We study two marked point process models based on the Cox process. These models are used to describe the probabilistic structure of the rainfall intensity process. Mathematical formulation of the models is described and some second-moment characteristics of the rainfall depth, and aggregated processes are considered. The derived second-order properties of the accumulated rainfall amounts at different levels of aggregation are used in order to examine the model fit. A brief data analysis is presented. We consider two “minimum”NP-hard job shop scheduling problems to minimize the makespan. In one of the problems every job has to be processed on at most two out of three available machines. In the other problem there are two machines, and a job may visit one of the machines twice. For each problem, we define a class of heuristic schedules in which certain subsets of operations are kept as blocks on the corresponding machines. We show that for each problem the value of the makespan of the best schedule in that class cannot be less than 3/2 times the optimal value, and present algorithms that guarantee a worst-case ratio of 3/2.

Computer based mathematical models describing the aircraft evacuation process have a vital role to play in aviation safety. However such models have a heavy dependency on real evacuation data in order to (a) identify the key processes and factors associated with evacuation, (b) quantify variables and parameters associated with the identified factors/processes and finally (c) validate the models. The Fire Safety Engineering Group of the University of Greenwich is undertaking a large data extraction exercise from three major data sources in order to address these issues. This paper describes the extraction and application of data from one of these sources - aviation accident reports. To aid in the storage and analysis of the raw data, a computer database known as AASK (aircraft accident statistics and knowledge) is under development. AASK is being developed to store human observational and anecdotal data contained in accident reports and interview transcripts. AASK comprises four component sub-databases. These consist of the ACCIDENT (crash details), FLIGHT ATTENDANT (observations and actions of the flight attendants), FATALS (details concerning passenger fatalities) and PAX (observations and accounts from individual passengers) databases. AASK currently contains information from 25 survivable aviation accidents covering the period 4 April 1977 to 6 August 1995, involving some 2415 passengers, 2210 survivors, 205 fatalities and accounts from 669 people. In addition to aiding the development of aircraft evacuation models, AASK is also being used to challenge some of the myths which proliferate in the aviation safety industry such as, passenger exit selection during evacuation, nature and frequency of seat jumping, speed of passenger response and group dynamics. AASK can also be used to aid in the development of a more comprehensive approach to conducting post accident interviews, and will eventually be used to store the data directly.

The performance of loadsharing algorithms for heterogeneous distributed systems is investigated by simulation. The systems considered are networks of workstations (nodes) which differ in processing power. Two parameters are proposed for characterising system heterogeneity, namely the variance and skew of the distribution of processing power among the network nodes. A variety of networks are investigated, with the same number of nodes and total processing power, but with the processing power distributed differently among the nodes. Two loadsharing algorithms are evaluated, at overall system loadings of 50% and 90%, using job response time as the performance metric. Comparison is made with the ideal situation of ‘perfect sharing’, where it is assumed that the communication delays are zero and that complete knowledge is available about job lengths and the loading at the different nodes, so that an arriving job can be sent to the node where it will be completed in the shortest time. The algorithms studied are based on those already in use for homogeneous networks, but were adapted to take account of system heterogeneity. Both algorithms take into account the differences in the processing powers of the nodes in their location policies, but differ in the extent to which they ‘discriminate’ against the slower nodes. It is seen that the relative performance of the two is strongly influenced by the system utilisation and the distribution of processing power among the nodes.

