been computed for different stress rates, and a crack instability found to exist as the speed reaches a critical value of about 32% of the Rayleigh wave speed. For the random alloy, we find that the dislocation movement can be affected by the distorted lattice.

This paper describes a Framework for e-Learning and presents the findings of a study investigating whether the use of Blended Learning can fulfill or at least accommodate some of the human requirements presently neglected by current e-Learning systems. This study evaluates the in-house system: Teachmat, and discusses how the use of Blended Learning has become increasingly prevalent as a result of its enhancement and expansion, its relationship to the human and pedagogical issues, and both the positive and negative implications of this reality. Electrodeposition is a widely used technique for the fabrication of high aspect ratio microstructures. In recent years, much research has been focused within this area aiming to understand the physics behind the filling of high aspect ratio vias and trenches on substrates and in particular how they can be made without the formation of voids in the deposited material. This paper reports on the fundamental work towards the advancement of numerical algorithms that can predict the electrodeposition process in micron scaled features. Two different numerical approaches have been developed, which capture the motion of the deposition interface and 2-D simulations are presented for both methods under two deposition regimes: those where surface kinetics is governed by Ohm’s law and the Butler–Volmer equation, respectively. In the last part of this paper the modelling of acoustic forces and their subsequent impact on the deposition profile through convection is examined.
