Academics across the country are having an allergic reaction to the corporate model of operation being adopted by many universities. Terms like branding, collateral materials, budget controls, marketing strategies, and outcomes are causing a panic among faculty who believe that a customer satisfaction approach to higher education is anti-intellectual and that it leads to grade inflation, teaching toward evaluations, and learning as product, not process. Honors programs in particular, often the standard bearers of undergraduate academic standards, are being asked to market themselves not only to the top prospective students, but also to the university administration at large. Honors is frequently the default focus group expected to show the rest of the university programs and departments ‘How it is done,’ or rather, ‘How it is done according to standard.’ By ‘it,’ of course, I mean marketing our curriculum, selling our program, and branding our product.

Introduction for Todd Gleeson at the ADVANCE Seminar

Dean Gleeson earned a doctorate from the University of California, Irvine in developmental and cell biology in 1979, and has been a member of the Boulder faculty since 1981. He is a professor in the Department of Integrative Physiology, and maintains a research laboratory that has trained numerous undergraduates and 20 graduate students and postdoctoral associates. He earned Boulder campus Student Office of Alumni Relations (SOAR) teaching-honors in 1985. He has published over 100 articles and abstracts on his studies of muscle carbohydrate metabolism and the metabolic consequences of muscle fatigue in animals, and he is an elected fellow of the AAAS. He served as Associate Vice Chancellor for Faculty Affairs on the Boulder campus from 1997-2001, and has served as dean of the College since 2001.

It is my pleasure to be with you tonight celebrating the accomplishments of these wonderful and worthy new additions to the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement. I'm delighted to have this opportunity to help recognize these individuals so deserving of their honors. What a pleasure to say, “well done and thank you” to people who make such significant contributions to the world, who live their lives meaningfully in the way they choose to put their talents and energies to work.
