A 3D model of melt pool created by a moving arc type heat sources has been developed. The model solves the equations of turbulent fluid flow, heat transfer and electromagnetic field to demonstrate the flow behaviour phase-change in the pool. The coupled effects of buoyancy, capillary (Marangoni) and electromagnetic (Lorentz) forces are included within an unstructured finite volume mesh environment. The movement of the welding arc along the workpiece is accomplished via a moving co-ordinator system. Additionally a method enabling movement of the weld pool surface by fluid convection is presented whereby the mesh in the liquid region is allowed to move through a free surface. The surface grid lines move to restore equilibrium at the end of each computational time step and interior grid points then adjust following the solution of a Laplace equation.

A three dimensional finite volume, unstructured mesh method for dynamic fluid-structure interation is described. The broad approach is conventional in that the fluid and structure are solved sequentially. The pressure and viscous stresses from the flow algorithm provide load conditions for the solid algorithm, whilst at the fluid structure interface the deformed structure provides boundary condition from the structure to the fluid. The structure algorithm also provides the necessary mesh adaptation for the flow field, the effect of which is accounted for in the flow algorithm. The procedures described in this work have several novel features, namely: * a single mesh covering the entire domain. * a Navier Stokes flow. * a single FV-UM discretisation approach for both the flow and solid mechanics procedures. * an implicit predictor-corrector version of the Newmark algorithm. * a single code embedding the whole strategy. The procedure is illustrated for a three dimensional loaded cantilever in fluid flow.

Parallel processing techniques have been used in the past to provide high performance computing resources for activities such as Computational Fluid Dynamics. This is normally achieved using specialized hardware and software, the expense of which would be difficult to justify for many fire engineering practices. In this paper, we demonstrate how typical office-based PCs attached to a local area network have the potential to offer the benefits of parallel processing with minimal costs associated with the purchase of additional hardware or software. A dynamic load balancing scheme was devised to allow the effective use of the software on heterogeneous PC networks. This scheme ensured that the impact between the parallel processing task and other computer users on the network was minimized thus allowing practical parallel processing within a conventional office environment. General-purpose parallel processing for solving day-to-day industrial problems has been slow to develop, partly because of the lack of suitable hardware from well-established, mainstream computer manufacturers and suitably parallelized application software. The parallelization of a CFD-(computational fluid dynamics) flow solution code is known as ESAUNA. This code is part of SAUNA, a large CFD suite aimed at computing the flow around very complex aircraft configurations including complete aircraft. A novel feature of the SAUNA suite is that it is designed to use either block-structured hexahedral grids, unstructured tetrahedral grids, or a hybrid combination of both grid types. ESAUNA is designed to solve the Euler equations or the Navier-Stokes equations, the latter in conjunction with various turbulence models. Two fundamental parallelization concepts are used—namely, grid partitioning and encapsulation of communications. Grid partitioning is applied to both block-structured grid modules and unstructured grid modules. ESAUNA can also be coupled with other simulation codes for multidisciplinary computations such as flow simulations around an aircraft coupled with flutter prediction for transient flight simulations.

This work is concerned with the accurate computation of flow in a rapidly deforming liquid metal droplet, suspended in an AC magnetic field. Intense flow motion due to the induced electromagnetic force distorts dynamically the droplet envelope, which is initially spherical. The relative positional change between the liquid metal surface and the surrounding coil means that fluid flow and magnetic field computations need to be closely coupled. A spectral technique is used to solve this problem, which is assumed axisymmetric. The computed results are compared against a physical experiment and "ideal sphere" analytic solutions. A comparison between the "magnetic pressure" approximation and the full electromagnetic force solutions, shows fundamental differences; the full electromagnetic force solution is necessary for accurate results in most practical applications of this technique. The physical reason for the fundamental discrepancy is the difference in the electromagnetic force representation: only the gradient part of the full force is accounted for in the "magnetic pressure" approximation. Most lead bullion is refined by pyrometallurgical methods - this involves a serics of processes that remove the antimony (softening) silver (Parkes process), zinc (vacuum dezincing) and if need be, bismuth (Betterton-Kroll process). The first step, softening, removes the antimony, arsenic and tin by air oxidation in a furnace or by the Harris process. Next, in the Parkes process, zinc is added to the melt to remove the silver and gold. Insoluble zinc, silver and gold compounds are skimmed off from the melt surface. Excess zinc added during desilvering is removed from lead bullion using one of ghree methods: * Vacuum dezincing; * Chlorine dezincing; or * Harris dezincing. The present study concentrates on the Vacuum dezincing process for lead refining. The main aims of the research are to develop mathematical model(s), using Computational Fluid Dyanmics (CFD) a Surface Averaged Model (SAM), to predict the process behaviour under various operating conditions, thus providing detailed information of the process - insight into its reaction to changes of key operating parameters. Finally, the model will be used to optimise the process in terms of initial feed concentration, temperature, vacuum height cooling rate, etc.

In this paper, the application of a continuum model is presented, which deals with the discharge of multi-component granular mixtures in core flow mode. The full model description is given (including the constitutive models for the segregation mechanism) and the interactions between particles at the microscopic level are parametrised in order to predict the development of stagnant zone boundaries during core flow discharges. Finally, the model is applied to a real industrial problem and predictions are made for the segregation patterns developed during mixture discharge in core flow mode.

