Oral Presentation: Exploring Oral Presentations of Homework Problems as a Means of Assessing Homework

In this action research study of my freshmen Algebra I class, I investigated a method of assessing homework based on completion and presentations. When I changed the method of grading from checking answers to looking for completion and presentation of selected problems, I found that the majority of the students enjoyed the method because it allowed them to explore other methods of solving and helped them gain an understanding of the problems. This resulted in less stress on obtaining “the” answer. I also realized that I viewed homework differently and had a better understanding of the students’ thought processes, which caused me to check tests differently. These results led to a better relationship between the students and myself. As a result of this research, I plan to change my methods of assessing homework from the traditional right or wrong to a rubric assessment based on presentations and completion of the assignment.

Phi Beta Delta Presentation - Lawrence Bruner

A year ago I had the privilege of being inducted into Phi Beta Delta, and at that time I was invited to speak at the next induction ceremony, which it is my pleasure to do today. I am delighted to have this opportunity to congratulate our scholarship recipient, our new inductees, Peter Gleick, President of the Pacific Institute for Studies in Development, Environment and Security, and Merlyn Carlson, Director of the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and a member of the Governor's cabinet, on their honorary memberships in the society. I want to acknowledge Harriet Turner, Director of International affairs, for her fine work on behalf of the university and us all, and I want to thank all members of this society of international scholars for the important work you do, not only for Nebraska but, indeed, for our world.

Omaha Agri-Business Club Leadership Award Presentation

It is a real pleasure to present the 2006 Omaha Agri- Business Club Leadership Award this evening during National Agriculture Week. I commend the Omaha Agri-Business Club for establishing this fine award. We always need to celebrate the accomplishments of individuals whose leadership efforts contribute to our agricultural industry which is the backbone of Nebraska and our nation.

Thank you for inviting us to share with you some information about the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and what we are doing for Nebraska. As a stakeholder in Nebraska's land-grant university, you and every other Nebraskan have every right at any time to ask us what we've done for you and your neighbors lately. We welcome the question. There is so much excellent work being accomplished on this campus and throughout Nebraska that I am delighted each time I have the opportunity to talk about it. The biggest problem I find is stopping - there's always so much more to say - than there is time to say it in!

Our first Public Service To Agriculture Award this evening will be presented posthumously to Neal E. Harlan who gained recognition throughout Nebraska and the Midwest in grain merchandising combined with a lifelong interest in the progress of agriculture through education and research.

You are embarking upon a truly exciting, rewarding opportunity, important to both you and Nebraska. Our state needs good leaders, people dedicated to keeping our organizations, communities, and Nebraska strong, and moving forward. We need leaders of courage and compassion, able to think clearly, assess information, formulate a plan, and adjust that plan as needed. We need leaders who work toward a common good.

Alumni Advisory Council Presentation - Wick Alumni Center

Folks, I'm so pleased to be here with you today to talk about the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and the exciting, valuable contributions our faculty, staff, and students are making to Nebraska and, indeed, the world. Last year an independent study found the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources provides a conservative 15-to-1 return on state tax dollars invested with us. We call that study the At Work for Nebraska study because well, that's what we are about.

ENHANCEMENT OF THE FAA’s ON-LINE WILDLIFE AIRCRAFT STRIKE DATABASE WITH AN INTERACTIVE GRAPHICS CAPABILITY

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Prescott, AZ, USA) was awarded a grant from the William J. Hughes FAA Technical Center in October 1999 to develop and maintain a web site dealing with a wide variety of airport safety wildlife concerns. Initially, the web site enabled users to access related topics such as wildlife management (at/near airports), bird identification information, FAA wildlife management guidelines, education, pictures, current news, upcoming meetings and training, available jobs and discussion/forum sections. In April 2001, the web site was augmented with an on-line wildlife strike report (FAA Form 5200-7). Upon submittal on-line, “quick look” email notifications are sent to concerned government personnel. The distribution of these emails varies as to whether there was damage, human injuries/fatalities, and whether feather remains were collected and will be sent to the Smithsonian Institution for identification. In July 2002, a real-time on-line query system was incorporated to allow federal and local government agencies, airport and operator personnel, and USDA and airport wildlife biologists to access this database (which as of June 2005 contains 68,288 researched strike reports added to at a rate of approximately 500 strike reports/month) to formulate strategies to reduce the hazards wildlife present to aviation. To date (June 2005), over 15,000 on-line real-time queries were processed. In June 2004, ERAU was authorized to develop a graphical interface to this on-line query system. Current capabilities include mapping strikes (by species) on the US map, each of the contiguous 48 state maps (with AK and HI being added), and airport diagrams of the major metropolitan airports as well as the next 46 airports with the most reported strikes The latter capability depicts strikes by runway in plan as well as in elevation view. Currently under development is the ability to view time-sequenced strikes on the US map. This extensive graphical interface will give analysts the ability to view strike patterns with a wide variety of variables including species, seasons, migration patterns, etc. on US and state maps and airport diagrams.

Music at the Fair! The Trans- Mississippi and International Exposition. An Interactive Website

“Music at the Fair!” gives the daily musical programs for The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition, held in Omaha, Nebraska, June 1 through October 31, 1898. The Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition brought an unprecedented array of local, national, and international musical acts to Omaha, NE in 1898. This served to designate Omaha, "the gateway to the west" as a musical hub, as well as to incite musical excitement in the region. Some of the more popular acts featured were the Theodore Thomas Orchestra, the U.S. Marine Band, and the Apollo Club of Chicago. Many more groups and their musical programs can be found within the pages of this site. The “Music at the Fair!” website was created by Grace Carey, and last revised on May 19, 2006.It is the result of a two- year research grant funded by an Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE) grant through the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. It is an extension of an ongoing project on music at the TME by Music Professor Peter Lefferts. The primary sources of information for the site are the following newspapers from June – November 1898: The Omaha Daily Bee, the Omaha Evening Bee, and the Omaha World Herald, and the the official programs of the fair located in the archives at the Omaha Public Library. I would like to thank the helpful staff at the Nebraska State Historical Society and the downtown branch of the Omaha Public Library.
