Barbara Hanning points out in her book Concise History of Western Music, that "Twentieth-century American music was in large measure an extension of European music" (Hanning 1998, 515). My dissertation/perforrnance project features cello works written by three contemporary composers who lived in America but were connected to the European heritage in different ways; each contributed significantly to the development of American classical concert life, music education, and even popular culture. Programs of my performances are intended to illustrate their unique compositional styles. The first recital consists of five cello compositions of Massachusetts-born Arthur Foote (1853 - 1937): Drei Stucke fur Pianoforte und Violoncello, Op. 1; Scherzo, Op.22; Romanza, Op.33; Aubade, Op.77; and Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, Op.78. Foote was influenced by the German-trained John Knowles Paine at Harvard University; he composed music famous for its extensive chromaticism in both harmony and melodic line, and for clearly-defined formal structure. The second recital explores the music of Swiss-American composer Ernest Bloch (1880-1959): a short Meditation Hebraique, a Suite No. I for Violoncello Solo and the famous rhapsody Schelomo. Born in Geneva, Switzerland, and settling in the United States in 1916, Bloch is a composer deeply influenced by the European late-Romantic tradition and is also well-known for employing "Hebraic" elements into his works. The final performance comprises two other of Bloch's cello works and one cello concerto by the Austrian-American composer, Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897- 1957). Bloch's Voice in the Wilderness is a symphonic poem for orchestra and cello (accompanied by piano in this performance), consisting of six movements performed without pause. His Suite No.3 for Cello Solo is shorter and has a simpler style than the first Suite. Korngold was recognized as a child prodigy in his native Austria. After a Nazi-induced exile, he immigrated to America and became a film music composer in Hollywood. The Cello Concerto was used in the movie "Deception" (1 946), for which Korngold provided the film score. The impassioned harmonic language and lavish melodic lines inherited from the high-romanticism make this work one of comparative discordant beauty among other compositions of his time.

This dissertation is a cultural biography of Mestre Cobra Mansa, a mestre of the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira angola. The intention of this work is to track Mestre Cobrinha's life history and accomplishments from his beginning as an impoverished child in Rio to becoming a mestre of the tradition-its movements, music, history, ritual and philosophy. A highly skilled performer and researcher, he has become a cultural ambassador of the tradition in Brazil and abroad. Following the Trail of the Snake is an interdisciplinary work that integrates the research methods of ethnomusicology (oral history, interview, participant observation, musical and performance analysis and transcription) with a revised life history methodology to uncover the multiple cultures that inform the life of a mestre of capoeira. A reflexive auto-ethnography of the author opens a dialog between the experiences and developmental steps of both research partners' lives. Written in the intersection of ethnomusicology, studies of capoeira, social studies and music education, the academic dissertation format is performed as a roda of capoeira aiming to be respectful of the original context of performance. The result is a provocative ethnographic narrative that includes visual texts from the performative aspects of the tradition (music and movement), aural transcriptions of Mestre Cobra Mansa's storytelling and a myriad of writing techniques to accompany the reader in a multi-dimensional journey of multicultural understanding. The study follows Cinezio Feliciano Pe anha in his childhood struggle for survival as a street performer in Rio de Janeiro. Several key moves provided him with the opportunity to rebuild his life and to grow into a recognized mestre of the capoeira angola martial art as Mestre Cobra Mansa ("Tame Snake" in Portuguese). His dedicated work enabled him to contribute to the revival of the capoeira angola tradition during the 1980's in Bahia. After his move to the United States in the early 1990's, Mestre Cobrinha founded the International Capoeira Angola Foundation, which today has expanded to 28 groups around the world. Mestre Cobra returned home to Brazil to initiate projects that seek to develop a new sense of community from all that he has learned and been able to accomplish in his life through the performance and study of capoeira angola.