The pseudo-spectral solution method offers a flexible and fast alternative to the more usual finite element and volume methods, particularly when the long-time transient behaviour of a system is of interest. The exact solution is obtained at grid collocation points leading to superior accuracy on modest grids. Furthermore, the grid can be freely adapted in time and space to particular flow conditions or geometric variations, especially useful where strongly coupled, time-dependent, multi-physics solutions are investigated. Examples include metallurgical applications involving the interaction of electromagnetic fields and conducting liquids with a free surface. The electromagnetic field determines the instantaneous liquid volume shape, which then affects the electromagnetic field. A general methodology of the pseudo-spectral approach is presented, with several instructive example applications: the aluminium electrolysis MHD problem, induction melting in a cold crucible and the dynamics of AC/DC magnetically levitated droplets. Finally, comparisons with available analytical solutions and to experimental measurements are discussed.

Full-scale furnished cabin fires have been studied experimentally for the purpose of characterising the post-crash cabin fire environment by the US Federal Aviation Administration for many years. In this paper the Computational Fluid Dynamics fire field model SMARTFIRE is used to simulate one of these fires conducted in the C-133 test facility in order to provide further validation of the computational approach and the SMARTFIRE software. The experiment involves exposing the interior cabin materials to an external fuel fire, opening only one exit at the far end of the cabin (the same side as the rupture) for ventilation, and noting the subsequent spread of the external fire to the cabin interior and the onset of flashover at approximately 210 seconds. Through this analysis, the software is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental data, producing reasonable agreement with the fire dynamics prior to flashover and producing a reasonable prediction of the flashover time i.e. 225 seconds. The paper then proceeds to utilize the model to examine the impact on flashover time of the extent of cabin furnishings and cabin ventilation provided by available exits

Biofluid behaviour in microchannel systems is investigated in this paper through the modelling of a microfluidic biochip developed for the separation of blood plasma. Based on particular assumptions, the effects of some mechanical features of the microchannels on behaviour of the biofluid are explored. These include microchannel, constriction, bending channel, bifurcation as well as channel length ratio between the main and side channels. The key characteristics and effects of the microfluidic dynamics are discussed in terms of separation efficiency of the red blood cells with respect to the rest of the medium. The effects include the Fahraeus and Fahraeus-Lindqvist effects, the Zweifach-Fung bifurcation law, the cell-free layer phenomenon. The characteristics of the microfluid dynamics include the properties of the laminar flow as well as particle lateral or spinning trajectories. In this paper the fluid is modelled as a single-phase flow assuming either Newtonian or Non-Newtonian behaviours to investigate the effect of the viscosity on flow and separation efficiency. It is found that, for a flow rate controlled Newtonian flow system, viscosity and outlet pressure have little effect on velocity distribution. When the fluid is assumed to be Non-Newtonian more fluid is separated than observed in the Newtonian case, leading to reduction of the flow rate ratio between the main and side channels as well as the system pressure as a whole.

This paper deals with heat transfer on a moving plate by mean of an impinging jet. Three different turbulence models are used and it turns out that Lam-Bremhorst model is in good agreement with measurements when Re is lower that 5000. In case of moving strip (ratio m=V strip/V jet lower than 1/3), there is almost no effect of m on Nusselt distribution in the stagnation region.

A large class of computational problems are characterised by frequent synchronisation, and computational requirements which change as a function of time. When such a problem is solved on a message passing multiprocessor machine [5], the combination of these characteristics leads to system performance which deteriorate in time. As the communication performance of parallel hardware steadily improves so load balance becomes a dominant factor in obtaining high parallel efficiency. Performance can be improved with periodic redistribution of computational load; however, redistribution can sometimes be very costly. We study the issue of deciding when to invoke a global load re-balancing mechanism. Such a decision policy must actively weigh the costs of remapping against the performance benefits, and should be general enough to apply automatically to a wide range of computations. This paper discusses a generic strategy for Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB) in unstructured mesh computational mechanics applications. The strategy is intended to handle varying levels of load changes throughout the run. The major issues involved in a generic dynamic load balancing scheme will be investigated together with techniques to automate the implementation of a dynamic load balancing mechanism within the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools (CAPTools) environment, which is a semi-automatic tool for parallelisation of mesh based FORTRAN codes.

The availability of CFD software that can easily be used and produce high efficiency on a wide range of parallel computers is extremely limited. The investment and expertise required to parallelise a code can be enormous. In addition, the cost of supercomputers forces high utilisation to justify their purchase, requiring a wide range of software. To break this impasse, tools are urgently required to assist in the parallelisation process that dramatically reduce the parallelisation time but do not degrade the performance of the resulting parallel software. In this paper we discuss enhancements to the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools (CAPTools) to assist in the parallelisation of complex unstructured mesh-based computational mechanics codes.

The manual effort required to convert sequential computational mechanics programs into a useful, scalable parallel form is considerable. Tools that can assist in the conversion process are clearly required. Computer aided parallelisation tools (CAPTools) have been developed to generate efficient parallel code for real world structured grid application codes such as Computational Fluid Dynamics. Automatable single-program multi-data (SPMD) overlapping domain decomposition (DD) techniques established for structured grid codes have been adapted by the authors to manually parallelise unstructured mesh applications. Inspector loops have been used to provide generic techniques for the run-time support necessary to extend the capabilities of CAPTools to automatic implementation of SPMD DD techniques in the parallelisation of unstructured mesh codes. Aerodynamic generation of sound is governed by the Navier–Stokes equations while acoustic propagation in a non-uniform medium is effectively described by the linearised Euler equations. Different numerical schemes are required for the efficient solution of these two sets of equations, and therefore, coupling techniques become an essential issue. Two types of one-way coupling between the flow solver and the acoustic solver are discussed: (a) for aerodynamic sound generated at solid surfaces, and (b) in the free stream. Test results indicate how the coupling achieves the necessary accuracy so that Computational Fluid Dynamics codes can be used in aeroacoustic simulations.
