Scenic Design of James and the Giant Peach

The purpose of this thesis is to provide research, supporting paperwork, production photographs and other materials that document the scenic design process for James and the Giant Peach at Adventure Theatre MTC. This thesis contains the following: concept statement, scenic research images collected to express location, and the emotional/ intellectual/ psychological landscapes for the production, preliminary sketches, photographs of the ¼” scale model, drafting plates and supporting paint elevations to communicate the design, prop list and accompanying research, archival production photographs to document the completed design, and finally periodical reviews of the show.

MUSICAL IMPROVISATION AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS

Musical improvisation combines technical proficiency and musical intuition. Due to its interactive nature, improvisation provides an avenue of communication among all art forms. This dissertation project explores the collaborative aspects of improvisation involving a musician, visual artist, a small group of dancers, and videographer. Video footage from two separate recording sessions provided hours of visual materials which were studied and edited. The first session was a live performance recorded in front of a studio audience. The second session was a two-day collaboration between musician and dancers in a studio space. The process of editing and compiling images with audio-an important element in this project-presented many unforeseeable challenges and lessons. This recorded dissertation is comprised of seven music videos that demonstrate my ability as an artist in collaboration with visual artist-professor Richard Klank, dancers David Yates, Jamie Garcia, Raha Behnam, Rachel Wolfe and Adrian Galvin, and video artist Nguyen Nguyen. Each video represents an individual creative process involving musical performance, studio lighting, sound recording, and video editing.

A Study of pH Manipulation on Tumor Proliferation and the CTL Response

Adoptive Cell Transfer (ACT) Therapy is a cancer treatment that enhances and utilizes the body’s own immune system. However, this treatment has had limited success in clinical trials. We hypothesized that this is due to the immunosuppressive, acidic microenvironment of cancer tumors. We tested the effects of acidic, neutral, and basic environments in vitro on cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) survival, activation, migration and killing ability and on cancer cell survival. We found that CTLs have most optimum survival, activation, and migration in a neutral environment, while the optimal extracellular conditions for EG-7 lymphoma are slightly acidic and B16-OVA melanoma survives best in physiological conditions. Future research should further study the killing ability of T cells in the three different environments and look to move to in vivo experiments.

Beethoven's Violinists: The Influence of Clement, Viotti, and the French School on Beethoven's Violin Compositions

Over the course of his career, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) admired and befriended many violin virtuosos. In addition to being renowned performers, many of these virtuosos were prolific composers in their own right. Through their own compositions, interpretive style and new technical contributions, they inspired some of Beethoven’s most beloved violin works. This dissertation places a selection of Beethoven’s violin compositions in historical and stylistic context through an examination of related compositions by Giovanni Battista Viotti (1755–1824), Pierre Rode (1774–1830) and Franz Clement (1780–1842). The works of these violin virtuosos have been presented along with those of Beethoven in a three-part recital series designed to reveal the compositional, technical and artistic influences of each virtuoso. Viotti’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major and Rode’s Violin Concerto No. 10 in B minor serve as examples from the French violin concerto genre, and demonstrate compositional and stylistic idioms that affected Beethoven’s own compositions. Through their official dedications, Beethoven’s last two violin sonatas, the Op. 47, or Kreutzer, in A major, dedicated to Rodolphe Kreutzer, and Op. 96 in G major, dedicated to Pierre Rode, show the composer’s reverence for these great artistic personalities. Beethoven originally dedicated his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, to Franz Clement. This work displays striking similarities to Clement’s own Violin Concerto in D major, which suggests that the two men had a close working relationship and great respect for one another. The first recital was performed in Ulrich Recital Hall; the second and third recitals were performed in Gildenhorn Recital Hall at the University of Maryland. All three performances were collaborations with pianist, Hsiang-Ling Hsiao. A Recording of the first program can be found in the Digital Repository at the University of Maryland (DRUM). LOOKING FOR DIONYSUS: HEDWIG RAABE AND THE HAUNTING OF THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY

This thesis explores the relationship of the actress Hedwig Raabe’s 1866 performance in Charlotte Birch-Pfeiffer’s play Die Grille to the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche’s 1872 book The Birth of Tragedy. This exploration is structured by theatre scholar Marvin Carlson’s concept of haunting. I conclude that the haunting of Nietzsche’s text by Raabe’s performance destabilizes the former and points towards new ways of understanding The Birth of Tragedy in the fields of theatre and performance studies.