This dissertation looks at the connection between Heliodorus's fifth-century prose romance, An Aethiopian History, certain Renaissance texts, and how these texts helped influence an alternate representation of Africans in the early modern world. Through their portrayals of Africans, early modern English playwrights frequently give the impression that Africans, especially black Africans, were people without accomplishments, without culture. Previously, however, this was not the case. Africans were depicted with dignity, as a tradition existed for this kind of representation--and Renaissance Europe had long been acquainted with the achievements of Africans, dating back to antiquity. As the source of several lost plays, the Aethiopica is instrumental in dramatizing Africans favorably, especially on the early modern stage, and helped shape a stage tradition that runs alongside the stereotyping of Africans. This Heliodoran tradition can be seen in works of Greene, Heywood, Jonson, Shakespeare, and others in the motifs of crosscultural and transracial romance, male and female chastity, racial metamorphosis, lost or abandoned babies, wandering heroes, and bold heroines. In Jonson's Masque of Blackness and Masque of Beauty, I establish a connection between these two masques and Heliodorus's Aethiopica and argue for a Heliodoran stage tradition implicit in both masques through the conceit of blanching. In The English Moore, I explore how Richard Brome uses the Heliodoran and Jonsonian materials to create a negative quality of blackness that participates in the dramatic tradition of the degenerate African on the English Renaissance stage. With Othello, I contend that it is a drama that can be seen in the Heliodoran tradition by stressing certain motifs found in the play that derives from the Aethiopica. Reading Othello this way provides us with a more layered and historicized interpretation of Shakespeare's protagonists. Othello's nationality and faith make his exalted position in Venice and the Venetian army credible and logical. His nobility and heroic status become more sharply defined, giving us a fuller understanding of the emphasis he places on chastity--both for himself and for Desdemona. Instead of a traditional, compliant, and submissive Desdemona, a courageous, resourceful, witty, and pure heroine emerges--one who lives by the dictates of her conscience than by the constraints of societal norms. Recovering the tradition of positive portrayal of Africans that originated from the Aethiopica necessitated an examination of eleven plays that I contend helped to frame the dramatic tradition under investigation. Six of these plays are continental dramas, and five are English. Although three of the English plays are lost and the other two are seventeenth-century dramas, their titles and names of their protagonists, like those of the six extant continental plays, share the names of Heliodorus's hero and heroine, making an exploration of the continental plays imperative to facilitate their use as paradigms in reconstructing the three lost English plays. These continental dramas show that plays whose titles derive from the Aethiopica itself or reflect the names of its major characters follow Heliodorus's text closely, enabling an investigation of the Heliodoran tradition on the early modern English stage. Recovering the Heliodoran tradition adds to the exploration of racial politics and the understanding of the dramatic tradition that constrained and enabled Renaissance playwrights' representation of race and gender.

Terrestrial planets produce crusts as they differentiate. The Earth’s bi-modal crust, with a high-standing granitic continental crust and a low-standing basaltic oceanic crust, is unique in our solar system and links the evolution of the interior and exterior of this planet. Here I present geochemical observations to constrain processes accompanying crustal formation and evolution. My approach includes geochemical analyses, quantitative modeling, and experimental studies. The Archean crustal evolution project represents my perspective on when Earth’s continental crust began forming. In this project, I utilized critical element ratios in sedimentary records to track the evolution of the MgO content in the upper continental crust as a function time. The early Archean subaerial crust had >11 wt. % MgO, whereas by the end of Archean its composition had evolved to about 4 wt. % MgO, suggesting a transition of the upper crust from a basalt-like to a more granite-like bulk composition. Driving this fundamental change of the upper crustal composition is the widespread operation of subduction processes, suggesting the onset of global plate tectonics at ~ 3 Ga (Abstract figure). Three of the chapters in this dissertation leverage the use of Eu anomalies to track the recycling of crustal materials back into the mantle, where Eu anomaly is a sensitive measure of the element’s behavior relative to neighboring lanthanoids (Sm and Gd) during crustal differentiation. My compilation of Sm-Eu-Gd data for the continental crust shows that the average crust has a net negative Eu anomaly. This result requires recycling of Eu-enriched lower continental crust to the mantle. Mass balance calculations require that about three times the mass of the modern continental crust was returned into the mantle over Earth history, possibly via density-driven recycling. High precision measurements of Eu/Eu* in selected primitive glasses of mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) from global MORs, combined with numerical modeling, suggests that the recycled lower crustal materials are not found within the MORB source and may have at least partially sank into the lower mantle where they can be sampled by hot spot volcanoes. The Lesser Antilles Li isotope project provides insights into the Li systematics of this young island arc, a representative section of proto-continental crust. Martinique Island lavas, to my knowledge, represent the only clear case in which crustal Li is recycled back into their mantle source, as documented by the isotopically light Li isotopes in Lesser Antilles sediments that feed into the fore arc subduction trench. By corollary, the mantle-like Li signal in global arc lavas is likely the result of broadly similar Li isotopic compositions between the upper mantle and bulk subducting sediments in most arcs. My PhD project on Li diffusion mechanism in zircon is being carried out in extensive collaboration with multiple institutes and employs analytical, experimental and modeling studies. This ongoing project, finds that REE and Y play an important role in controlling Li diffusion in natural zircons, with Li partially coupling to REE and Y to maintain charge balance. Access to state-of-art instrumentation presented critical opportunities to identify the mechanisms that cause elemental fractionation during laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis. My work here elucidates the elemental fractionation associated with plasma plume condensation during laser ablation and particle-ion conversion in the ICP.

