Final Testimony on LR 141: Status of Nebraska Forest Service

Good morning, Chairman Wehrbein and members of the Appropriations Committee. I am John Owens, and I serve as Vice - President and Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to speak with you regarding Legislative Resolution 141 on the Nebraska Forest Service.

EC03-1759 Nebraska Register of Champion Trees 2003

This register lists the largest trees of over 80 species identified in Nebraska. The name of the owner and nominator, size and location of each tree follow each listing. Many people across Nebraska have worked hard to make this register as comprehensive and accurate as possible, but the quest to find the largest trees in Nebraska is never over. Champion trees are by nature old, and old trees diminish and die. Larger trees are newly discovered. Thus, this list continually changes as new nominations are submitted.

Tribute to Curt Bromm

Since growing up on the family farm, Curt Bromm has continued to maintain a strong interest in agriculture and education as he developed his legal practice in Wahoo and embarked on a career in public service as a State Senator. Curt Bromm was born at Oakland and graduated from Tekamah High School. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he received his baccalaureate degree in agriculture and then a law degree. Curt served as a second lieutenant in the U. S. Army.

Presentation for Neal E. Harlan

Our first Public Service To Agriculture Award this evening will be presented posthumously to Neal E. Harlan who gained recognition throughout Nebraska and the Midwest in grain merchandising combined with a lifelong interest in the progress of agriculture through education and research.

APC Hearing

Fellow members of the Academic Planning Committee and others here today, I am appearing before you to speak about three proposed cuts to the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources budget. These cuts are: $213,959 in state funding for the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum; $837,333 in state funding for the Nebraska Forest Service; and $1,799,915 in state funding for the Veterinary Student Contract program.
