'To Tremble the Zero: Art in the Age of Algorithmic Reproduction' is a philosophic, political and sensuous journey playing with (and against) Benjamin's 'Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction'. In an age inundated by the 'post-': postmodernity, posthuman, post art, postsexual, post-feminist, post-society, post-nation, etc, 'To Tremble the Zero' sets out to re/present the nature of what it means to do or make 'art', as well as what it means to be or have 'human/ity' when the ground is nothing other than the fractal, and algorithmically infinite, combinations of zero and one. The work will address also the unfortunate way in which modern forms of metaphysics continue to creep 'unsuspectingly' into our understanding of contemporary media/electronic arts, despite (or perhaps even because of) the attempts by Latour, Badiou, or Agamben especially when addressing the zero/one as if a contradictory 'binary' rather than as a kind of 'slice' or (to use Deleuze and Guattari) an immanent plane of immanence. This work argues that by retrieving Benjamin, Einstein, Gödel, and Haraway, a rather different story of art can be told.

The Art Workers Guild, brother body to the SPAB and once presided over by William Morris and his followers, is 125 years old this year. Alan Powers looks back over its history, and sheds light on the characters and common bonds between the two bodies – while present Brothers of the Guild are pictured at work by photographer Lara Platman for new book to mark the event.

Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a clinical product comprising a mixture of Portland cement and bismuth oxide which is currently used as a root−filling material in dentistry. It has good biological compatibility, is capable of promoting both osteogenesis and cementogensis, and is finding increasing use in endodontic therapy. It is dimensionally stable, and provides an acceptable and durable seal for endodontically treated teeth. This article reviews the chemistry and applications of MTA, and highlights the fact that very little is currently known about the hydration chemistry, phase evolution and stability of this cement in physiological environments. However, biological effects of MTA have been well documented and are considered in detail. The article concludes that this material is a useful addition to the range of materials available for clinical application in endodontics.

This article considers national policy drivers promoting the development of advanced assessment skills and practical procedures for the safe and effective use of the stethoscope in the clinical area. The evidence base underpinning effective use of the stethoscope in clinical practice is explored, including the preparation of the patient and the environment, applying infection control policies, and placing an emphasis on privacy and dignity. This is followed by a practical guide to auscultation technique of the respiratory system for nurses developing advanced practice skills.

This paper reviews the literature on fluoride-releasing composite resins. These materials have been available for several years, with fluoride release being achieved by adding soluble or sparingly soluble fluoride salts to the formulation. However, this has been shown to lead to a gradual reduction in the mechanical properties. These materials are also unable to undergo "fluoride recharge". Experimental fluoride-releasing composites have been prepared which supply fluoride by alternative mechanisms that do have the potential for fluoride recharge but, so far, these materials have not been made available for use in patients. Fluoride-releasing composite resins have been shown to be effective in preventing secondary caries in vitro. They have also been shown to reduce the size and depth of carious lesions. However, information on their clinical effectiveness is limited and the paper concludes that there is an urgent need for research on this topic.

This article reviews the means by which fluoride is supplied to populations. Many public health authorities provide fluoridated drinking water, with typical concentrations of fluoride of between 0.5 and 1.0 ppm. This has been found to be safe and effective, though differences in caries incidence between fluoridated and non-fluoridated regions are less than they were 50 years ago, because of the wider availability of fluoridated products to the whole population. Concerns about the effect of fluoride on bone density and associated conditions are reviewed and the general conclusion from considering the literature on fluoride is that there is almost no cause for concern. Alternatives to water as a means of delivering fluoride to the general public that are being used in a number of countries are salt and milk. These alternatives are also reviewed and have been shown to give satisfactory levels of protection against caries, though milk is shown to be less satisfactory than water as a vehicle for fluoride delivery. Milk is also less effective in providing fluoride to individuals in the population, and is less likely to be consumed by people in lower socio-economic groups, precisely those who suffer most from dental caries. This study concludes that mass water fluoridation remains an important contribution to good oral health throughout the community.