This work is concerned with the development of a numerical scheme capable of producing accurate simulations of sound propagation in the presence of a mean flow field. The method is based on the concept of variable decomposition, which leads to two separate sets of equations. These equations are the linearised Euler equations and the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. This paper concentrates on the development of numerical schemes for the linearised Euler equations that leads to a computational aeroacoustics (CAA) code. The resulting CAA code is a non-diffusive, time- and space-staggered finite volume code for the acoustic perturbation, and it is validated against analytic results for pure 1D sound propagation and 2D benchmark problems involving sound scattering from a cylindrical obstacle. Predictions are also given for the case of prescribed source sound propagation in a laminar boundary layer as an illustration of the effects of mean convection. A monotone scheme for finite volume simulation of magnetohydrodynamic internal flows at high Hartmann number is presented. The numerical stability is analysed with respect to the electromagnetic force. Standard central finite differences applied to finite volumes can only be numerically stable if the vector products involved in this force are computed with a scheme using a fully staggered grid. The electromagnetic quantities (electric currents and electric potential) must be shifted by half the grid size from the mechanical ones (velocity and pressure). An integral treatment of the boundary layers is used in conjunction with boundary conditions for electrically conducting walls. The simulations are performed with inhomogeneous electrical conductivities of the walls and reach high Hartmann numbers in three-dimensional simulations, even though a non-adaptive grid is used.

Different industrial induction melting processes involve free surface and melt-solid interface of the liquid metal subject to dynamic change during the technological operation. Simulation of the liquid metal dynamics requires to solve the non-linear, coupled hydrodynamic-electromagnetic-heat transfer problem accounting for the time development of the liquid metal free boundary with a suitable turbulent viscosity model. The present paper describes a numerical solution method applicable for various axisymmetric induction melting processes, such as, crucible with free top surface, levitation, semi-levitation, cold crucible and similar melting techniques. The presented results in the cases of semi-levitation and crucible with free top surface meltings demonstrate oscillating transient behaviour of the free metal surface indicating the presence of gravity-inertial-electromagnetic waves which are coupled to the internal fluid flow generated by both the rotational and potential parts of the electromagnetic force.

In this paper the many to many location routing problem is introduced, and its relationship to various problems in distribution management is emphasised. Useful mathematical formulations which can be easily extended to cater for other related problems are produced. Techniques for tackling this complex distribution problem are also outlined.

This article examines occupant behavior exhibited during evacuation conditions. This is based on a review of a wide range of published literature concerned with evacuation. Factors influencing evacuation performance can be categorized into four broad areas, namely, configurational, environmental, procedural, and, most importantly, behavioral. The contributory factors associated with each of the four influencing categories are examined in detail and it is suggested that these factors should be represented within evacuation models.

In this paper, we present some early work concerned with the development of a simple solid fuel combustion model incorporated within a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) framework. The model is intended for use in engineering applications of fire field modeling and represents an extension of this technique to situations involving the combustion of solid cellulosic fuels. A simple solid fuel combustion model consisting of a thermal pyrolysis model, a six flux radiation model and an eddy-dissipation model for gaseous combustion have been developed and implemented within the CFD code CFDS-FLOW3D. The model is briefly described and demonstrated through two applications involving fire spread in a compartment with a plywood lined ceiling. The two scenarios considered involve a fire in an open and closed compartment. The model is shown to be able to qualitatively predict behaviors similar to "flashover"—in the case of the open room—and "backdraft"— in the case of the initially closed room.

This paper considers the problem of sequencing n jobs in a two‐machine re‐entrant shopwith the objective of minimizing the maximum completion time. The shop consists of twomachines, M1 and M2 , and each job has the processing route (M1 , M2 , M1 ). An O(n log n)time heuristic is presented which generates a schedule with length at most 4/3 times that ofan optimal schedule, thereby improving the best previously available worst‐case performanceratio of 3/2.

Traffic policing and bandwidth management strategies at the User Network Interface (UNI) of an ATM network are investigated by simulation. The network is assumed to transport real time (RT) traffic like voice and video as well as non-real time (non-RT) data traffic. The proposed policing function, called the super leaky bucket (S-LB), is based on the leaky bucket (LB), but handles the three types of traffic differently according to their quality of service (QoS) requirements. Separate queues are maintained for RT and non-RT traffic. They are normally served alternately, but if the number of RT cells exceeds a threshold, it gets non-pre-emptive priority. Further increase of the RT queue causes low priority cells to be discarded. Non-RT cells are buffered and the sources are throttled back during periods of congestion. The simulations clearly demonstrate the advantages of the proposed strategy in providing improved levels of service (delay, jitter and loss) for all types of traffic.
