We apply a coded aperture snapshot spectral imager (CASSI) to fluorescence microscopy. CASSI records a two-dimensional (2D) spectrally filtered projection of a three-dimensional (3D) spectral data cube. We minimize a convex quadratic function with total variation (TV) constraints for data cube estimation from the 2D snapshot. We adapt the TV minimization algorithm for direct fluorescent bead identification from CASSI measurements by combining a priori knowledge of the spectra associated with each bead type. Our proposed method creates a 2D bead identity image. Simulated fluorescence CASSI measurements are used to evaluate the behavior of the algorithm. We also record real CASSI measurements of a ten bead type fluorescence scene and create a 2D bead identity map. A baseline image from filtered-array imaging system verifies CASSI's 2D bead identity map.

The prevailing view is that we cannot witness biological evolution because it occurred on a time scale immensely greater than our lifetime. Here, we show that we can witness evolution in our lifetime by watching the evolution of the flying human-and-machine species: the airplane. We document this evolution, and we also predict it based on a physics principle: the constructal law. We show that the airplanes must obey theoretical allometric rules that unite them with the birds and other animals. For example, the larger airplanes are faster, more efficient as vehicles, and have greater range. The engine mass is proportional to the body size: this scaling is analogous to animal design, where the mass of the motive organs (muscle, heart, lung) is proportional to the body size. Large or small, airplanes exhibit a proportionality between wing span and fuselage length, and between fuel load and body size. The animal-design counterparts of these features are evident. The view that emerges is that the evolution phenomenon is broader than biological evolution. The evolution of technology, river basins, and animal design is one phenomenon, and it belongs in physics. © 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

This thesis examines the discourse(s) of crisis in the Parsi diaspora. Treating crisis as a common variable, rather than a singular and unique event across various Parsi communities, I investigate the dimensions of crisis that bind separated Parsi communities in anxiety through a shared language, cultural experience, and historical memory. Turning first to India and then Hong Kong as my case studies, I analyze “crisis,” that has often been identified in terms of demographic decay or postcolonial decline, in the context of more subtle debates around racial purity and trust funds. Crisis, for the Parsi diaspora, while indicating a critical moment in the present, also serves to reveal the underlying and pre-existing socio-economic and cultural tensions in the communities. Relying largely on life-story interviews, online blogs and articles, and archival work, I portray the crisis not as a unique and sporadic event, but rather as one of continuity and complexity, albeit manifesting each time in different and unique guises, that continues to disrupt as well as unite the Parsi diaspora today.

This thesis introduces two related lines of study on classification of hyperspectral images with nonlinear methods. First, it describes a quantitative and systematic evaluation, by the author, of each major component in a pipeline for classifying hyperspectral images (HSI) developed earlier in a joint collaboration [23]. The pipeline, with novel use of nonlinear classification methods, has reached beyond the state of the art in classification accuracy on commonly used benchmarking HSI data [6], [13]. More importantly, it provides a clutter map, with respect to a predetermined set of classes, toward the real application situations where the image pixels not necessarily fall into a predetermined set of classes to be identified, detected or classified with.

The particular components evaluated are a) band selection with band-wise entropy spread, b) feature transformation with spatial filters and spectral expansion with derivatives c) graph spectral transformation via locally linear embedding for dimension reduction, and d) statistical ensemble for clutter detection. The quantitative evaluation of the pipeline verifies that these components are indispensable to high-accuracy classification.

Secondly, the work extends the HSI classification pipeline with a single HSI data cube to multiple HSI data cubes. Each cube, with feature variation, is to be classified of multiple classes. The main challenge is deriving the cube-wise classification from pixel-wise classification. The thesis presents the initial attempt to circumvent it, and discuss the potential for further improvement.