Miller Range (MIL) Martian meteorites are oxidized nakhlites. Early studies attribute their oxidation to reduction-oxidation reactions involving assimilated sulfate. I utilize the sulfur isotope and major element composition of the MIL pairs to assess their oxidative history. MIL sulfides display an average sulfur isotope composition that is different from Nakhla sulfate and sulfide. The sulfur isotope differences produce a mixing array between juvenile sulfur and mass-independent sulfur signatures, indicating assimilation of anomalous sulfur into the melt. I estimate an fO2 of QFM (+3.5 ± 0.4) and a sulfur content of 360 ppm ± 12 – 1300 ppm ± 50. With these results, I test the hypothesis of sulfate assimilation through models of charge balance, isotope mixing, and degassing of sulfur bearing compounds. I conclude that sulfate assimilation was significant in the oxidation of the MIL pairs but, additional oxidants were assimilated.

Increasing research suggests that elevations in the cortisol awakening response (CAR), the natural increase of cortisol 30 to 40 minutes after waking, may serve as a vulnerability marker for depression. However, existing studies have focused on adolescence and adulthood; very little is known about the CAR in early childhood and the factors that are associated with it. The current study aimed to examine the validity of the CAR as a potential early-emerging vulnerability marker for depression in a sample of preschool-age children. We examined associations between the CAR and two well-established risk factors for depression: maternal psychopathology and early child temperament (high negative emotionality (NE) and/or low positive emotionality (PE)). The sample consisted of 146 preschool-age children, of whom 71 (49.3%) had a biological mother with a history of depression and 65 (45.5%) had a biological mother with a history of anxiety. To assess the CAR, salivary cortisol samples were collected from the child upon waking, 30 and 45 minutes post-waking on two weekdays. Children’s CAR was examined as the total volume of cortisol secreted (AUCg) and the total increase in cortisol (AUCi) across waking. Evening cortisol was collected 30 minutes before bedtime. Child temperament was assessed using observational laboratory measures. Maternal depression and anxiety were assessed with clinical interviews. Associations with children’s CAR, as indicated by AUCg or AUCi, appeared to be specific to maternal current psychopathology and symptoms of anhedonia. Additionally, we observed significant interactions for both maternal lifetime and current depression and anxiety, in combination with child NE and PE, on elevated evening cortisol levels and flattened diurnal cortisol rhythms, indicating altered patterns of basal cortisol activity in offspring. Our study contributes to the limited but growing knowledge on the development of the CAR in preschool age children and as a marker of early risk. Findings suggest that there is a complex interplay between familial risk, affective vulnerability, and their joint effects on neuroendocrine dysfunction in young children, and highlight the need for future research to examine which aspects of the early diurnal rhythm predict the emergence of later depressive illness.
