French abstract: La faune des Trématodes Microphallidés d'Alaska étudiée comporte neuf espèces différentes, distribuées en quatre genres: 1° Microphallus oblonga Ching, 1965, M. pygmaeum (Levinsen, 1881) et M. similis (Jaegerskioeld, 1900). 2° Levinseniella (Lev.) propinqua Jaegerskioeld, 1907. 3° Maritrema acadiae (Swales, 1933). M. afanassjewi Belopolskaia, 1952. M. gratiosum Nicoll, 1907. M. megametrios Deblock et Rausch, 1968 et enfin, 4° Pseudospelotrema sp. n° 1. Les caractéristiques morphologiques essentielles de ces Trématodes sont décrites, sauf celles de la dernière espèce citée qui a déjà fait l'objet d'une étude antérieure. English abstract: Microphallid trematodes of nine species, representing four genera, have been studied from birds and mammals collected in Alaska: 1° Microphallus oblonga Ching, 1965, M. pygmaeum (Levinsen, 1881) and M. similis (Jaegerskioeld, 1900). 2° Levinseniella (Lev.) propinqua Jaegerskioeld, 1907. 3° Maritrema acadiae (Swales, 1933), M. afanassjewi Belopolskaia, 1952, M. gratiosum, Nicoll, 1907 and M. megametrios Deblock and Rausch, 1968 and 4° Pseudospelotrema sp. n° 1. Morphological characteristics of these trematodes are described, with the exception of Pseudospelotrema sp. to be considered elsewhere.

Raphidascaris camura sp. n. infected the stomach and intestine of Pomatomus saltatrix (type host), from the northern Gulf of Mexico. It is characterized by having the following combination of features: 31 to 40 pairs of preanal papillae, 10 pairs of postanal papillae with the third papilla from the posterior extremity doubled, nearly equal spicules 1.8 to 2.7% of the body length, and lateral alae abruptly curved near their anterior extremity. Additional species of Raphidascaris were examined and are discussed. Hysterothylacium eurycheilum (Olsen, 1952) comb. n. (=Heterotyphlum e.) from Epinephelus itajara in Florida and the Lesser Antilles, previously known from female worms only, is redescribed as is the anterior end of Heterotyphlum himantolophi Spaul, 1927.

It is the purpose of this paper to review the status of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus spp.) in the boreal regions of the world. Its importance has long been recognized in Eurasian countries, but only during recent years have investigators added anything significant to the knowledge of hydatid disease in North America. There is need to disseminate up-to-date information among medical workers in Canada and Alaska, where the disease is endemic in northern regions having a large aboriginal population. Therefore, particular emphasis will be placed on the situation in boreal North America.

The taxonomic status of anoplocephaline cestodes of microtine rodents has been reviewed. Of the genus Andrya Railliet, 1883, five species are considered valid: A. macrocephala Douthitt, 1915; A. primordialis Douthitt, 1915; A. montana Kirshenblat, 1941 ; A. arctica Rausch, 1952; A. bairdi Schad, 1954. Of the genus Paranoplocephala Luehe, 1910, six species are regarded as valid: P. omphalodes (Hermann, 1783); P. blanchardi (Moniez, 1891); P. infrequens (Douthitt, 1915); P. variabilis (Douthitt, 1915); P. lemmi Rausch, 1952; P. neofibrinus Rausch, 1952. Andrya caucasica Kirshenblat, 1938, and A. bialowizensis Soltys, 1949, are regarded as synonyms of A. macrocephala. Paranoplocephala brevis Kirshenblat, 1938, is regarded as a synonym of P. infrequens. Three species, A. macrocephala, P. omphalodes, and P. infrequens, are holarctic in distribution, occurring mainly in species of Microtus. The uniformity of microtine rodents as hosts for various helminths has been discussed. It is concluded that Dicrostonyx is the most isolated genus from this standpoint, having two nematodes which have not been recorded from members of other genera, and harboring few helminths in common with others. This agrees with Hinton's conclusions, based on morphological characters of Dicrostonyx. From the present concept of Pleistocene glaciations, it is concluded that P. omphalodes and P. infrequens reached the St. Matthew Islands, in Bering Sea, as parasites of a vole from which Microtus abbreviatus has evolved. It appears that this vole arrived on these islands before North America was invaded, in the late Pleistocene, by the palearctic M. oeconomus and Clethrionomys rutilus,/i>. The present known distribution of P. omphalodes in North America corresponds about to that of M. oeconomus on the continent.

Paranoplocephala etholeni n. sp, parasitizing the meadow vole Microtus pennsylvanicus in Alaska and Wisconsin, USA. is described Paranaplocephala etholeni is morphologically most closely related to the Nearctic Paranoplocephala ondatrae (Rausch, 1948). Available data suggest that P. etholeni is a host-specific, locally rare species that may have a wide but sporadic geographical distribution in North America. The finding of P. ondatrae-like cestodes in Microtus spp. suggests that this poorly known species may actually be a parasite of voles rather than muskrat (type host). A tabular synopsis of all the known species of Paranoplocephala s. I. in the Holarctic region with their main morphological features is presented.
